The Department of Psychology, Governement College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram is happy to announce a National Seminar on Psychological Counselling on 6th and 7th of January 2012. The theme of the seminar rests on ideas that are of high contemporary social and academic relevance. As we all know, the demand for psychological counselling in the Indian society has grown over the years as a result of increased public awareness. However, there is also a growing concern about ensuring quality of counselling services. Despite the functioning of several Govt. and Non-Govt. agencies in the field of counselling, there is a dearth of primary data regarding various aspects related to counselling. Some of the areas that require more sustained and empirical research are the prevalence of various problems in our society, the nature and effectiveness of counselling, the kind of training received by counsellors etc. NSPC-2012 is organized to explore the present scenario of counselling practice in our society and to inform academicians, practitioners and authorities about the scope for improvement. The organizers of this seminar deem this theme as extremely relevant, as counselling has become a paradise lost for both the psychologist and the client. The seminar highlights the need for appropriate training for counsellors, sustained and empirical research in the field of counselling and pertinent state policy to ensure quality of counselling services. The sessions of the seminar are organized so as to generate discussions in this regard. A special session is planned for the presentation of minor exploratory research works on school counselling undertaken by researchers from various psychology institutions across Kerala. We hope this exercise would throw light on the present scenario of school counselling in Kerala. We cordially invite you to become part of this experience of academic illumination by contributing papers and sharing your knowledge. Let us all come together to elevate the field of psychological counselling to greater heights. Sincerely yours, Dr P.G. Sushama Aboobakkar T. V. P. Shiju Joseph Principal, Govt.
