Jaguar Journal School News P a g e 3 529 Education Savings Plans For all current or perspective St. John the Baptist school families, please remember that effective January 1, 2018 families may use 529 education savings plans for K 12 tuition at private schools. This is not only for parents but also grandparents, godparents and aunts/uncles. Named after section 529 of the tax code, the 529 plan is a tax-advantaged plan operated by a state or an education institution designed to encourage savings. The federal tax advantage is that earnings on funds contributed to 529 accounts are not federally taxed when withdrawals are used for educational purposes. Separate accounts can be set up for each child in school, with a $10,000 per student maximum amount that can be distributed tax-free per calendar year. You may enroll directly with a state 529 plan manager or through a financial advisor. If you have any questions about this type of plan, please contact a 529 provider, a financial advisor, or our Business Manager Mike Newton at 513-367-9086 x211 or mnewton@stjb.net.
