Junior High Differences 8 classes-45 minutes in length with difference teachers The Advisory period is used to work on homework, study, intervention, tutorials or participate in various assemblies such as Pep Rallies. Backpacks can be carried to each class. Lunch is 30 minutes and all 6th graders have the same lunch period. Tardies! Students must get to class on time every period. 5 minute passing period between each class. 4 core classes (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) 1 elective P.E. - you are expected to dress out and participate everyday. Students must wear ID s Daily! Cell phones may be carried during the day, but must be silent when students enter the classroom. Teachers determine if it can be used in the classroom.
Three Class Formats Academic For everyone, on grade level, more time to review concepts, more tutoring provided, prepares students for college as well as other post secondary education PreAP More challenging, fast paced, requires independent learning, prepares students for AP classes in high school *Recommend current average of 85 or higher in 5th grade subject GT Must be screened and identified
PreAP Math Big difference in # of objectives covered 5th grade approx. 60 objectives 6th grade Academic approx. 64 objectives 6th grade PreAP over 90 objectives with some being 7th grade objectives * 6th grade PreAP: covers all of 6th and ½ of 7th grade math Pre-AP level of instruction will focus on preparation for taking Algebra I (HS credit) in the 8th grade.
Exiting PreAP Automatic Exit Failing PreAP at the end of the 6 weeks Schedule will change and possibly alter other classes in your schedule PreAP exit petition Initiated by parent/student All parts of form must be completed and signed Changed at grading period
Electives All Junior High Students Must Take a Fine Arts Whatever you choose, you will be in for the entire year. You will attend daily and be graded. DO Consider carefully and choose the one that is of most interest to you DON T Let your friends influence your choice! Reading Elective and Math Lab Based on FIRST administration of the STAAR Test scores (takes the place of PE or Elective). Small class sizes 15:1 ratio to provide support in Math or Reading.
Physical Education Both boys and girls (separate gyms) Graded class/ attend everyday Dress out in uniforms Lockers in gyms *No Athletics (competitive sports) in 6th Grade
Clubs and Organization Pep Squad Students must participate if they want to try out for cheer in 7th or 8th grade Robotic Club Kindness Club Student Council

The Course Verification Letter serves as a list of classes that you have requested. Electives are based on AVAILABILITY. Follow instructions on Course Verification sheet on how to make changes. We will not change electives after Course Verification sheet are due.
