Dakota Coach North Dakota High School Coaches Association Official Publication Fall 2002 Volume 36 No. 1 Executive Secretary s Desk Last year the NDHSCA office informed the membership of medical complications of fellow coaches. Those news items drew many comments throughout the state as being very worthwhile. The major focus of this report is to inform the membership of the health of our brothers and sisters in the field. President Jack Carlson informed the NDHSCA office that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Jack s contact to me from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was a shock to the North Dakota coaching community. He indicated the diagnosis followed some medical exploratory procedures over the past three to six months when he and his doctor were concerned about possible ulcers. Although procedures were negative last spring, Jack and his doctor agreed to venture to Mayo as a follow-up to the local evaluations. Mayo medial staff found tumors on his liver, in his lungs, and on lymph nodes. Obviously, I have received Jack s permission to inform our membership of his dilemma. I am certain that he wants the information that is shared to be as accurate as possible. (Continued on page 3 ) Curt Herman Resigns Curt Herman tendered his resignation in a letter to the NDHSCA Executive Secretary s Office as Chairman of Lions All Star Basketball on August 22 nd. His resignation is effective immediately. Curt sited several reasons for his resignation. First, he has taken on some new duties that he did not perform in the past. Secondly, he did not rid himself of the athletic director position as he had tried to do. Curt indicates that he has all the materials in hard copy and floppy disc format to assist in the transition to a new person. The first communication that is necessary needs to be sent at the beginning of the basketball seasons. (Continued on page 3 ) Curt Herman Resigns - Continued Gelaine Orvik noted that Curt has been an outstanding performer as Lions Toenies Appointed All Star Volleyball Chair Scott Toenies, Hillsboro, was appointed as NDHSCA All Star Volleyball Chairman by the NDHSCA Executive Board at its meeting in July. The vacancy developed when Paula Pierson (Wolf) resigned from the position in June. Ms. Pierson sited personal reasons for her resignation. Scott was happy to accept the position when he learned that he had Jay Schobinger s assistance for the West and for Class A selections. Paula has vowed to assist in any way she can including sharing the hard copy and floppy discs of materials that she has used in the past. Scott is in his 17 th year of coaching. He has also been head football coach in Hillsboro for several years with a 43-26 coaching record. His volleyball record is 228-102. Scott brings a national spotlight to his position as he was featured on a National Geographic video of a brain surgery that was performed while he was conscious. His victory over cancer is just one more victory to add to his list of accomplishments, but the victory was perhaps the greatest victory. Scott will continue to focus the NDHSCA credibility of having the best possible volleyball players who are willing to accept the player guidelines to compete in the annual summer match. PLEASE NOTE: This issue contains all of the forms that are in use by the Association. All of the forms may be photocopied. The Association urges all head coaches to provide copies of the membership form for every coach on his or her staff. All athletic directors are also urged to provide membership applications forms for every coach in his or her school. A copy of this issue of the Dakota Coach is provided for every 2001-2002 member. A copy is also sent to every athletic director in the state.

President s Message Meet The Challenge Jack Carlson, Dickinson High School NDHSCA President On behalf of the NDHSCA Executive Board, I would like to welcome you back to a new and hopefully successful school year. We just completed another successful convention and banquet. The clinicians that presented were superb. Gelaine, John, and Karen do a great job scheduling speakers, organizing awards and award winners, and maintaining communication with hundreds of people to make sure everything is going to be in place for you the coaches in attendance. I am very honored to take on the responsibility of being President of the NDHSCA. Our association is on solid ground because of the leadership of previous presidents, our membership of coaches, and the endless amount of work done by Gelaine, John, and Karen. My challenge to our association is twofold. First, we need to continually work toward increasing our membership. Last year, we had approximately 850 members. We should be trying to meet the goal of 100 new members for the upcoming year. There are a large number of coaches in our schools that don t join the association. They don t feel we have anything to offer them. In recruiting them, talk of the clout we have in making changes through the advisory committees. Also, talk of the awards they can qualify for as a head coach, assistant coach, or junior high coach. And finally, talk of the educational opportunities available at our summer convention. Take pride in being a member of the NDHSCA. Second, I would like to see a concerted effort made to mentor younger coaches in your school and athletic conferences. Many of you have experience and expertise to share with the younger coaches in our schools. Share your ideas on sportsmanship. Share your ideas on handling altercations and confrontations with parents, athletes, coaches, and adult fans. And finally, share your knowledge and expertise as it pertains to your sport. In closing, remember that you are an important part of the education our student-athletes receive. Athletics is an extension of the classroom. If we continue to focus on winning alone, we are missing the big picture completely. There are thousands of teachable moments throughout a sports season, let s take advantage of them. I hope all of you find successes in your sports season. 2 NDHSCA 2002-2003 Executive Board President Jack Carlson (h) 701-483-6247 1079 Sims Street (w) 701-456-0030 Dickinson, ND 58601 (f) 701-456-0019 Jack.carlson@sendit.nodak.edu President-Elect Randy Johnson (h) 701-748-5634 701 highway Drive #98 (w) 701-748-2345 Hazen, ND 58545 (f) 701-748-2342 johnsonr@hazen.k12.nd.us Vice President Todd Olson (h) 701-780-9034 733 Horizon Circle (w) 701-787-4046 Grand Forks, ND 58203 (f) 701-746-2387 Todd_Olson@fc.grand-forks.k12.nd.us Immediate Past President Dave Dougherty (h) 701-444-3865 Box 1225 (w) 701-444-3624 Watford City, ND 58854 (f) 701-444-3612 ddougherty@4eyes.net Past President Terry West (h) 701-787-5792 2225 34 th Street South #15 (w) 701-787-4196 Grand Forks, ND 58201 (f) 701-746-2332 Terry_West@fc.grand-forks.k12.nd.us Executive Secretary Gelaine Orvik (h) 701-237-9711 1738 Prairie Lane (w) 701-298-4275 Fargo, ND 58103 cell 701-793-5472 gorvik@cableone.net Assist. Executive Secretary s Desk - Continued I encouraged Jack that the best doctors were working for him. I also assured Carlson that all of his coaching brothers and sisters would be on their knees in prayer for God s special healing hand as well as for strength and assurances to the Carlson family. Jack intends to visit with doctors on Monday, August 26 th regarding treatment. Jack hopes to return home through Fargo to spend the night with Kyle and family on Tuesday before returning to Dickinson on Wednesday. One of the complications involved in any report of this nature is to be as factual as possible and to include as many reports as possible. However, the NDHSCA Office is limited to the information that it receives. Therefore, I urge every member to inform me of any such medical complication, and I will certainly inform the masses. I hope that all of the volleyball coaches will extend special assistance to Scott Toenies as he begins his new assignment as volleyball all star contests chair. The Association and the membership also owe Paula Pierson a strong gratuity for her efforts over the past several years in guiding the matches and administration so expertly. I hope the basketball community will search diligently for recommendations for a replacement for Curt Herman. Curt has been very valuable as an executive board member and also as all star basketball chairman. He has promised his cooperation to assist the person or persons who follow him. Thank you, Paula and Curt. North Dakota High School Coaches Association: I wanted to take the time to send my sincere thanks for selecting me as a member of the Coaches Hall of Fame. This was an honor that I was not prepared for and the banquet made it even more special. The people who continuously work to support and improve the NDHSCA deserve to know that their work is greatly appreciated. Working at the state level with the Athletic Directors, I know how much time and effort are required. Please accept my sincere thanks on this award. I will cherish it forever. Del Kessler All Star Basketball Chairman by upholding the game s guidelines and retaining the Association s credibility in all phases of the all star basketball contests. Gelaine added that Curt worked tirelessly in preparing mailings for the players and coaches. He was always present for games and supervised every aspect of the competition. Most of all, Curt was a true professional in every sense and expected the same demeanor from coaches and players. Curt is a fine individual with a great sense of the duties that are necessary for success in the all star basketball contests. His intensity to uphold standards was never more evident than this past year when he insisted that the player guidelines needed amendments to make guidelines specific to the intent of the rules. The NDHSCA Executive Board has requested that the All Star Basketball Chairman s position be declared open and that interested people contact the NDHSCA Executive Secretary or any other NDHSCA Executive Board Member to declare their candidacy in a formal letter of application. North Dakota High School Coaches Association, Thank you so much for the delightful banquet. It was a lot of fun. Thanks for the opportunity to receive the Tom Lium Scholarship Award which will be a big help when I go to college. Thanks Again! Alex Kingsley North Dakota High School Coaches Association, Thanks to the entire NDHSCA board for a great Hall of Fame weekend. Both my family and I appreciated the way we were welcomed by the organization. My family was impressed with the banquet. Thanks for everything you do for the coaches and athletes of North Dakota. In particular, thanks for your support of swimming at the clinic. Ken Disher North Dakota High School Coaches Association, I would like to express my gratitude for the scholarship I was recently awarded. It is an honor to receive this from your organization. This award will be very beneficial this upcoming fall while I attend NDSU, where I will be majoring in nursing. 3
