Term 2, Week 10 Upcoming Events As we draw to the close of Term 2, there are many highlights to our learning program that we can reflect on, be proud of and thankful for. Some highlights of note are: Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, Whole College Anzac Day service and photo, 20 th Anniversary of Good Shepherd Lutheran College celebrations and Fete, Year 4 Camp at Riyala, Mother s Day Mix n Mingle, Cricket clinic, Disco, as well as our regular Assemblies and Chapels led by students showing their learning journeys. We continue to utilise the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme and see student action from their learning. This term I have had a number of proposals from students as they respond to their learning in meaningful ways. Some of these highlights for the term have been: Leanyer Campus Sports Day Wednesday 27 June Last Day of Term Friday 29 June First day of Term 3 Tuesday 24 July Grandparents and VIP Day Tuesday 31 July Year 5 Camp 15-17 August Book Fair 20 to 23 August Book Parade Tuesday 21 August Theme To the Book Fair and Beyond Year 5 Action Shop students decided to create their own organisation to support another organisation (The Starlight Foundation) while exploring the transdisciplinary theme of How we organise ourselves ; Year 4 organised their own excursion to further explore the transdisciplinary theme of How we organise ourselves particularly around responsibility and roles of services and public spaces in the community; Year 3 have presented me with a booklet of ideas for playground improvements drawn to scale as part of their Maths measurement unit. All these learning opportunities empower our students to be responsible citizens of the 21 st century. I look forward to where their continued learning takes them. Also as the term draws to a close we will be farewelling Miss Georgia Dickson. Georgia has been an invaluable member of our teaching team for the past 2 ½ years and we will miss her smile and care. I would like to take this opportunity to publically thank her for the service she has given to the Leanyer Campus as Year 5, Transition and Learning Support Teacher as well as our Pastoral Coordinator. Many blessings for your travels. We also farewell the Weir family (Charlotte 2LK) as they relocate to NSW and wish you God s blessings for your new adventure. This week, semester reports will come to you via SEQTA Engage. If you have any questions or queries regarding these, please direct them to your child s class teacher in the first instance. Portfolios will also be coming home sometime this week with your child. These are for you to look at with your child but please remember to return these early in Term 3 so that we can continue to add your child s work to these. This is a different system from last year but we are hoping to put the whole year into one portfolio for ease of records. As our term draws to a close and we reflect on the many opportunities God has given us, we can also focus on our Chapel theme for the term which is the Fruits of the Spirit. These fruits can be seen in our students in many different ways and we thank God for the caring, Christian and flourishing community that we have. Have a safe and blessed break and we look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday 24 July.

PYP End of Semester Reporting Units of Inquiry As end of semester reports are about to be made available to parents through SEQTA Engage, it is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on information that you will be receiving as a part of your child s Unit of Inquiry results. Knowledge and Understanding of the Central Idea this is the big idea or concept that we wish our students to explore and know about. It is significant, relevant content that comprises of more than one discipline of learning to address the theme of the unit of inquiry. Understanding of Key Concepts these are the powerful ideas that students must explore and re-explore in order to develop in-depth understanding. They are purposefully chosen to drive the inquiry to engage student learning. Application of Approaches to Learning these are a valuable set of skills that contribute to our students constructing meaning when they acquire them and apply them to any learning that goes on within the classroom, and in life outside our school. These skills are categorised as Thinking skills, Social skills, Communication skills, Self-management skills and Research Skills. Attitudes knowledge, concepts and skills alone do not make an internationally-minded person. There is also a focus on the development of personal attitudes that contribute to the well-being of the individual student and the group. Action it is believed that the education of our students must extend beyond the knowledge and understanding to include thoughtful and responsible action. A successful inquiry should lead to appropriate, student-initiated action as a result of their learning. This action will extend the student s learning or may have a wider social impact. Rebecca Fletcher PYP Coordinator

Year 4 Excursion Year 4 students have been inquiring into community services and spaces locally and around the world. Some students researched the Leanyer Recreation Centre and the class decided it would be a would be a great place to go on an excursion to learn more about how it operates. We used the public bus service to get to the centre which was a new and exciting experience for some. We spoke with a lifeguard, played on the playground and had lots of fun in the water. Thank you to our special helpers Mr Speed and Mrs McCourt for coming along and helping us.

Disco Thanks to all those people who helped out with the disco. Everyone that went had a great time dancing, making their own smoothies and playing games. Hot dogs for dinner was GREAT!! We raised $542.10 for Bethany Home.

Year 1 Excursion to Crocodylus Park On Thursday of Week 9, 1SF went on an excursion to Crocodylus Park as part of their learning within the Unit of Inquiry, 'How the world works. The Central Idea students inquired into within this unit is 'The design of buildings and structures are dependant upon the environment and available materials'. Much fun was had exploring the park, observing the various structures and considering the materials needed to house the fascinating creatures. Highlight's included the crocodile and lion feedings, in addition to getting up close with the reptiles. A big thank you also to parent helper Sharon Wallace for assisting the class on their outing.
