JC Wheeler Public Library 1576 S. Main Martin, MI 49070 269.672.7875 www.wheelerpl.michlibrary.org We have recently received a most generous grant from the Pilcrow Foundation! They provided us with $601.15 worth of books for our young people! Our own Friends of the Library contributed $200 towards these books also! We also were given an extra $404.01 worth of math & science books provided by a generous donation by Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman of Colorado. These will be displayed during our 100 year Anniversary Open House on February 9th. We are very thankful for such generous donors as this. John C. Wheeler was born on May 31, 1840 in Fairfield Twp, Lenawee County, MI. His family moved to Martin Township in 1844 when his father bought land here. John was married in 1862 to Mary Benson. Unfortunately, John lost his 4 children and then also his wife in 1890. There is no record of the causes, although one can speculate that there may have been some serious illnesses for them all to pass. Mr. Wheeler then married again in 1892 to Miss Katie Wall. Research discovered evidence of two other marriages, one adopted daughter and no living biological children. More historical details will be on display. Mr. Wheeler died on January 22, 1914 and left $5,700 to the Martin Township to build a library. It s because of Mr. Wheeler that our library is here today. Help us celebrate our 100 years in Martin on February 9th! The Friends of the Library have commemorative totes for sale for $12 as a fundraiser. They are available at the library.
