State of the College for ATHLETICS Fall 2018 Prepared by Sandi Taylor, Director of Athletics Co-Contributor: Keith Ford, Associate Athletics Director Bakersfield College Intercollegiate Athletics provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in 20 post-secondary programs. Participation in any of the 20 intercollegiate programs provides a unique and diverse experience. Individual skill development includes physical skills, as well as building communication skills, critical thinking and analysis skills necessary for team success. In the previous academic year, athletics had 16 of 20 programs advance to post season play, 4 conference championships and 1 individual state champion. Student athlete advisory council was established and successfully participated in community service events, on campus activities and hosted a year end BBQ for all student athletes with awards. The athletic department underwent a comprehensive review and developed a 3 year strategic plan: Athletics Mission Statement: To compete for championships; provide a first-class student-athlete experience; cultivate students who complete academic goals or transfer to four-year institutions; and serve as a source of pride for the College and Community Program Goals: Goal1: Support Academic and Athletic Excellence Renegade Athletics commits to provide a clear path to success and completion for student-athletes in a championship-focused environment. Goal 2: Enhance the Quality of the Renegade Student Experience Renegade Athletics is committed to providing a comprehensive and positive experience for studentathletes. Goal 3: Develop a Culture of Organizational Excellence and Community

Renegade Athletics is committed to promote a civil and collegial environment that values diversity and inclusion, respect for others and accountability. Goal 4: Maximize Athletic Facilities and Resources Renegade Athletics will maintain high quality practice and playing conditions for all athletic facilities and grounds to maximize resources. Goal 5: Strengthen Marketing and Community Engagement Renegade Athletics is committed to maintaining a positive, high profile status in the community and to increase attendance for all sport events. Learning Outcomes: (Goal 1) The student athletes are an affinity group that must meet California Community College Athletic Association eligibility criteria in order to compete on an intercollegiate team. These eligibility standards align with the emphasized momentum points for greater success in completion of career pathways by the institution. According to the data provided by Cal Pass Launch Board for Academic term, student athletes at Bakersfield College are achieving academic success at a higher percentage than the general student population. (See data chart below) There are two significant data areas where student athletes surpassed the general students: 1. Completed 30 or more units is 27% student athletes compared to 2% general students. Student athlete s average units attempted 32.09 units and successfully completed 23.28 units. 2. Maintained full time status for fall & spring semesters 75% student athletes compared to 11% general students. Average GPA for student athletes was 2.55 and general students carried an average GPA of 2.50. Transfer level English and Math completion. 1. Percentage of student athletes to complete a transfer level English course is 76% comparable to the general student with 63%. Only 43% of student athletes who started below transfer level English courses completed the course in two years compared to 65% for the college. 2. Math data is not available on Cal Pass, however the Educational Advisor for Athletics has identified this course has an issue for our student athletes.
