January 20, 2017 West Ottawa Public Schools Preparing Students to Be College, Career and Life Ready! Macatawa Bay Newsletter 3700 140th Ave., Holland, MI 49424 Phone: 616-786-2000 Calendar of Events January Greetings Mac Bay Families, This letter marks our half-way point. For eighth grade parents that means only one more semester until high school. How wonderful is that! I am so excited to help with the transition of our 8th graders to high school. Remember, I was an AP at the high school for five years. If you have questions regarding the high school, please ask. I am more than willing to answer and help ease any anxieties about this big transition. Wednesday, February 8, at 6pm, is 8th grade parent night at WOHS and Showcase. Be sure to mark your calendars. Mac Bay will be hosting our 5th grade parent meeting and our 6-8 showcase on Tuesday, March 7. Please save the date. More information will be sent in the next few weeks. It is important to attend this night for several reasons. It is a night to celebrate all the great learning and activities that are going on here at Mac Bay. Also, it is an opportunity to see some of the construction that is going on within our building. Schedules for second semester were given to students today in their homeroom classes. One change you might see on your child s schedule is that they have their core classes with the same teacher, but a different hour. This is primarily due to the new elective course they take during this new semester. Change is good and it keeps things fresh and new for students. Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Pinkham have been spending many hours working on student schedules to make sure they are best for each student. Winter 2 athletic season is off and running. Please be sure to attend any of our #WOMS athletic events at either Harbor Lights or Mac Bay. February and March also mark music festival season. Mac Bay students will be competing and showcasing their talent at festivals in choir, orchestra, and band. We love for everyone to come out and see our students ROCK at any and all of these events. Sincerely, 20 Half Day of School. Respect Ownership Companionship Knowledge Success The R.O.C.K.S. winners for the week of 01/16 were: 6th grade - Shylah Dozeman 7th grade - Rachel Kennedy 8th grade - Joel Gonzalez Madison Cano Lili McMath Congratulations to all the students who received R.O.C.K.S. tickets! Respect Ownership Companionship Knowledge Success All Students Present On Wednesday, February 8, West Ottawa will have a Pupil Accounting Day. This day is a very important day for schools. The state of Michigan determines the amount of operational funds our district receives based upon the number of students present. Operational funds pay for almost all aspects of running our school system including: personnel, teaching materials and supplies, lights, heat, maintenance, bussess, fuel, assemblies, books, and athletic teams, as well as clubs and organizations. If at all possible, please reschedule any appointments your child may have to ensure that he or she is in school February 8! IB Program Informational Meeting Parents of students grades K-10, you are invited to attend the IB Diploma Program informational meeting on January 23, 2017 at 6:45pm. We will be explaining the program model, the IB courses that we offer, and the requirements to earn an IB Diploma. We will also be sharing pictures of WOHS IB Diploma alumni and testimonials. Meeting will be held in the LGI Room at the North HS Student ROCKS Rewards Store Coming Soon! At Macatawa Bay, we feel strongly about providing a culture that emulates our high expectations. Respect, Ownership, Compassion, Knowledge, and Success are well known to the Macatawa Bay Family as our "ROCKS". Staff work collaboratively to create lessons and activities that teach, emphasize, and promote these positive behaviors within our school community on a daily basis. We also LOVE to celebrate when our students are showing one or more of these characteristics in our school community by giving them ROCKS tickets. Currently, our 6th and 7th grade students earn popcorn on Fridays with their ROCKS tickets. 8th grade students are entered into a weekly drawing where teachers donate various prizes for the winners. We are in the beginning stages of discussing the possibility of opening a school store with prizes for students to purchase with ROCKS tickets that they earn. The store would be open one day a week, during lunch. In order to make this happen, we need YOU! If you are interested in organizing, volunteering during the lunch hours, donating items, or have any other ideas to offer, we d love to hear from you! Please contact Mrs. Pinkham at pinkhaml@westottawa.net or Mrs. Montgomery at montgomeryc@westottawa.net.
