EVALUATIVE REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH U.G AND P.G. 1. Faculty profile adequacy and competency of the faculty. The department of English is one of the oldest department of the college founded in 1948, since its inception, the department catered the students of intermediate till 1961. In the year 1962, BA program started under the combinations of HEP and HEK. The combination of HSE was introduced in the year 1996. The combination of JEK is introduced this year(2017) Currently the department of English is having the student s strength of 3060. The department is run by four full time lecturers and seven guest lecturers. The faculty is competent in handling undergraduate programs and it is competent to use bilingual teaching to address the students. The department also has the P.G studies with the strength of 38 students. The department caters to the need of marginalized sector of the community. 2. profile entry level competencies, socio-ecomic status, language proficiency etc. The students entry into the college is made as per the rules of the government of Karnataka, Kuvempu University, on the basis of academic merits and reservation policy. The department caters students belonging to diverse socio-ecomical background. Majority of the students belong to the middle and low income groups. The Academics proficiency of the students is relatively moderate both in English and Kannada language. 3. Changes made in the courses or programs during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes. The University guideline for the syllabus are strictly followed by the department. The curricular is revised by the University for every two years, and the faculty is actively involved in the process. The suggestions made by the faculty have been well taken and incorporated by the university. The department has introduced the new combinations of HSE & JEK, where English is studied as an optional subject. A there is PG in the department all the staff members equally share responsibilities and they have struggled with students in order to bring good results. The department is proved to get many ranks in PG it is backed by very hardworking enthusiastic students 4. Trends in the success and drop-out rate of the students during the past two years. Since 2003-04 the semester scheme was introduced by the university. The success rate of students is comparatively high and the department produced consistently good results. The success rate in the department is UG 85% & PG 100%. The dropout rate during past two years is 0%.
5. Learning resource of the department library, computer and other resources. The departmental books are housed in the college library many varieties of books with national, international, regional areas of English Language add them. There are also many books with different fields of literature. Computer and internet facilities are avail from the computer lab. Special lecturers and seminars are conducted in the seminar hall of the college. 6. Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in the teaching/learning. The department follows modern teaching methods. The students are encouraged to take part in group discussions, seminars on selected topics within the syllabus. The faculty has acquired computer skills to handle ICT in teachers/learning The department has audio visual aids, OHP- DVD- CD`S and other teaching aids used by the faculty to supplement lecture method of teaching. 7. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students. The faculty members involve themselves in counseling the students at academic and nacademic level. Head of the department acts as counselor to help the needy to come out of the nut shell. Even personal counseling is conducted for the students at the time of the admission. A day orientation program was conducted for the PG students from one of the resource person from the department of PG studies in English, Kuvempu University. A special guest lecture was also conducted for the PG students by a resource person on World Drama, Post Modernism, Linguistics etc., The department is preparing to give two days carrier guidance to the outgoing students of final BA. 8. Details of the faculty development program and the faculty who have been benefited during the past two years. The faculties of the department enrich their kwledge through participating in seminar, symposium, workshop, orientation and refresher courses. The faculties are kwn for their kwledge sharing in various academic committees. 9. Participation/Contribution of teacher to the academic activities including teaching consultancy and research. The department has three senior and one freshly recruited lecturers through KPSC. All the faculties have TQM,OC,RC and also workshops conducted by the Kvempu and other University.
10. Collaboration with other department/institution at state/ national/ international levels and their outcome during the past two years. The department has individual collaboration with Kuvempu-University and it is extending support to the student-center activities. 11. Priority area of research and details of the ongoing projects, important teworthy publications during the past two years. As such, the department of English has t taken up any research projects, but the department ticed the area like World Literature, Eco Literature, American Literature, European Literature, Indian Writing in English, Dalit Literature etc. 12. Placement record of the past students and the contribution of department to aid students placement. Most of the students opt for their higher studies that is Post Graduation. A few students opt for professional courses like Bed, LLB etc., and some students select State civil services through KPSC. Some also have outscored in competitive exam and working as Sub Inspectors, Assistant Commissioners post etc. The institution has a placement cell, which has the record of placement details of the students. The faculties of the department have been guiding the students about various avenues of job opportunities and creating an awareness for competitive examinations of both state and center government. 13. Plan of action of the department for the next five years. The department of English is planning to adopt these activities in the next coming years. 1. To start a Language Lab. 2. To conduct intercollegiate debate competitions 3. To conduct Remedial classes 4. To maintain the primary needs in language, we have to conduct spoken English classes for the students who are poor in English.
