Every hour makes an impact Volunteers make such a difference to our school district. Ask any teacher or principal or the children in a school and you will hear the same answer - WE LOVE VOLUNTEERS! But there is a special volunteer who looks after thousands of our children every year and does it with a smile and a willing heart. Last Saturday night she was inducted into the HEB Hall of Fame as an outstanding volunteer. Congratulations to our very own Melody Davenport, our Fourth Vice President for the Clothes Closet, on this wonderful honor. Melody consistently volunteers more than 1,000 hours a year with the Clothes Closet, on district committees and with local schools. I do not put in a 1,000 hours a year and you may be thinking that it is difficult to find time for even 10 hours a year. And we are still going strong! For clothing, several schools have held or will be holding clothing drives for us and we appreciated your support. We are looking forward to receiving those items. We also have an Eagle Scout doing a drive for us for his Eagle project which should be completed by Nov. 21 with the donations coming to us that Saturday. For school supplies, Teen Court bringing us items every 2-3 weeks. Cash donations from Stonegate Elementary PTA and from the Euless Junior High Cheerleaders - $265 total. School district news DATE grant recipients In 2008, the state legislature approved the District Awards for Teaching Excellence, or DATE, grant program. It provided funds to be distributed in 2009 to recognize and award educational practices that contribute to student success. The Hurst- Euless-Bedford ISD was awarded $1.3 million in DATE grant funds. The District created a plan for how schools could qualify and receive the grant money, based on campus performance objectives. Collection of books is expected to begin the week of Feb. 22. No comic books, magazines, encyclopedias or inappropriate material should be accepted. Only one Book Swap coupon should be given in exchange for one book. Do not give double coupons or award coupons as a prize or incentive. Consistency of coupon distribution is expected. The Council will also be holding a condensed version of a Vendor Fair during the Book Swap. Vendors we are targeting as potential supporters include art schools, amusement and party vendors, gyms, child care, clothing stores, dance studios, doctors, portrait studios and various other kid-friendly businesses. Christmas Providers The Christmas Providers phone lines open Thurs., Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed to take incoming calls from families in need during two shifts each day, Monday through Friday. Christmas Providers is a group that organizes Christmas for needy families in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD and the Birdville ISD. School nurses recommend families and give them the number to call if they would like to be a recipient of Christmas Providers. The parent then calls the hot line number and volunteers take information on the family and their needs. Christmas Providers collects canned goods in the schools leading up to the December end date, then sorts and boxes the items. Each family gets a box of canned goods, usually a grocery gift certificate and gifts purchased by their provider family or group. The requirement to adopt a family is to provide one gift per child and the meat for the family s holiday dinner. Health for Every Body Healthy fundraiser Shady Oaks Elementary PTA held a Walk-A-Thon fundraiser Fri., Nov. 6. Each grade walked 30 minutes during their PE/ Fine Arts period. Parents and volunteers cheered them on. Thanks to Mid-Cities Dental and Delgado Orthodontics for the water bottles and travel toothbrushes that each student received. Pledges are due Nov. 11 with a goal of $11,000. Prizes will be awarded for as little as $10 received in donations and the top donation winner receives a Nintendo Wii. At the end of the walk-a-thon, each student also took home a Certificate of Appreciation. The PTA expects to make this an annual event and received $2,000 the day of the event that included donations from several local businesses. Northwest ISD Council held a 110-booth Vendor Fair in conjunction with the PTA True Colors program attended by approximately 1,900 people. Keller ISD Council is having great success with their Brown-Bag Lunches with the Superintendent events. The event is recorded and available for viewing if you missed the lunch. Region V Vice President Renee Walker reported that Texas PTA membership is up 15 percent from last year at this time. A door prize drawing will be held for those bringing in toothbrushes, toothpaste, unisex deodorants and other personal hygiene products. Donations of boxed cereal and boxed desserts are also needed.
