Sport at Charterhouse We are looking for a talented, experienced and inspirational Director of Girls Sport to take the lead in overseeing all aspects of girls sport. Charterhouse is growing its sporting provision. As part of our exciting development strategy to enable the School to become fully co-educational across all year groups, from Years 9 to 13, we are building our capability to promote excellence in all areas of sporting provision at Charterhouse for both girls and boys. At Charterhouse all pupils are able, and are expected to participate in a wide range of sports. There are both competitive inter-school sports programmes and also inter-house competitions, providing opportunities not only for the most talented performers to develop and flourish but also for the many others who are keen to practise and compete at an appropriate level. We run over 20 different sports and across last academic year, the School played over 970 sports fixtures fielding 130 teams. Sport is at the heart of what pupils choose to do outside the classroom at Charterhouse and we are delighted to have had pupils play representative sport in cricket, 3

fencing, football, shooting and skiing over the past 12 months. Our sporting opportunities also include a weekly lifestyle programme for those with more of interest outside of team sports. Classes include spin cycling and yoga. The Sports Performance Programme for sports scholars and talented and aspiring sportsmen and women delivers a comprehensive offering of conditioning support, workshops and seminars. Our continued outreach work with Prep Schools continues at a pace with exciting masterclasses run in cricket, hockey and tennis for boys and girls along with our annual football 6-a-side tournament. The focus on moving towards a fully co-educational School and delivering a co-curricular offer best suited to this support will present some very exciting opportunities for boys and girls sport. The Sports Department is made up of 8 full time staff who are hugely committed to sport and the School s co-curricular programme, coaching and leading teams in all three Quarters, being involved in out of term time pre-season camps as well as overseas tours. 4

Job Specification The Director of Girls Sport is responsible for overseeing all aspects of girls sport, reporting to the Director of Sport. The post is designed for an experienced and ambitious professional who can lead the development specifically of girls sport from 13+ onwards and help to promote excellence in all areas of sporting provision at Charterhouse for both boys and girls. The post holder will work closely with the Director and Deputy Director of Sport, and will sit on the Sports Management Group. The post holder will be responsible, through the Director of Sport and Second Master, to the Headmaster. The Director of Girls Sport will coach across all three terms ( Quarters ) and possess the ability and appropriate qualifications and specialism to lead in at least two of the School s core sports for girls hockey, netball, and cricket or tennis in the summer. Specific responsibilities: To have the overview of girls sports provision In conjunction with the heads of each sport, coordinate and oversee fixture provision, ensuring that it is balanced and appropriate To advise on staffing, training and budgetary needs, with particular oversight of the girls core sports across each Quarter To offer direct line management to the heads of girls core sports, meeting with them regularly to review and preview provision for both competitive and non-competitive opportunities To offer direct line management to selected heads of other sports where girls participate 5

In conjunction with the Deputy Director of Sport, monitor girls sports selections and advise on allocation of pupils to suitable choices using SOCS co-curricular In conjunction with the Director of Sport, have oversight and management of the coaching of both competitive and non-competitive girls sports In conjunction with the Head of Performance Sport, ensure that Strength and Conditioning expertise and Sports Performance Programme opportunities are deployed effectively Oversee structuring, planning and delivery of girls House competitions In conjunction with heads of girls core sports, ensure that an effective termly review is carried out In conjunction with heads of girls core sports and the Director of Sport, monitor and advise on annual development reviews/plans In conjunction with the Director of Sport and Deputy Director of Sport, oversee the planning of girls sports tours or joint sports tours Maintain excellent working relationships with other departments within the School such as Grounds and the Hunt Health Centre (School s medical centre) Ensure that the Charterhouse Values are observed and encouraged through sport External Relations To advise on, and oversee, communication on girls sport with parents In conjunction with the Head of Performance Sport and Director of Sport, help deliver Sports Scholarship selection To work with the Director of Sport, the Prep Schools Coordinator and the Admissions Department to promote sport at Charterhouse, via Open Days and in the wider community, and to recruit talented pupils to the School Host the girl-focused Prep School tournaments & events, overseeing and managing Prep School and sports-based taster day events In conjunction with Director of Sport and the Prep Schools Co-ordinator, ensure that an accurate record of Prep Schools sporting contacts is maintained, and that the monitoring of both boys and girls appropriate for 13+ and 16+ Sports Awards is updated and acted upon In conjunction with the Director of Sport, liaise with local, regional and national sports bodies and establish appropriate close relationships Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities Pupils and sporting teams as directed by the Director of Sport. Responsible for managing kit (equipment and clothing) within a budget, pre-authorised by the Director of Sport. Ensure that staff, pupils and visitors comply with all aspects of health and safety as required under the provisions within 6

the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the School and Sports Centre s Health and Safety Policies, Normal and Emergency Operating Procedures and any other relevant and/or subsequent legislation or Code of Practice. Person Specification Relevant Experience/Knowledge & Technical Competencies ESSENTIAL The ideal candidate should be an outstanding coach, with a high level of organisation mixed with enthusiasm for participation Previous experience of coaching or teaching within an independent school will be beneficial Display an understanding of sport as part of a thriving co-curricular provision An ability to work alongside individuals within the Sports Department and provide support for coaches across the school is key Sound track record of coordinating a team to achieve particular goals Ability to nurture and support pupils welfare with well-developed pastoral instincts Experience of undertaking a wide range of complex tasks, often with a high degree of autonomy A proven track record of making a positive difference to young people s lives IT proficiency, particularly with Microsoft office Work, Excel and PowerPoint and use of the internet Qualifications ESSENTIAL hold a minimum level 2 coaching award in chosen sports DESIRABLE it would be advantageous if the candidate has experience of either playing or coaching at a high level degree or equivalent qualification/experience qualification in fitness or strength and conditioning Personal Competencies / Skills strong interpersonal, organisational and administrative skills ability to communicate effectively to pupils, parents, staff and the local community emotional resilience and stamina capable of turning a vision into results ability to inspire and motivate others through verbal and written communications good time management skills; superb organisation proactivity and assertion patience and enjoyment of attention to detail ability to use initiative enthusiasm and confidence a genuine desire to contribute to developing the whole child ability to organise and manage time effectively a desire to be involved in the co-curricular life of the school 8

Overview of Terms of Service It is anticipated that working hours for this role will be 20-25 hours/week, in agreement with and as directed by the Director of Sport, principally during term time, with evening and holiday work depending on the sports tournament and fixture needs at the time, although the precise working hours will depend on the priorities at the time. Bank holidays may be working days for which a day s holiday will be given in lieu. Whilst a degree of flexibility can be built into the hours, you will be expected to be available at all times that school sport takes place, including Saturdays (and occasional Sundays) during term-time. There will be a requirement to keep up to date and attend relevant training courses including Level 1 Safeguarding; Minibus Driver Assessment, First Aid and isams training; as well as other School-wide briefings and training such as Fire Prevention and the Headmaster s Start of Quarter briefings. Wellbeing - Employee Assistance Programme ( EAP ) Life presents many challenges which often impact upon an individual s ability to lead a balanced and productive life, both at home and at work. In the workplace, there are many people to whom teachers can turn for support, help and guidance including the Head of Department, School Chaplain, School counsellor, Human Resources team, the teacher s mentor but sometimes teachers may want to talk outside of work. The School provides all staff with access to an EAP service that is designed to help staff talk through any worries and concerns they may be experiencing. 10
