Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist that advocated for non-violent protests to end racial segregation and inequality. His efforts contributed to the passing of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. His speeches served as inspiration for fighting racial injustice worldwide. I hope our students enjoy the day off, but I also hope they know the contributions of the man for which this day is honoring. This week is exam week. Themes for the State Festival alternate annually between Main Stage and Studio events. In even years (2018, 2020 etc), Main Stage is serious and Studio is humorous. In odd years (2019, 2021 etc), Main Stage is humorous and Studio is serious. Schools may participate in either or both (Studio or Main Stage) of a tri-level series that highlights traveling shows. A maximum of 12 shows per division will advance to the State Festival giving participants the opportunity to present their productions and see a variety of other shows. Main Stage shows are the traditional one-act competition that MIFA has hosted for more than 30 years with larger sets and full technical aspects. Studio Productions are meant to focus on the actors and the script and making little to no use of extensive technical aspects of a show like sets, lighting or props. More details to come including the official addition of the rules to Speech Activities.
