November is a very crowded month in the school calendar, with numerous celebrations and events scheduled, including the State election. Please check the school calendar, and your class CPR reminders, for forthcoming events to ensure that you don t inadvertently miss an important event. Our students have a busy month with incursions and excursions: Prep visit to Lone Pine; Year 4 students and the Year 6 Ekoala students off to the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre; the annual visit from Timbarra to the Preps; Year 1 excursion to Moreton Bay to explore environmental issues in the Bay and visits from Camp Hill kindy students in preparation for their transition to primary school. The students very much enjoy these programs and do gain much from the experiences. During November our younger students will be singing at the Wednesday junior campus parades please watch out for notice of your child s performance. The P&C Colour Run will be held on Friday 17 November I know that this will be a very exciting day for our students. Thank you to the P&C Executive for organising this fund raising event. This week I had a letter from a neighbour of the school who asked that I share her disappointment with the litter that is left outside the immediate area of the school on the weekend. She informed me that she is aware that the area is a public place and that many people use the footpaths, but she was keen to ask that our families be vigilant to the dumping of rubbish.
I am sure that families are hearing a lot about the programs that their sons and daughters are participating in at school and encourage you to ask what goals your children are setting for themselves. Goals need plans and a parents role in supporting their children develop their plans are pivotal to success. Deputy Report Last week a number of our girls in Years 5 and 6 attended the Young Change Agents Workshop which aimed to teach them how to be social entrepreneurs over a three day workshop. The workshop was held at Corinda State High School and the girls learnt about Social Enterprise where they brainstormed concepts, researched their topic, developed their business and pitched their idea to a judging panel. They were up against many other groups including a group of teachers and two groups of High School students. The girls were very excited to win the pitch against the other teams with their Tommy the Turtle business. Congratulations to the girls for their exceptional work. One of the girls, Neave, writes her thoughts about the day below. Our Entrepreneurs Experience Our group was named the "Wise Chicken Nuggets" and the members were: Neave, Addison, Emma and Carmen. We were all offered this wonderful opportunity to attend this awesome experience. On the first day we created a bike using: pipe cleaners, paddle pop sticks, match sticks, plasticine, tape and straws. Then we created a poster with three major problems in our community. We then chose one problem to base a number of questions on -we chose littering. On our second day we answered these questions which helped us plan our business: the purpose, the customers, the problem, the alternatives, the solution, the key metrics, the high level concept and the unfair advantage. On the third day we created a PowerPoint on Tommy the Turtle and came first! Habits of the Mind The You Can Do It s aim is to strengthen the five social, emotional skills and values known as the 5 Keys which all children need to manage. The students have engaged in identifying ways in which we can be resilient when faced with feelings such as anger, sadness or worry: Relax and think good thoughts Find something fun to do Take 3 deep breaths Find a buddy to talk to Think of all the things you are good at Count to 10 slowly Find an adult to talk to Use a squeeze ball Sports News Term 4 PE Lessons This term, all Prep - 6 classes will be in the swimming pool for their PE lessons. Prep - 2 students will focus on a learn to swim program covering basic swimming and aquatic skills. Year 3-4 classes will further develop their abilities in competitive strokes. Year 5-6 classes will learn about Flippa Ball, a modified version of Water Polo. Prep - 2 classes require a ratio of 1:10 adults to child in water supervision. If you are able to help your child s class with swimming, please see their classroom teacher. Students will need: Swimmers (one piece for girls, preferably speedos, football shorts or skins for boys) Rash shirt Swimming cap Towel Swimming bag Goggles are optional. Met East Aquathon & Triathalon Trials Any student interested in trialling for the 2018 Met East Aquathon (run, swim, run) or Triathlon (swim, bike, run) teams, please see Mr Bourke. Age divisions are: AQUATHLON - 11/12yrs - Born 2006/2007 JUNIOR (Triathlon) - 13/14yrs - Born 2004/2005 Junior Campus Swimming Carnival The date for the Junior Campus swimming carnival is Friday 1st December. The Prep Year 2 carnival will be broken up in separate sessions, with one year level per session visiting the pool at a time. Allocated times are: Prep 9:00am-11:00am Year 1 11:30-1:00pm Year 2 1:30-3:00pm Any parents that are able to help their child s class with changing, please see your child s class teacher. All students will swim in 2 swimming races, freestyle and backstroke. Senior Campus Swimming Carnival The date for the Senior Campus swimming carnival is Tuesday 28th November. The Year 3-6 swimming carnival will be an all-day event. All students will have the opportunity to race in all 4 swimming strokes. Events will include 50m age championship races and 25m races, as well as some novelty events. At the senior swimming carnival, students compete in their age group, not their year levels. Senior Campus Swimming Carnival Race Nominations Students who wish to compete for age championships must qualify for 50m races in their PE lessons. This will begin around week 7 this term. The 6 fastest times for girls and 6 fastest times for boys in each age group and event will qualify to race in the 50m races on the day of the carnival. Students who do not want to compete for age champion or do not qualify for 50m races still have the opportunity to race in any or all of the 25m races. 2018 Lytton District Swimming Trials Students who are turning 10-12yrs old in 2018 have the opportunity to trial at the Lytton District event. This will be held on Friday 9th February 2018. 3
Interested students would need to meet qualifying times set by our school representative district in order to be nominated. Personal best times can be considered, as well as times used when trialling for our 2017 school carnival. Please see Mr Bourke or Mrs Roberts to express interest. Library News It has been a busy few weeks in our Junior and Senior libraries. Here are some of our special events! Early Literacy Pre-prep children and their carers have been visiting each Tuesday morning 9:00 9:45am for a story and Library borrowing. These sessions continue until the 22nd November. This is a great opportunity for new students to become familiar with the school environment and meet some of their new classmates before commencing Prep in 2018. Author Visit We would like to thank Harper Collins Publishers and Riverbend Books for providing the opportunity for our Year 3 students to listen to interstate authors Matt Stanton and Katrina Nannestad. They spoke passionately about developing characters and using your imagination when writing. Matt demonstrated, through illustration, the concept of combining two unusual ideas to make a new idea. Our new character Sean was wearing a taxi! Katrina elaborated on using people and animals you know as the basis for character development. Camp Hill C & K Visit On Wednesday 1 November we were fortunate to have 50 Pre-Prep students from Camp Hill C&K visit our Junior Library for a transition to school. Following a story they enjoyed reading many of our wonderful books, before visiting the Prep classrooms. It is so beneficial to provide positive informal experiences to allow these young children to make that first transition as seamless as possible. Two more classes will be here on Wednesday 8 November! Networking with these early childhood professionals is always a pleasure. Our visitors were very impressed with the participation and interest our Year 3 students displayed. Watch out for the competition entry form coming home this week! Last weeks for borrowing! Music Matters Celebration of Music Concert Our Music Concert will now be happening on Monday 20 November 2017 and we certainly hope that there are no severe weather events forecast for that date. Students involved in the concert should have received an information letter with all of the relevant details. Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy the talent of our music students. The Concert will be held in the Multipurpose Hall, commencing at 6:30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation and there will be a raffle with some great prizes. Ukulele Performance Our small, but dedicated group of Ukulele students performed at the Bulimba Uke Fest recently. They gave a wonderful performance and looked fantastic. Thank you to Mr Griffin for encouraging and rehearsing with the students. Instrumental Program 2018 Students who have received a place in the 2018 Instrumental Program should have received a confirmation letter. Please return the acceptance form as soon as possible. Classroom Music 2018 Students in Years 3 and 4 have been learning the recorder this year. They will continue learning in 2018 and will need to keep their recorder for next year s lessons. P&C News What a fantastic night for our annual Trivia Night. Thanks to all who came along. The outfits were certainly memorable, we are sure we have certainly qualified for one of those Moments in History. The Fair Meeting is at 6:00pm Wednesday 15th November followed by the final P&C Meeting for 2017 at 7:00pm. Both will be held in the senior campus staff room. We invite you to come along and see where the Fair is headed for 2018 and also the School Council Elections. Upcoming Events School Council Elections The Camp Hill State Infants & Primary School (CHSIPS) School Council was established in 2014 and is comprised of elected parent and staff representatives. The function of the School Council is to guide the broad strategic direction of the school: a) monitoring the school's strategic direction; b) approving plans and policies of the school of a strategic nature and other documents affecting strategic matters, including the annual estimate of revenue and expenditure for the school; c) monitoring the implementation of the plans, policies and other documents mentioned above; and d) advising the school's principal about strategic matters. We are calling for nominees for election to the replacement role of TWO of our parent representative positions. The election will be held at the next P&C General Meeting on Wednesday 15th November 2017. The positions are available to any parent of a child at CHSIPS. In order to be considered for the role, the nominee must be nominated by two (2) P&C members - this can be done in person at the P&C meeting. If the nominee is unable to attend the P&C meeting they must submit a written nomination signed by the nominee and two nominating P&C members. Tuckshop Tidbits A 50c processing fee applies for placing orders over the counter, even if you use your own bags. Last day of trading in Term 4 is WEDNESDAY 6th DECEMBER. As we move closer to the end of the year, the tuckshop inevitably runs out of menu items. Items will be listed as out of stock on the flexischools menu and substitutions will be made where possible. Resilience Program Drumbeat Mr Mal has been running this program since late term 3 and it is exciting to watch the students grow in their drumming ability and apply the lessons learned in the group around effective communication, respect and valuing people and relationships. Seasons for Growth Seasons is a grief and loss program based on the belief that change and loss are part of life and grief can be a natural response. It has been running for a few weeks with a number of students to help them process life change. If you feel your child may benefit participating in the course in 2018 please contact the school.
