Students dismissed at 1:30pm Hi everyone! STAFF NEWS Next year, Laura Currington will take up a placement at Highton Primary School, near Geelong. Laura and her fiancé, Josh will be married over the Christmas vacation and are looking for a home closer to their families who live in the western district of Victoria. Laura is a fantastic teacher and will take a wealth of skills to her new school. We thank her for the fantastic work she has done in the classroom, for leading our whole school Maths curriculum this year, for coordinating our First Aid and facilitating our Junior School Council and their wonderful fundraising events throughout the year. Bree Jennings will also move schools next year. Bree will become the team leader of 5 Foundation grades at Croydon Hills Primary School, a school with over 500 students. Bree began at Boronia West in 2008 and has worked in our Junior area during that time. She is an outstanding teacher who is highly respected in our community for her dedication, effort and genuine passion in providing our students with wonderful learning opportunities and supporting her colleagues in their teaching. Bree has undertaken many extra roles during her time at our school. This year, she had coordinated the whole school English program, the Library program, including the Premier s Reading Challenge, Fly Into Foundation Transition Program and was instrumental in beginning the Walker Play Based curriculum in Foundation, Years 1 and 2. Croydon Hills PS is certainly extremely fortunate to have Bree join their staff in 2014. We thank both Laura and Bree for all their contributions to our school and genuinely wish them well for the future. We hope that they take with them some great memories of Boronia West as they pursue their career opportunities and happiness in their own family lives. SCHOOL STRUCTURE 2014 We understand that some families may be concerned about some current staff leaving, but changes have all been made on personal grounds and are most certainly not reflective of any disenchantment or concern with the continuing operation of the school. Even though many of our staff members have been at Boronia West for a number of years, it is quite a usual event for staff in schools to change their work location many times throughout their career. Boronia West is here to stay! We have already begun the process of filling 2014 positions through the DEECD recruitment process. At the moment we expect to run 5 grades in 2014: 5/6; 4/5; 3/4; 1/2 and a Foundation/1. This

year we have 30 grade 6 students exiting the school to go on to secondary school which has impacted on our structure for 2014. In the last several years our enrolments have increased significantly, and unexpectedly, at the beginning of each year, making some grades larger than anticipated in our planning. Boronia West Primary School will continue to provide an excellent education to all students in a safe and very caring environment with highly professional and dedicated teachers. HOLIDAY VACATION CARE Sherpa-Kids will run a Holiday Care program at Boronia West from 6 th January to 24 th January 2014. The flier providing you with all the relevant information and booking forms is on our website. Don t forget that Government approved Child Care Benefits and Rebates are available. PUPIL FREE DAY 28 th JANUARY 2014 Please find attached a booking form for OSHC for 28 th January 2014 which is a designated Pupil Free day. Students begin school on 29 th January. ASTHMA Please make sure that if your child has asthma, we have a current inhaler (such as Ventolin) at school. Just a reminder that all asthma plans should also be kept up to date. If your child s plan has changed, we need an updated copy for our records, please. (We cannot administer any asthma medication to a student unless we have an asthma plan, provided by a doctor, at school.) CAROLS AFTERNOON Thursday 5 th DECEMBER Just a reminder that this year Carols will take place in the afternoon. Originally advertised as beginning at 3:00pm, the afternoon will now begin at 3:15 with the older students performing first. This will give the F/1/2 students time to get back from the pool as they continue their swimming program. participate in this aspect of the school program. It is most interesting that there is an opinion amongst some Grade 6 students in particular, apparently supported by their parents, that they can opt in and out of programs as they desire. This is a situation which is quite unfamiliar to our school. The Bike Edn program is part of our official curriculum that will be assessed for final student reports. On Friday 6 th, all participating students need to bring their bikes and helmets to ensure they are in safe working order reading for the following week. Students will run through a safety/awareness and skills assessment to ensure they are ready to travel in a group outside the school and so qualify for their bike licence. Riders with licences will participate in the full day out on the following Friday. CBA SCHOOL BANKING Kathleen, our local CBA rep, attended assembly on Friday to remind students of the latest school banking competition and to use their tokens to claim prizes before the end of the year. Kathleen also thanked Claire Bignell, on behalf of our school and the CBA corporation for her long and dedicated service to school banking at Boronia West and introduced our new school banking officer, beginning in 2014, Maureen Mitchell. SCHOOL FEES Just a reminder that if paying by instalments, the next payment is due on Wednesday 11 th December. Cheers Marg HOOPTIME STATE FINALS As Mr T mentioned at Monday s assembly, it has been many years since our school was represented in Hooptime State Finals. We congratulate Jacob W, Brandon S, Bryce C, Jack R, Emma B, Tiffany H and Melissa B on their skills and team work to get to the is level. BIKE ED Grade 5/6 students are getting close to their Bike Ed day out on 13 th December. It has been disappointing that we have a small group of senior students who have chosen not to
