Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~Melody Beattie Given that November contains the Thanksgiving Holiday I thought I would share this quote from Melody Beattie about gratitude. As I reflect on the first couple months in my job at Stevenson there is a lot for which I am grateful. I hope that everyone involved with Stevenson High School can find that gratitude that unlocks the fullness of their life as well! Besides my family and friends, I am grateful for all of the Stevenson students. They have adapted to the new administrative team very well. With over 2000 students, we have had relatively few disciplinary issues. A vast majority are giving their all towards their studies. Hopefully this showed when you received the progress reports in October and if it didn t, I hope that it shows in their November report cards (report cards will be available at conferences). Many want to be a part of improving Stevenson. We had many applications for our Student Advisory Board and four students from each grade were selected. Even the voices of students not on the advisory board have been heard. Sixty essays from 11 th grade A.P. English were submitted on the pros and cons of ipods in school (surprisingly the essays were split down the middle). A group of Lady Titans proposed and organized our first powder puff football game held in October. Also, four students proposed adding a Junior State of America chapter at Stevenson. It will be the first chapter in the State of Michigan. The purpose is to increase political awareness among high school students. I am very excited about the new opportunities for students to be involved. When our students do get involved, they truly give it their all. Our Marching Band received the highest marks at festival. The first addition of the student newspaper, the Vanguard, was outstanding. Our football team is in the playoffs. Three of our female athletes have performed well at the state level (see the golf and swim articles later in the newsletter). In November, we will see great performances from our Drama students. As the year progresses, I hope that even more students get involved in after school activities and that we will continue to have great success. January 4 - Classes Resume Pfannes continues
Mr. Pfannes continued In addition to the students, I am grateful for the outstanding and caring staff at Stevenson High School. They have already spent countless hours working on ways to improve the education of students. The focus of this work has been on improving reading, writing, and math skills. You will find these skills are used in some capacity across the curriculum and in every job field. One way that teachers have been committed to helping students improve is through the Titan Time Tutoring held for one hour after school every Tuesday and Thursday. Many of our staff members work with your students beyond the school day as tutors, as club sponsors (see list in associate principal section of newsletter), and as coaches. They do so for little to no pay just because they want students to have these opportunities. I hope more and more staff members will give of themselves so that our students continue to have great opportunities at Stevenson High School. Last but not least, I am grateful for the Stevenson Community and Parents. Much of what we do would not be possible without your support. Many parents stay involved in the school even after their students have long since graduated. One example of parent involvement is the Parent Advisory Committee. Over thirty parents came to the first meeting to have a chance to talk one on one with the principal. The meeting is open to all parents and is a great opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions. This month s meeting is November 17 at 6:30 p.m. or November 18 at 8:30 a.m. Additional opportunities are available for parents to get involved. For example many parents serve on booster clubs for athletics, drama, and music. A group of parents volunteer as part of the All Night Party committee. I know all of these groups would welcome even more members. We are also looking for parents to volunteer in other capacities (please see the article in the associate principal s section). The community has shown its support in many different ways and for that I am grateful. I look forward to even more involvement in the future. I am so happy to be able to work with the Stevenson students, staff, and parents. It is my hope that everyone has a lot to be grateful for this year, if for no other reason than Stevenson is just such an outstanding place to go to school, to work, and to volunteer. Associate Principals TITAN TIME TUTORING IS NOW AVAILABLE Students who are in need of extra help with math, English, science, or social studies should attend bi-weekly tutoring sessions. These sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 to 3:15 in the school library. There will be teachers and National Honor Society students available to help your student achieve his or her academic goals. Volunteers Needed We are looking for parents who could help in various roles at our school. We need assistance in tutoring, copying, and other projects. Interested parents must be able to pass a background check. Volunteer forms are available in the main office. Math Room Parent-Math room parents work either 5 th or 6 th hour or both in the Algebra I and II support classes. The parent would assist the teacher by running stations and one on one tutoring. Math Room Parents should have a strong math background. This volunteer position would also be great for an older sibling who is studying to be a math teacher and would like some practical experience in the classroom under the supervision of an outstanding veteran teacher. Please look back here for other volunteer opportunities in the future. Parking Lot Update Stevenson High School has approximately 400 student parking spots. At this point we have sold just over 400 permits to students. All Seniors have been eligible to purchase passes since the start of the year. Currently 60 passes have been released to the Juniors that applied with the best attendance history. A reminder to all students with a parking pass, if you have trouble getting to school on time you could possibly lose your driving privileges. Any student driving recklessly in the parking lot will lose their pass automatically! Parents please do not use the bus loops for waiting or parking. These must be kept open so that the busses can safely get in to pick up their students.

The Stevenson counselors met with members of the senior class for a Senior Meeting. At that time, students were spoken with about many key issues for success throughout their senior year and the transition into college. Topics covered included graduation requirements, transcript interpretation, staying on track, the college search, application process, financial aide, scholarships, and career information. Each student received a copy of their own Educational Planning Report (transcript) and a Senior Folder loaded with a wealth of valuable information. Parents, if you have not yet seen this folder or transcript, please ask you child for it or call your child s counselor for a second copy. FINANCIAL AID NIGHT PRESENTATION Mark your calendars On Thursday, January 13, 2010, there will be a Financial Aid Night program for parents. The presentation will take place in the Stevenson High School auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The program will cover the financial aid process from start to finish. Topics will include completion of the FAFSA form, financial aid programs and policies, types of aid, changes in state and federal programs, and guidelines for applying. Time for questions and answers will also be provided. FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES As seniors are deciding where they would like to go to college, parents are striving to find the financial resources necessary to provide those academic opportunities. Each college or university determines an aid package for each student. The financial aid package that is offered is based on the school s Cost of Attendance and the family s Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Each student s EFC is determined by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application. The paper version is currently available in the Counseling Office. It is often more efficient and timely, however, to apply online. The first step in applying online is for both the student and a parent to apply for and receive a PIN number. This will provide access to information as well as allowing both parent and student to give an electronic signature on the FAFSA document. This step should be done as soon as possible - unlike the FAFSA form itself, which requires the completion of the tax return in order to enter the necessary data. The website for obtaining a FAFSA PIN number is www.pin.ed.gov. At the website, each applicant will need to give their legal name, date of birth, and social security number. In order to complete the FAFSA, parents must first complete their federal tax return for the calendar year prior to their child s start of college. Information from the return will then be used to complete the online or paper version of the FAFSA. The website to complete the online FAFSA is www.fafsa.ed.gov. On the FAFSA, students will also need to include the school code for each college and university that they are considering for attendance during next school year. The FAFSA form is sent directly to the processor in the envelope provided. The FAFSA must be received by March 1 in order to ensure student eligibility for the greatest amount of state aid, financial aid programs and monies. The student will then receive a SAR (Student Aid Report) that summarizes the information provided on the FAFSA. This report is sent to your home to be reviewed for accuracy as well as to the financial aid department of each college that was listed on the FAFSA application. Each college will then determine if a financial aid package is appropriate for the student. If so, the school will provide detailed information about what types of aid and in which amounts can be offered. The student always has the right to decline any aid offered that they do not want to accept. STAYING AHEAD OF THE GAME FOR THE SECOND TEN WEEKS OF SCHOOL... As the school year continues, students need to monitor their progress in preparation for post-high school education. Use the information below as a guideline to stay on track.
SENIORS Check your Senior Folder in order to stay on track with the Senior Checklist. Keep all college information in your Senior Folder so that important papers aren t misplaced Make final visits to college campuses that you are still considering Send back any admissions confirmations and housing deposit materials by indicated deadlines. Follow-up with your college or university to make sure they received these materials. Continue to work on scholarship searches and completing scholarship applications. Club News continued German input : Was gibt s Neues? (What s new?) The Deutschklub is up & running again this year. The club dues are $5.00 for the school year. The only deadline for the dues is before a German student wishes to participate in an after-school activity. We have planning meetings every other Wednesday morning at 7:00 in E-91 (donuts & juice are provided). Our next planning meeting will be October 21 st. The students will be finalizing their club shirt design and discussing fundraising options as well as activity ideas for November. Once a month we will have a fun after-school activity. In September we had a wonderful turnout to play volleyball against students from the French and Spanish clubs at Dodge Park. This was followed by free pizza and soda. On October 21 st from 3:30-5:30 p.m. the Deutschklub will gather at Sunnybrook for some bowling fun. Students need to sign up with Frau Spezia. The cost of $8.00 (pay at Sunnybrook) covers three games, rental of bowling shoes, two pieces of pizza, and soda. Students need to provide their own transportation. Wir werden viel Spass haben!! (We will have lots of fun!!) Reminder: All National German Honor Society members need to attend at least two Deutschklub after-school activities during the school year. (Note: The requirements to be invited to the National German Honor Society include an overall GPA of 3.0 and a German GPA of 3.6 with at least three semesters of high school German. Invitations for new members go out late February-early March.) Spanish Club is excited to have many new activities this fall. On Tuesday, October 27 th we will be going to El Charro s! Also in November we are planning an exciting bowling night. As usual in December we will be having our annual Christmas party with food, fun, and games! Lady Titan, Amanda Gardiner, goes to State Finals! Sport News The Stevenson Titans can be proud of junior Amanda Gardiner after an outstanding performance this year on the golf course. The team s captain not only performed well on the course, but also displayed her leadership abilities well as she helped teach first yearplayers the mechanics of the game. Amanda works hard on the course and in the classroom, representing Titan pride well. The Stevenson junior golfer already has achieved much this season, from winning the Macomb County tournament to taking the top spot at the MAC Red Division tournament, and she hoped for one last hurrah at the Division 1 state finals at Forest Akers West in East Lansing. "At the beginning of the season, our goal for her was to make it in the top 10 at the finals," Stevenson coach Dennis Walczak said. "The way she was playing at the end of the season, I think she can still get in the top five." Gardiner qualified for the finals after shooting an 86 at the Division 1 regional at Twin Lakes on the cold and blustery day Although her score at regional s was not her best performance of the season, Walczak believed Gardiner could contend at the state tournament because of her experience, short game and consistency. Gardiner made her third straight appearance at the finals after going as a freshman and sophomore. "You have to have confidence to come up here by yourself," she said. "Last year and my freshman year experience (when the team did qualify) helped me tremendously today." As a freshman she shot rounds of 88 and 96 for a two-day total of 184. She finished 19th last year with a 164 (rounds of 79 and 85) and earned second-team all-state honors. "She was so young as a freshman," Walczak said. "I think she learned how to deal with the pressure." This season, Gardiner has excelled for Stevenson, averaging a 38 in nine-hole dual matches. She won the Macomb County tournament by shooting a 77 at Timberwood Golf Club, and she earned medalist honors at the rainshortened, nine-hole MAC Red Division tournament at Fore Lakes Golf Club with a 2-over-par score. In one of the last dual matches of the season, she recorded her best round of the season with a 1-under-par at Port Huron Country Club. "She's very solid around the greens," Walczak said. "She's very consistent off the tee. She's always in good position to approach the green." Gardiner played well the first day in the cold weather and high winds. She scored an 83, placing tied for fourth place midway through the tournament. The greens were extremely fast, even by PGA standards, commented Walczak, but Amanda fought tooth and nail to limit the excessive putts. Gardiner joined the leaders despite the incredibly difficult greens. On greens like these, the players need to get the ball close on the approach shot in order to limit the difficulty of the speed and slope of the greens Amanda was outstanding with her approach shots. "This golf course has always been interesting to play," she said. "It challenges everything you do, and if you're not on top of your game it will kick your butt Gardiner started the final round on Saturday with a bogey, and then proceeded to burn up the course with six straight pars and a birdie. She was on such a roll, but it was cut short by a very long wait on the next tee after the birdie, Walczak said, and it seemed to kill her momentum. Gardiner tried not to allow the delay to affect her game, but it took the next four holes to regain her momentum as she shot seven over par on those holes. She finished the last five holes with three pars and two bogeys, posting an 82 for the day. Amanda s overall score for the final round doesn t represent how well she really shot today, Walczak commented, especially with the tremendous approach shots and incredible putting she had almost all day. "I felt pretty good about my ball striking and I was on target for most of my shots. My putting could have improved the last couple of days, but these are some tough greens so I can't be completely disappointed," commented Gardiner. Her dedication and hard work will undoubtedly put her in contention for the individual top honors next year. Gardiner finished the tournament with a two-day total of 165, tied for seventh place. She is nominated for the All-State Division I team and is a favorite to make the team. Gardiner adds to her honors with earning the MVP in the MAC Red and one of the top spots on the All-Macomb County team.
Swim and Dive Team Sport News continued Someone once said "great gifts come in small packages" and that is surely holding truth with some amazing talent from the Stevenson Varsity Swim & Dive team this year. With only 13 swimmers and 3 divers, two Titan athletes have had outstanding seasons. Senior, captain, Laura Chall has continued to improve all season. At the Macomb County Championship Meet, Laura swam a personal best time of 1:05.51 in the 100 Backstroke. Her swim qualified her for the MISCA State Championship meet on October 23rd. The meet was held at Eastern Michigan University and Laura finished top 50 in the state! Senior, dive captain, Ashley Hardy continues to have an amazing and unforgettable season! It is easy to see Ashley is very talented on the dive board and with all of the hard work she puts in, she deserves all that has come to her this year! At the 2009 County Meet, Ashley crushed the existing County record by over 18 points! The record was previously held by Henry Ford II graduate, Jill Davis in 1997. Ashley's new 11 dive record is 468.75 points! While she would be the last to tell you, Ashley is now the best diver to ever compete in Macomb County! Ashley placed 4th at the MISCA State Meet and has already qualified for the Division 1 State Meet in Holland. Congratulations to both of these ladies on amazing and well deserved seasons! Way to Go Titan s! The Titan football team has just completed the 2009 regular season undefeated! It is the ninth time in school history the team has won all of its games. The Titans have moved on to the state playoffs and have a possible, three more home games. That's three chances to come out and support your Titans! The first game is Friday, October 30 versus Roseville at 7 p.m. If the Titans advance, the remaining home games will be played on November 6 and 13 at 7p.m. Hope to see you there. Go Titans!!! The other requirement is a contract must be filled out, signed by the parent and student and turned in to the athletic director in a timely manner. The payment can be made in a couple of ways. A check, money order or cash is always acceptable or you can pay online by visiting our website, www.uticak12.org. Then click on schools, Stevenson. At the bottom of the page is a link to Pay Schools, this is where you will make the payment. This is monitored by the UCS Athletic Director. Pay to Participate fees help to support the district s sports program by reducing the subsidy from the general budget for athletics.

Community Announcements American Education Week (AEW) celebrates our nation s cornerstone public education For more than 80 years, our nation has set aside a week of November to recognize its public school system. This year, American Education Week (AEW) will be celebrated November 15-21. Although it has been celebrated for many years, public education in the United States goes back far longer than that. It was the prevailing belief of this nation s founders that a free and public education was fundamental to the creation and success of this country. In Utica Community Schools, American Education Week is celebrated much like any other school week with teaching and learning.
