Classroom Corner What s happening at Grapeview. Kindergarten is researching and studying motion for the science fair. We have been experimenting with push and pull, and writing observations. Next week we are going to explore surfaces and gravity! The 3rd grade class is really enjoying their new classroom with their beautiful view of the woods. Stop by our shared learning center to see our nature inspired poems about the magnificent Pacific Northwest. The 3rd grade class is also getting excited for our science fair projects and listening to other students present their science questions and hypotheses. We have brilliant students! Ms. Nelsen Mrs. Gill s 5th grade is finishing up their Earth in Space unit in science. They have made paper 3D planets and turned the classroom into our solar system. Our sun had to be 109 inches in diameter with Earth only being 1 inch in diameter. We used what we learned about fractions in math to figure what the scale would be to have our solar system to fit in our classroom. The class had to measure the room and to research what the diameter (in miles) was for each planet and how many miles they were from each other. Today, they will be making edible planets using Rice Krispie treats! This is what a few of the students learned: Hunter that the planets are really huge, but small when compared to the whole solar system. Michael that Uranus has rings. Dakota that Saturn is filled with hydrogen and ammonia. Isaac that Mercury is the closet planet to the sun. Alyssa that Jupiter is the second largest planet. Ms. Jennings: Middle School Social Studies In social studies we are continuing our civics unit. We have discovered the types of government found around the world, with a focus on our Democratic form of government. We have learned about the types of Economic systems found around the world, with a focus on ours = a Market/ Capitalist Economic system. We are now beginning to learn about how our Constitution was developed, and will move onto the Branches of Government soon! The countries we are developing have paralleled the learning; students have developed their own Countries and determined their forms of Government, leaders, and Economic systems.

Warmest greetings from the gym! We have been working really hard recently but having boat-loads of fun, too! Our weeks usually are broken up into skill-based days and fitness-based days. For the past several weeks our focus has been on Ultimate Frisbee during our skill-based days, and our focus is on speed training/running mechanics during fitness based days. In Ultimate, we have worked together to learn how to throw a Frisbee in three styles: backhand, forehand, and the hammer throws. After working with the different throws, we have focused our attention on learning the rules as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Students are currently working in this phase of the unit in small groups, helping one another gain understanding. Once we have a clear understanding of how the game works, we will play a few games of Ultimate!! During our fitness-based days students have been working to demonstrate proper running form. We have worked on running fundamentals like arm motion, body lean, knee drive, and foot placement. After practicing these running mechanics, we have focused our workouts around lots of plyometric exercises to promote activation of our students fast-twitch muscle fibers. With track and field coming up in the spring, we should see some fast, powerful athletes out there!! In the primary grades, K-2, we have focused our practice on understanding the fundamentals of moving. We are practicing swinging our arm and legs in opposition as we walk, march, jog, gallop and skip. We are also taking time to work on moving sideways while crossing our trail foot both in front and behind the lead foot. To help practice these skills we have played games like Hit the Deck and used team relays where we demonstrate different movements. At the elementary level in grades 3-5 we have also been working on learning some basic Frisbee skills like the backhand throw, and consequently, catching a Frisbee. To practice these skills our classes have played a variation on the game of Frisbee Golf! In teams of three, students threw the Frisbee to each other around a course designed on the playground. We were very thankful for the beautiful weather! These grades will also be learning the basic framework of an Ultimate Frisbee game like how to pass, defend, and move into open space. It s always a great day for PE! -Mr. Mork Grapeview School District does not discriminate in any programs or activities on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.
