Kensington s K-Kids service club recently raised $1,028.54 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by collecting pennies for patients. Mrs. Nancy Bondy is the club advisor and coordinated this fun activity. A Great Thank You to Mrs. Bondy, students, and staff for supporting this excellent cause which supports patients and families who are fighting against cancer. Great job, K-Kids! Counselor Corner: Welcome students, parents, and families! My name is Melissa Liberatore. As Kensington s School Counselor, I work to support academic, personal-social and career growth. I work with students in the classroom and in small groups and individually. I am always happy to speak with parents. Communication and collaboration between home and school are critical to student success! This year s Guidance theme is icommunicate: ilisten, ithink, italk it Out using I-Statements. The focus is healthy and productive communication. Students will be encouraged to practice and use communication strategies to facilitate healthy interaction with classmates. This month, I encourage parents to help children develop good study skills. It is important to designate a space at home to study. You may also want to consider helping your child organize his or her work area and assignments. You can set goals with your child to organize and use time effectively. Additionally, setting a routine that your child will follow every day to complete work is really important. Still, it is helpful if parents can be available to provide assistance when kids ask for help. The development of good study skills helps children create lasting habits that will serve them well as they progress through school (and life). New State Assessments: Ohio s Next Generation Assessments (NGA) are here. Our Rocky River teachers in K-12 have been working with dedication to transition to Ohio s New Learning Standards and assessments for several years. Ohio s new computer based tests assess student knowledge and skills as well as critical thinking and problem solving. Although these tests are new, our students have demonstrated great confidence and skill during our initial test sessions. Please note that grade 3 students participate in the Reading OAA on April 22 nd and only the Ohio Next Generation Assessments for math. Students in grades 4 and 5 will only participate in the new Next Generation Assessments. We encourage students to attend school and participate on these important testing days. The term disability includes such conditions as hearing impairments, visual impairments, specific learning disabilities, behavior disabilities, developmental disabilities, speech and language disabilities, orthopedic and other health disabilities caused by such conditions as epilepsy or cardiac illness and other severe or multiple disabilities. Although many school age disabled children are identified and currently being served by the Rocky River City School District, pre-school children, ages 3-5, with disabilities may be unidentified because parents may not be aware that programs and services are now available through the public schools. Community members can help us with this important effort. If you know of a child in the Rocky River City School District with a disability who is not presently attending school or receiving services from another agency, please contact Jennifer Norman, Director of Pupil Services, at the Rocky River City School District Board Office, (440) 356-6006. All Annual Notices are available on the district website-www.rrcs.org
