Gator Bytes Nov. 16 2016 Learning, Leadership and Laughter...The JRG Journey J.R. Gerritts Middle School * 545 S. John St. * Kimberly, WI * 920-788-7905 State Championship Football Game on Friday, November 18 Congratulations to the Kimberly High School Football team on their great success this year! The Championship game will be held in Madison on Friday, November 18 at 4:00 PM. We will follow our normal class schedule that day. JRG will not be providing a fan bus, however, interested students were provided a permission slip on Monday during TLC. Permission forms are available in the Main Office. We are also providing it on page 3 of this Gator Bytes. Time missed will be considered a Vacation Day as game attendance is optional and not a JRG sponsored event. This form must be on file by Thursday for all students attending the game. Please contact the office with any questions at 788-7905. Parent Teacher Conferences on November 16 and 17 Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, November 16 and 17 from 5:00-8:00 PM. Students will have a 2:00 release on Wednesday only. Conferences on are a first come, first served basis and last approximately 5 minutes per teacher. If you feel you will need more time to discuss your student s progress, please contact the teacher to set up a meeting outside of conferences. More information is available on page 3 of this newsletter. Food Drive Through November 18 This year, JRG Student Council is putting on a food drive to benefit St. Joe s Food Pantry. Please consider bringing in non-perishable items to help those in need as St. Joe s helps over 1,000 families each week within our community. Items will be collected during TLC between November 14-18. The TLC with the most items collected will win a pizza party! Boxes will also be available during Parent-Teacher conferences on November 16 and 17. Let s work together to help those in need! Scholastic Book Fair Available During Conference Times Who: All JRG students, staff, and parents are invited to check it out! What: The Scholastic Book Fair, featuring middle school and young adult books for purchase Where: JRG large gym hallway When: November 16 & 17 from 5PM-8PM Why: Having a library of books at home for a child to access is just as important as providing access to a local school or public library. Young adults need books that are readily available at home for any time when they are looking for a reading material. Purchasing the relatively inexpensive books offered through the Scholastic Book Fair may be an opportune time to start developing, or continue adding to, your home library. Wait! There s more! You can walk away from the book fair with more than just books! Two Kindles will be raffled off, one to a seventh grader and one to an eighth grader who purchase at least one book from the book fair. Also, by donating $1 toward the purchase of library books OR by donating to your teacher s classroom wish list, you get the chance to play our new "Punch Out" game which could reveal one of many exciting prizes, including free books, T-shirts, posters, pencils, and more! Congratulations to JRG s All-State Choir Members JRG students Kaden Kemp, Emily Merten, Keegan Schuelke, and Emmaline Van Dyke have each been selected as members of the 2017 Mid Level Wisconsin Choral Directors Association (WCDA) All-State Choir. They will be performing at the Grand Theatre in Wausau on Saturday, January 7, 2017 as part of the annual WCDA State Conference. Congratulations to our very talented choir students!

Gator Bytes J.R. Gerritts Middle School Page 2 Please Check Our Lost and Found Our lost and found area, which is located outside of Student Services, has been collecting a lot of items. Please have your student check if they have misplaced anything. All lost and found items will be available during Parent Teacher Conferences. Any remaining items will be donated. 8th Grade Planning Conference Parents of 8th Graders: Have you signed up for your child s 8th Grade Planning Conference? If not, we still have two dates available for Group Conferences: Monday, November 21 and Wednesday, December 7. Both meetings begin at 6:00 PM. Please contact Kim Kane in Student Services to set up a time. Cough and Cold Season Is Upon Us With the weather changing to colder fall temperatures, the health room is seeing an increase in students with cold symptoms. While we do have Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Benadryl in stock, any other type of over the counter medication needs to be provided from home. All medications must be kept in the health room, including cough drops. If your child is in need of any medication at school (stock, or over the counter), please fill out a medication consent form and bring it to the main office. The forms are available in the office and on our website under Forms and Documents. We also encourage students to carry a water bottle with them as good hydration is key. Thank you for your help in keeping our kids healthy and safe! Appointments, Forgotten Items, and Messages to Students We commonly see a number of items brought to the office to be given to students throughout the day. This includes lunches, phones, musical instruments, and athletic clothing, as well as calls to get messages to students. While we realize that some things are unavoidable, please try to ask the office to get a message to your child only in cases of emergency. With over 780 students at JRG we prefer not to interrupt learning any more than absolutely necessary. As we receive items or messages, students are sent a quick message in their email notifying them they need to stop in the office. Students are then responsible to stop in the Main Office after class. If your student contacts you from school concerning a forgotten item, it is their responsibility to check in the office between classes. If they do not check between classes, they will be called during announcements at the end of the day to pick up their item. Students who have appointments during the day are expected to come to the office in the morning to receive a pass. Please send them with a note in the morning indicating the time they will be picked up. We write the pass 5 minutes earlier than the indicated time to ensure your student is here to meet you when you arrive. It is then their responsibility to be aware of what time they are to come to the office to meet you. We would prefer to not have to call a classroom to remind students of their appointment time once they have received a pass. Thank you for your support in creating a great learning environment at JRG. Emergency Medications Please be aware that emergency medications that are provided for use during the school day will not be accessible before or after school hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to have emergency medication available during school activities such as clubs and sports. If an emergency arises and a student does not have their emergency medication available, 911 will be called.
