Kaplan Aspect Washington, DC As the capital of United States, Washington, DC is a beautiful city with all of the cultural advantages of a major metropolitan area. We have excellent theatres such as the Kennedy Center, famous monuments, the Smithsonian Museums, and many prestigious universities. International students feel quite at home in Washington s multicultural neighbourhoods. We have a great mix of cultures and backgrounds in the people who come to this area to study, work and travel. The Washington, DC Kaplan Aspect school offers firstclass modern facilities with an extensive library of self-study material to be used in school. The self-study material includes access to the school s video lab with over 25 TVs and VCRs and DVD players, to the computer lab with over 25 computers with free Internet and WiFi access for international students. Additionally, the DC school has an English Language lab with computers for students to practise the TOEFL ibt. School Facilities Classrooms The Washington DC Kaplan Aspect School has 9 classrooms for group classes and two additional small-group/private tutoring rooms. All of our classrooms are clean and spacious with plenty of room for our students to spread out. The classrooms are equipped with tables and chairs ideal for group and pair work exercises - with a whiteboard for the instructor s presentations. There is also a state of the art auditorium for student use. Multimedia and IT Centre There is a computer lab in the Kaplan Aspect School, with more than 25 computers for student use. There is also free Internet and WiFi access for international students. Library Our lending library has a wide variety of textbooks, dictionaries, specific-skill texts and reference materials for students to use for additional practice. We also have multimedia materials (CDs, DVDs and CD ROMs) for students to borrow and use during their structured study hours. Student Lounge Two microwaves, vending machines and tables are available in the student lounge, which is open while the school is open. There is also a rooftop patio with deck tables and chairs and a shaded seating area. Cafeteria There is no cafeteria, but students have access to microwaves and vending machines in the student lounge and there are seating areas where they can eat. With workshops, parties, walking tours, museum trips, sporting events, and more, you ll discover the best of Washington DC. These activities are lead by a member of the Kaplan Aspect staff and will help you to meet new people and discover the city. Kaplan Aspect classroom Your first day Computer facilities On the first day of your course you need to report to the Kaplan Aspect School, which is located at 2025 M Street, NW at 9:30am. Your first day will be a Monday unless there is a national holiday on the Monday - in which case your first day will be Tuesday. Your course will begin with an all-day introduction, which will include: Welcome and Introduction Meet the English Programs Staff and New Class mates, Collect Documents English Placement Exam New Student Orientation, Overview of Washington, DC & The Kaplan Aspect School, Academic Orientation, F-1 Student Orientation, Housing Orientation Please bring the following with you: Passport and I-94 form (Green piece of paper you will receive upon arrival to the USA) USD 40 book deposit I-20 form (Certificate of Eligibility), if required Proof of health insurance, if required Your address in the USA Passport photo for student ID Course Payment/Voucher, if available Payment for outstanding balances All your Kaplan Aspect documents and a pen and paper for notetaking purposes. At the end of the day you will receive information about your class schedule, classroom number, study level, elective course, and the hours you are to attend class. You will be assigned the most appropriate class for your level of English. 2

Local Information Transport - buses and trains The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority offers transportation services by bus and rapid transit rail throughout the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland. Typical fares range from $1.25 to $3.90 one-way. The DC Center is serviced by the Red Line at the Dupont Circle Metro stop and by the Orange and Blue Lines at the Foggy Bottom Metro stop. Banks and Post Office Regional and international banks such as Chevy Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, and Wachovia are all conveniently located within walking distance of the school. Restaurants and cafés There are numerous independent and national cafes and restaurants located around the school. Popular lunch options include Le Baguette, McDonald s, Moby Dick, and Fuddruckers. Washington Monument Jazz concert Department stores and supermarkets The local Department Store is Macy s with locations at Metro Center and Pentagon City. Safeway, Giant, Trader Joe s, and Whole Foods all have multiple supermarket locations in the District of Columbia. Church / Mosque The Washington National Cathedral is located 3 miles from the DC Kaplan Aspect Center. The Islamic Mosque and Cultural Center is located 2 miles from the DC Kaplan Aspect Center. Transfer Information Kaplan Aspect transfers Depending on your airport and flight your driver will pick you up either in front of the row of telephones in the International Arrivals Terminal or at Baggage Claim. A confirmation of the meeting point, drop-off location and driver will be e-mailed to you before arrival. Your driver will be holding a sign with the Kaplan Aspect logo and your name. Independent Transfers There are three airports that service the Metro Washington, DC area Dulles, National and BWI. Rates vary depending on distance to the drop-off location for most car and shuttle services. Kaplan Aspect school reception Washington Flyer Taxi offers rates between $51 and $58 one-way to/from Dulles International Airport. Call 703 661 6655 to book a transfer. Super Shuttle offers service between all three airports and points throughout the Washington, DC area. Rates are typically cheaper than taxis but the trip usually takes longer as it is a ride share service. Book online at www.supershuttle.com. Washington Flyer Coach Service offers transfer from Dulles to the West Falls Church Metro Stop. This is a good option for those whose final destination is located close to a Metro stop.
