Millfield provides a broad and balanced education which not only prepares pupils for public examinations but also gives them the confidence to achieve success throughout their adult lives. The school offers an exceptionally wide range of courses whilst still allowing pupils' programmes to be tailored to individual needs. Recent examples of this include the launch of Nine at Millfield, a dynamic Year 9 programme, and the use of pupil ipads to promote digital learning
MATHEMATICS AT MILLFIELD THE DEPARTMENT The Mathematics Department consists of 24 members of staff. It is a cheerful, dynamic and inspiring department with a great sense of professionalism and team spirit. The department is structured with a Head of Department above a management team of five tutors, each responsible for a particular year group. These year managers act as deputies for the Head of Department, help with the day to day running of the department and are involved in discussions about strategic planning for the department. In addition, every teacher contributes to the development of the department in some way (e.g. collating shared resources or taking responsibility for specific learning difficulties). Irrespective of ability level, pupils at Millfield are enthusiastic and positive about mathematics. The ethos of the department is to develop a good understanding of the mathematical concepts introduced and encourage an inquisitive approach. Teachers work together to develop resources, discuss teaching strategies and review lessons. The department is supportive of teachers who wish to develop their teaching styles, experiment with new techniques or conduct educational research. We are fortunate to be extremely well equipped and resourced. Each full time tutor has their own classroom with a PC, data projector and Smart board. In addition to this, all pupils and teachers have ipads and access to a set of commonly used apps. Set sizes typically range from 8 and 14, with smaller groups where appropriate. The workshop area is widely used by many of our pupils workshops run at lunch times and during sixth form private study periods and they offer extra help to pupils with their Mathematics. We also offer an extensive gifted and talented programme for our very brightest pupils and a range of study support programmes for our lower achievers. The department has a part time secretary (10 hours per week) to assist with administrative tasks.
CURRICULUM AND RESULTS A level Courses We offer Mathematics and Further Mathematics at both AS and A level. We also prepare pupils for Oxbridge interviews, AEA and STEP Papers. Mathematics is a very popular 6 th form choice, attracting over 100 pupils in the lower sixth. Additional Mathematics The top three or four sets in each year group are fast tracked through the IGCSE course giving them the opportunity to work towards the OCR freestanding Additional Mathematics qualification alongside IGCSE Maths in Year 11. IGCSE All pupils follow the Edexcel International GCSE specification at either higher or foundation level. Extra Curricular Mathematics Extra curricular Mathematics is a very important part of what we do. As well as catering for the needs of our brightest pupils, we try to encourage as many pupils (and staff) as possible, regardless of ability, through these events and activities. We are keen participants in the Team Maths Challenges and have won regional finals of both the sixth form and year 8/9 competitions in recent years. We also enter many pupils for the UKMT Maths Challenges where we gain a considerable number of top awards and each year have a good number of pupils working towards the British Mathematical Olympiad papers. Each half term the department hosts Pi Shop, a club aimed at Sixth Form pupils which provides the opportunity for them to deliver a presentation to peers and staff on an area of extra curricular mathematics that interests them. Other extra curricular activities include the annual House Maths competition and regular evening lectures from visiting speakers. External Exam Results Millfield welcomes young people with a broad range of abilities and talents; the range of ability levels in each cohort is large. Typically there are 22 sets in year 10 with three or four of these sets working towards Additional Maths in addition to their IGCSE and four (small sets) targeting a C grade at IGCSE, with a full range between. Each year about 40% of year 11 pupils achieve an A or A* and all but a handful achieve a C or above. The wide range of ability continues into the sixth form and we typically have a group of pupils who are strong enough to read mathematics at a top university and a few at the other end of the spectrum who will be happy with any pass grade. About 20% of our upper sixth achieve an A* and the A* B rate is around 65%. THE ROLE Millfield wishes to appoint a Teacher of Mathematics to cover maternity from January 2018 until June 2018 to join this thriving, forward looking and well resourced department. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for mathematics and a desire to inspire this in others. They will also be eager to develop their own teaching skills and share ideas with colleagues. We welcome applications from experienced teachers or NQTs from a wide range of backgrounds. We are also happy to consider applications from those without professional qualifications in teaching, if they are well qualified in mathematics and have some relevant experience. Successful candidates in this category would typically be supported by the school to gain QTS in their first year.
