Bancroft s School e-bulletin Monday 19 February 2018 News and Notices On 1 February a record number of 131 pupils from the L4 th to 5 th Form sat this year's UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge paper; 118 gained either a Gold, Silver or Bronze Certificate, which are awarded to the top 40% of candidates nationally. Four of them (Alex Yan 5W, Swasthi Surendran 5W, Jathusan Vijayakumar U4S and Pari Jethwa L4) have qualified for the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers, indicating a level of achievement which places them in the top 500 for their respective year groups. Special congratulations to Alex Yan for his Best in School perfect score performance, for a second year running, demonstrating exceptional skill and accuracy. Half term saw a very successful cultural and study trip to Salamanca for thirty three members of the 5 th and 6 th Form who are studying Spanish. They all made the most of their lessons in the mornings, as well as the extra conversation lessons for the 5 th Form and the lectures on topics such as Spanish History and Art which the 6 th Form attended. Calendar and Forthcoming Events On Tuesday 20 February all U4 th pupils will take part in a half day workshop. The theme is What Employers Want, Communication Skills, Study Skills and Goal Setting. The day starts with a briefing in Chapel by the lead presenter, Andrew Wright; the U4 th will then participate in interactive workshops with five presenters. In past years, the U4 th have found these workshops both useful and enjoyable. On, Hazel Ross is leading a Strings Masterclass starting at 6.30pm in the Prep Hall. Hazel graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a Distinction for her Diploma in performance. She has played with many of the UK s leading orchestras and made numerous TV appearances. Hazel is also an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. We are very excited to welcome Hazel to Bancroft s to work with some of our talented string players. Everyone is welcome but all string players should definitely try to attend! Musical Theatre Charity Evening. The Sixth Form, with the aid of friends from throughout the School, are putting on a charity evening in the aid of Young Minds and Cancer Research on Friday 23 February at 7.00pm in the Prep Hall. You will be treated to songs and dances from Broadway favourites such as Chicago, Fiddler on the Roof and Grease, amongst many more. Tickets are 5 for adults and 3 for students/concessions and are available from Reception. Any donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully received. Our next Bancroft s Business Breakfast will be held at The Reform Club in London on Wednesday 7 March, at 7.45am. We have three guest panel speakers from the BBC, BBC Worldwide and Google; the morning will provide a great networking opportunity at an architectural hidden gem in the heart of London. This event is open to all parents and their guests; tickets are 15 each, please contact susan.day@bancrofts.org at the OBA office to book your tickets. Bancroft s School and the Parents Association will be hosting a fun Football Match for Staff V Parents on Sunday 25 March, 11am at West Grove. Refreshments will be provided. The match will be eleven-a-side and the PA are looking to gather a squad of eighteen players. The deadline to return the application forms for the 2018-2019 U4 th Spanish Exchange trip to San Sebastian (for current L4 pupils) is Tuesday 13 March to Mr Urreaga in Room 116. The gala was closely tied from start to finish with many close races. National Schools Championship, 2 nd KS3 (U16), girls. Well done to the Bancroft s team of Shreeya Mehta, Varsha Sethuraman, Anya Shah and Roshni Parmar, who played Chingford Foundation and Townley Grammar School winning both matches 5-0. They will represent Redbridge in the London Youth games on 20 March. In their London qualifier, the Bancroft s A team finished 1 st, the B 2 nd, D team was placed 3 rd and the C team 4 th.
