We are now approaching the end of the academic year 2011/12. This academic year is important to Hong Kong education in the sense that it marks the transition from the old Hong Kong Certificate of Education to the new Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education without any S. 5 graduates from the secondary schools. Students who were admitted to our Department in the year mostly came from completion of a one-year remedial course like Foundation Diploma or Project Yijin after their S. 5 studies. As a result, our teaching staff experienced a challenging year in bringing some of these students up to an academic level comparable to their predecessors who mostly had completed and passed the Hong Kong Certificate of Education and hence were much more academically prepared to complete our higher diploma courses. With the help from our Language Centre colleagues, English remedial courses for those weaker students were provided to enhance their English standard. Most of these students, after receiving our dedicated support and care, should be able to progress to their second year of study. This year proves to be a particularly hectic year to our staff. A lot of preparation works are done in developing curricula and systems to support our new courses for a new batch of students from the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education in this September. In February, we successfully completed the internal validation of our new Higher Diplomas which are of 2-year duration consisting of 5 semesters. One of the particular features of these new Higher Diplomas is that students are required to complete at least 90 hours of mandatory workplace attachments before they can graduate. In the last six months, our Department continued our major collaborative project The New Territories Outstanding Secondary School Business Students Award Scheme with the support of Rotary Club of New Territories, New Territories General Chamber of Commerce and Hong Kong Association for Business Education. The climax event of the project was the award ceremony held on 17 May evening in the Mira Hotel with Mrs. Fanny Law, the Head of the Chief Executive-elect s Office and former Secretary for Education, and Mr. Joseph Lee, Chairman of Youth Commission and Deputy Chairman of Vocational Training Council as our guests of honour. The ceremony, which was supported and coordinated by our department staff and students, was well attended by over 100 guests including student awardees and their parents, representatives from schools and parent-teacher associations, Rotary Club and New Territories General Chamber of Commerce members. On the other hand, the Department continued its support to accounting and business subject teaching in secondary schools and successfully conducted a seminar on Business, Accounting and Financial Studies (BAFS) examination review and experience sharing for 38 secondary school teachers from Tuen Mun and Yuen Long. Principal M. K. Tai, Chairman of Hong Kong Business Association and 2 other teacher speakers shared with participating teachers their views and experiences on the recent development of the examination and curriculum of the subject BAFS. Furthermore, we also had the pleasure of inviting Mr. Huen Wong, the past president of the Law Society of Hong Kong and honourary member of our Centre for Legal and Administrative Practices to conduct a talk on Legal Professional Ethics to our law students. In this summer, our students will participate in a number of overseas/cross border visit and student exchange and work attachment activities. Three students will travel to Singapore to take up a 2-month internship there with the support of the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore. Two students will attend a 5-day tour in Berlin under the Wofoo Leaders Network (WLN) Scheme and 22 students will join a 4-day exchange camp in Wuyi University in Jiangmen organized by our Student Development Office and 30 students will participate in a 5-day business enterprise and cultural visit tour to South Korea organized by the Department. Many students will also engage in summer internships. All these activities enable our students to widen their learning experience outside campus and to be well-prepared for their future work or further studies. Finally, I would express my sincere thanks to all our stakeholders including parents, employers, professionals and Rotary Club members who have offered their support during the current academic year to our students and staff. My special thanks are due to our Accountancy and Law Advisory Committee members, employers and Rotary Clubs who have offered so many valuable internships to our students which are critical to the success in their learning and vocational training. David Tam

Professional Linkage Distinguished Lecture on Legal Professional Ethics We were honoured to have Mr. Huen Wong, immediate past president of the Law Society of Hong Kong, as our guest lecturer to give a talk on Legal Professional Ethics to our full-time students of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies, part-time students of Professional Diploma for Legal Executives and alumni members of Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association on 5 May 2012. Mr. Wong highlighted the crucial importance of legal professional ethics in the legal profession and shared different cases he encountered with the students. The cases were very interesting and his delivery was so live and vivid that in an hour s talk, all the students were absorbed by his sharing. A number of controversial ethical issues were raised for discussion afterwards. The feedback from students was overwhelming, and they found the talk very useful, which enhanced their exposure in legal practice. The talk was followed by a tea reception, and the students and alumni members took the opportunity to chat and share among themselves. Edward Lo Mr. Huen Wong delivers the lecture to the students. Rotary International District 3010 Group Study Exchange Team Visit On 14 May 2012, 5 members of the Rotary International District 3010 Group Study Exchange Team from New Delhi, India visited our campus to gain an understanding of the vocational education and training in Hong Kong. We introduced them to the areas of work of Vocational Training Council and the courses and facilities offered in our teaching departments at Tuen Mun campus. The visit was completed with a tour to our departmental facilities in the campus. In their visit to our Department, they were interested in the setup and course materials used in our CLAP (Centre for Legal and Administrative Practices) and CAST (Centre for Accounting Services and Training). David Tam Mr. David Tam (right) and visitors in the CLAP. HDLAS Students Support in Community Service for the Old About 20 students of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies (HDLAS) participated in the community service 平安大行動 organized by the Hon Paul Tse Wai-chun. The purposes of the service are to help the old to prepare their wills and enhance the practicality of legal knowledge in the general public. The kick-off ceremony hosted by the Hon Paul Tse was held on 24 April 2012 at Kwun Tong MTR station. Through the community service, students learned how to launch a promotion campaign in real life and write a will for the old. Students found the event very meaningful. George Lam Group photo at the kick-off ceremony. Staff Development Departmental Retreat at the Lake Egret A departmental retreat was held in the morning of 22 June 2012 at the Lake Egret Nature Park. We invited Rose Yuen and Blanche Cheung from our Centre for Learning and Teaching to act as our facilitators for guiding colleagues on teaching and communication issues. The facilitators prepared an interesting video on various students learning styles and led us through different expectations between teachers and students, which were insightful. There were also games for ice-breaking and a SWOT analysis which helped enhance communication among colleagues and identified points we had no time to think of during our busy term time. Time was running short but it was well spent and fruitful. The retreat ended with very positive feedback and a delicious lunch in the park. Edward Lo BA (TM) staff at the Lake Egret Nature Park. 2

Linkage with Secondary Schools Teacher Seminar on BAFS Examination Review A Teacher Seminar on BAFS Examination Review for Tuen Mun and Yuen Long secondary schools was held in IVE (Tuen Mun) on 27 June 2012. Thirty-eight teachers participated in the event which started at 3:30 pm by a warm welcome delivered by Mr. David Tam, Head of our Department. The next session, BAFS Examination Review, was conducted by Mr. M. K. Tai, the principal of STFA Leung Kau Kui College, and Mr. Daniel Tsoi from Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School. All participating teachers were interested in the examination review session because the subject BAFS was examined for the first time in May 2012. The speakers delivered interesting points to our guest teachers who found the information useful and relevant to their future uses. After a short refreshment, Mr. Vincent Cheung, a BAFS teacher, was invited to have a sharing in his daily teaching experiences. Most guest teachers found his teaching experiences useful. The feedback from this sharing was overwhelming as guest teachers found the materials useful and practical. Moreover, it is expected that more similar events will be arranged in future to help guest teachers adapt to the new teaching requirement in BAFS. Tony Lim Guest teachers listen to the Examination Review Session attentively. The Saturday Afternoon Decorated with Insightful Presentations of Outstanding Secondary Students The final student interview of the New Territories Outstanding Secondary School Business Students Award Scheme 2011-12 was held on 25 February 2012 in IVE (Tuen Mun). The 15 finalists were selected from a total of 119 candidates nominated by the principals of 70 secondary schools, based on their interview performance in the Semi-final Selection, their write-up of a business topic and achievement records in the nomination forms. Parents, school representatives and guests attended the function and witnessed the interview process via video-conferencing. The finalists debated and shared insights on the theme "The 12th Five-Year Plan of the People's Republic of China". Their intuitive presentation highly impressed the panel judges, Professor Lau Pui King JP, National People s Congress Delegate, Miss Josephine Kea, Deputy Academic Director of BA Discipline, Dr. Wong Yau Kar JP, Honorary President of Chinese Manufacturers Association of H. K. and Mr. Peter Wong, Past District Governor of Rotary District 3450. The final results including the Champion, 1st and 2nd Runners-up, 12 Certificates of Merit and the Outstanding Performance Prizes in Leadership, Social Service and Talent [Art/Sport] were announced on 9 March 2012, whereas the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Award Scheme would be held in May in the Mira Hotel. Lisa Choi The organizing committee members and the finalists. The Grand Prize Presentation Ceremony Packed with Scholarly Pursuits The important episode for the awardees - the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the New Territories Outstanding Secondary School Business Students Award Scheme 2011-2012, for which IVE is one of the co-organizers, was successfully held on 17 May at the Mira Hotel. Mrs. Fanny Law GBS JP, Head of Office of the Chief Executive-elect, Mr. Joseph Lee, Deputy Chairman of the Vocational Training Council, and Ms. Mabel Chan, Deputy Secretary for Education, were the officiating guests who also presented prizes to the winning students. Through series of competitions and activities, the nominated students cultivated further interest in the business administration studies. The Chief Executive-elect, Mr. Leung Chun-ying, being the Chief Judge of the Award Scheme 2010-11, stated emphatically that the Scheme had nurtured business talent for Hong Kong. Mrs. Fanny Law encouraged young people to learn from the experience of the Chief Executive Elections by facing difficulties with determination and perseverance. Lisa Choi Mr. Joseph Lee presents the prize to the 1st runner-up of the Competition. Mrs. Fanny Law commends highly the performance of the winning students. 3

School Talk at CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School Students having completed 5-year studies in secondary schools are puzzling at their future paths. Two BA (TM) lecturers came to CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School on 14 March 2012 with 2 graduates from the school to conduct an experience sharing session. Around 120 S. 5 students attended the sharing. The two graduates, Chloe Chiu and Gowin Yau, started off by talking about the ways they had gone through after graduating from their Alma Mater. Chloe is currently a year 1 student of Higher Diploma in Accountancy. She is delighted with her campus life at IVE as she finds the knowledge learnt from the course is very interesting and useful. She can also participate actively in different student activities to gain valuable experience. Gowin is now working at a local bank where he is responsible for investment and insurance services. Their fellows were all attentive to their sharing as it provided insights about future development on study and career. The last part of the session was a brief introduction of vocational education and courses offered by IVE. The whole event ended with keen interaction and lots of fun. Tony Lim Two past graduates at the sharing session. Taster Programme for Secondary Schools BA (TM) organized a taster programme for students of secondary schools in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long on Monday, 5 March 2012. The event attracted 100 students from three secondary schools, namely, Bethel High School, TWGHS Sun Hoi Directors College and Ching Chung Hau Po Woon Secondary School. The seminar included 3 sections. Mr. Karlo Au, solicitor, was invited as the speaker of the first section to introduce the legal profession. After that, students of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies arranged some legal case activities to demonstrate the importance of legal knowledge to our daily life. The last section was conducted by Mr. Johnny Shu from BA Project Office to introduce business administration courses to the students. The seminar was very successful in arousing the students interest in law and we received good comment and positive feedback from the teachers and students of the secondary schools. Daisy Chan Mr. Karlo Au delivers his speech. Taster Programme at HKMA K S Lo College The Legal and Administrative Studies Course Team in BA (TM) was invited by HKMA K S Lo College at Tin Shui Wai to organize a taster programme to 160 S. 5 students at their campus on 23 February 2012. The programme was divided into two parts. The first part was a legal talk delivered by our lecturer Mr. Chan Kai Ho. The second part was legal video activities conducted by our year 3 students of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies (HDLAS). The activity was very successful for the secondary students to understand our legal course at BA (TM) and they also had a chance to know about the Rule of Law. Daisy Chan HDLAS students conduct the legal video activities. The Close Encounter with the Rotary Clubs Students of the Department have been engaged in industrial attachments offered by various Rotary Clubs in Hong Kong. In order to share with the secondary school students the benefits of workplace experience gained during schooling, the event was organized for 120 S. 5 and S. 6 students on 27 March 2012. Mr. Vincent Yip, President of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Sunrise was the prominent guest speaker, who was also a highly passionate employer providing attachment posts to students of the Department. Mimien Poon Shuk Chong shared her memorable experience as the Club Secretary of The Rotary Club of Tsuen Wan. The sharing of Eileen Hon Yin Ha was again fascinating, as she had worked for the Rotary Club of New Territories ever since she took up her studies in Tuen Mun two years ago. Both student speakers gained insight into the different work practices of the Rotary Club members, enabling them to enhance their leadership skills and confidence that were definitely valuable for future work and studies. It was no wonder that the event was well received with good feedback from the participants. Lisa Choi Mr. Vincent Yip (3rd from right, front), guests, staff and secondary students at the sharing. 4

Student Activities, Seminars and Visits NT Walk for Millions With the support of BA (TM), BA Society mobilized students to take part in the 2012 Community Chest NT Walk for Millions on Sunday, 19 February 2012. There were 39 students and colleagues participating in the event which took almost 3 hours to complete the 5.5-kilometre walk from Pak Shek Kok Promenade to Tai Po Waterfront Park. The participants raised $5,370 for the Community Chest. The walk was followed by a BBQ gathering at Tuen Mun Fu Tai BBQ Land. The students and teachers took the opportunity to share and play among themselves happily. Jack Yuen Ready to start! Seminar on Project Management The module Introductory Project Management of level 2 of Higher Diploma in Business Administration is a practical one that requires real-life case studies on top of classroom lectures. To achieve this aim, a seminar was organized on 11 May 2012 to demonstrate to students how project management is exercised under a real business setting. Mr. Timothy Lam, the guest speaker, is the Assistant Director of Finance of Hong Kong Baptist University, who has over 20 years experience in project management and contract administration in the public sector. His seminar covered the project of revitalizing a Grade 1 historical building Lui Seng Chun ( ), built in the 1930s, into a Chinese medicine clinic under the management of Hong Kong Baptist University. Students were amazed to see the revitalized product which is a perfect blend of both old features and new functions. Jonathan Tse Students are fully captured by the marvelous results of the revitalization project. Conveyancing Practice Training Sessions In this summer, students of our Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies will pursue their workplace attachments in law firms. In order to equip them with the necessary practical knowledge and to provide them with the guidance to the essential operational procedures involved, two identical conveyancing practice training sessions were organized for the students during the week of 25 June 2012. Each session covered two days during which our students took their roles as legal executives acting for vendors and purchasers respectively. Documents and agreements adapted from practising legal firms were used in the training, which would be particularly beneficial for the students for the attachments and further development. Herman Man Students are busy preparing legal documents. 5 LASAA Sharing Session for HDLAS Final Year Students 2012 Every year the IVE Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association (LASAA) organizes a sharing session for the graduates of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies (HDLAS) to share their experiences in work and further studies. This time five graduates, Ms. Keiko Yip, Mr. Arthur Yeung, Ms. Mindy Wong, Mr. Tiger Cheung and Ms. Koni Chan, who are now working in the Department of Justice and various law and business firms, came to meet the final year students on 7 March 2012. The event was conducted in an amicable atmosphere. The students found it very informative and useful for their future development. One of them even suggested the event could be organized more than once each year. Raymond Wong Teachers, alumni members (front) and the HDLAS final year students (back).

Trade Development Council (TDC) Student Ambassador Programme Ten students of Higher Diploma in Business Administration (HDBA) were selected to participate in the TDC Student Ambassador Programme during the Hong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair in May 2012 in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Student ambassadors were responsible for promoting the newly launched Exhibitor QR Code Scanning Service by TDC. Prior to the Fair, a half-day training was provided by TDC to equip students with the knowledge of the new app (application) and operations of the trade fair. Students performed various onsite deployments at the fair ground. To name a few, they had to proactively promote the new app to both the exhibitors and the global buyers in order to meet the daily quota; they had to conduct demonstration and surveys to collect feedback on the new app. During the de-briefing session, all students agreed that the activity was a fruitful experience. The programme enhanced their communication skills in different languages. They could practise good customer service when approaching overseas customers and exhibitors. In addition, they gained exposure to a world-class trade fair organized by TDC. Tammy Poon Students assist the buyer in downloading the application on his mobile device. Visit to the Land Registry A signification proportion of the graduates of our Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies have pursued their career in local law firms. Land search and registration issues are part of their routine duties. In order to enhance our students familiarity with and knowledge of the services of the Land Registry, we approached the Land Registry for a guided tour. As there were over 50 students, the Land Registry organized two identical sessions for the visitors in the afternoon of 23 March 2012. The staff members were very helpful in explaining the work procedures and requirements to our students and responding to their questions in details. Our students were encouraged to try the self-service terminals afterwards. The visit was ended with a Q&A session in their multi-function room.
