Newsletter 30 18th th May 2018 Y3/4 Summer Games Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a friendly session of summer games at Horbury Academy. Unlike the usual inter school tournaments, this event was organised so that children could play in mixed teams with children from other schools which is a good way to encourage getting to work alongside new teammates and encouraged children of all sporting abilities to take part. Code Club Over the last term, Year 5 have been developing their Computer Coding skills under the guidance of one of our parents; Mrs Beardsmore. Their latest challenge has been to combine lots of techniques in a national Code Club competition. Well done everyone for your designs and especially to Joy whose design made it onto the Code Club website. Thank you Mrs Beadsmore for all your time and support! Road safety Next week, we have a number of road safety awareness sessions being led by the Council Road Safety team. Foundation and Class 1 will be exploring how to travel safely in a car with Teddy Takes a Tumble, Class 2 will also be looking at In Car Safety and Pedestrian Safety, whilst Class 3 will be discussing cycle safety (this is not a practical cycling proficiency session) and Year 6 will be thinking about how to keep safe when travelling to their High Schools more independently. Happy Birthday! We celebrate all our children s birthdays at lunchtime with a birthday candle in a bun and a chorus of Happy Birthday. Today we celebrated Mrs Lintott s big birthday in the same style! Thank you Mrs Lintott for everything you do in the kitchen and dining room and enjoy your special day. Sports days Sports days will be as follows: Foundation: To be confirmed Key Stage 1 (Class 1): Wednesday 13 th June, 2.00pm Key Stage 2 (Class 2 and 3): Thursday 14 th June, 1.30pm Community News Confirmation The parish church is holding a confirmation service on Sunday 22nd July at 10am at St Peter s. Confirmation completes what began at baptism (Christening) and makes us a fully-fledged member of the church. It is also the point at which many Christians begin to receive Holy Communion. If you are interested in exploring confirmation for yourself or your child (children from Year 5 upwards are welcome and there is no upper age limit!), please call 01924 576745 or e-mail Fr Christopher on fr.christopher.johnson@gmail.com. Preparation sessions will be held from Friday 8th June. Middlestown Gala Saturday 19 th May 12-4pm at Denby Grange Cricket Field, Overton Tennis Saturday 19th May is the Great British Tennis Weekend at Slazenger Sports Club. Free lessons for kids with Wakefield School of Tennis! Register at http://www.horburytennis.co.uk 1

Class News Foundation Stage Lower Nursery This week we took our learning outside whilst the sun was shining. The children made dens, built sand castles and used a variety of mark making equipment to write their names. Evie chose to use chalks and was very proud of her mark making, saying it was going to be her name. Reception/Upper Nursery This week we finished our book the Dinosaur sleepover. The children received a letter from the dinosaur who, after his exciting party, decided to take a holiday. The children wrote back to the dinosaur telling him what they have been up to so far this half term and included a photo of their learning. The excitement of dinosaurs led the children to come up with the idea of creating their very own outdoor Jurassic Park. To prepare for this, the children have been working independently to create their own dinosaur models which will rule the outdoor landscape next week! The children have also taken on the task of becoming archaeologists and have been digging up dinosaur bones in the foundation classroom, discussing and sharing their findings with their friends. Watch out for a Jurassic Park coming soon to a playground near you! Mr Allerton, Mrs Lovell, Mrs Stearne, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Gaimster Class 1 We have really enjoyed our art lessons with Mrs. Holden this half term. Our learning has been linked to our Great Fire of London topic and we have developed skills in order to produce a piece of work. We began by completing a colour wheel to learn about colour mixing before looking at warm and cold colours and which would be more suitable for representing fire. We also created wax resist pictures and looked at shape, line and pattern in order to create a silhouette of a 17 th Century house. It has been so much fun, thankyou Mrs. Holden! Miss Schofield, Mrs Ross Class 2 Another busy week this week! The children have been finishing their insect based DT project. Over this half term, the children have designed and planned the making of various bugs and creepy crawlies. They have put in lots of effort and shown great perseverance when bringing their creatures to life and this is clear when looking at them. Not only were they tasked with the creation of the models, they also had to evaluate them and use them to inspire three different types of poems: Haikus, Kennings and Limericks! Miss Aspinall, Miss Riley, Mrs Brammer 2

Class 3 Our Year 6 children certainly did themselves proud this week when faced with their SATs tests. Each and every one of them had a positive, growth mind-set attitude, showed support for one another and enjoyed the challenge! Now they can breathe a sigh of relief that they are all finished. A huge well done to all of the children. You have all worked so hard! Year 5 spent a fun morning in Forest Schools on Wednesday with Mr Hammond. They worked hard as a team to create the longest possible water run without losing any water and had to problem solve when it collapsed. The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning, as did Mr Hammond! Mrs Findlay, Mrs Callaghan Save the Sports Days: Year 1 and 2 Wednesday 13 th June, 2.00pm Year 3-6 Thursday 14 th June, 1.30pm Parents meetings for the upcoming residential visits will take place on the following: Monday 21 st May Boggle Hole, 6.15pm Thursday 24 th May Whitby, 6.15pm Our popular Summer Fair and talent night will be taking place on Friday 6 th July. Our meetings are informal and open to all parents to come along to so if you would like to contribute ideas or help with some of the organisational jobs, please look out for details of the next meeting.
