Sports Day Is Nearly Upon Us With Sports Day not far away, the whole school is fully in the swing of the Athletics season. All classes have been practising their Sports Day activities ready for the big occasion. All pupils are very excited about the possibility of winning races, the importance of everyone coming together to take part, working really hard for their House and having as much fun as possible. Sports Day for Reception to Year 6 will be held on Friday 10th June at Wodson Park. Details of the event have been released but please do ask the School Office if you require any further information. 2

Ex-Cricketer Paul Walker Coaches Upper School Hertfordshire county cricket coach Mr Paul Walker has been into Duncombe on several occasions this half term to teach pupils in Upper School and further develop pupils cricketing skills which are already being taught by Mr Sopher and Mr Le Tissier. Mr Walker coaches locally for Hertford Cricket Club as well as coaching for the County of Hertfordshire, and in the past for the County of Essex. Duncombe s Upper School pupils have been delighted to be taught by Paul as their skills have been developed in a variety of ways. Paul has had a lengthy cricket career and coaches cricket throughout the week in a variety of schools around Hertfordshire. 3

The Queen s Birthday Sports Afternoon All of Duncombe enjoyed the Queen's Birthday with a number of fun activities going on throughout the day including a variety of sporting activities during the afternoon. Year 6 led the main school with assistance from Miss Varney and Mr Sopher through the activities with great care and guidance. This was the last step for Duncombe's Year 6 to completing their 'Sports Leaders' award which they have worked hard towards since January. After pupils were put through their paces with activities such as the egg and spoon race and the pairs race, the afternoon of sporting fun finished with a 'royal' staff race where staff raced against each other to dress-up their Queen as quickly as possible. The pupils even managed to get a quick glance at the real Royal Family themselves! 4

House Cricket & House Rounders House Cricket got off to a flying start during the middle of May. Knebworth, Woburn and Hatfield all came out of the blocks as they attempted to bat for six. There is still one game remaining in this hotly contested competition. The final game is set for the beginning of June with Woburn currently in the lead, although this could all change as Hatfield are hot on Knebworth s tail. House Rounders was also competitively contested as all three houses attempted to round fourth base for victory. It was Knebworth that eventually managed to finish as victors, although Woburn were only just behind, eventually finishing second by half a rounder. Hatfield eventually finished in third place. 5

Essendon Country Club Tee Off Golf coaches from Essendon Country Club visited pupils in Upper School during April and May to teach a variety of golf techniques. The duo from Essendon led an assortment of activities that included driving, chipping and putting. Chris from Essendon Country Club said, I was really delighted at the level of ability shown by some of the pupils, despite some of them having never played golf before. We hope to see more of the golf duo in the near future. Unexpected Visitors F2 Athletics After-School Club began this term and is fully booked with exciting, energised and positive pupils who have so far covered a variety of track and field events. Some of those pupils were lucky enough to meet the football duo known as F2, during Athletics Club at the end of April, who are very well known for their football tricks and skills. F2 have a worldwide following on YouTube and regularly appear on television programmes, such as Sky Sports 1 s Soccer AM amongst many others. 6

s Personality This year... In every edition of you will find two candidates for the s Personality of the Year Award. Each half term two pupils will be carefully chosen, one from Lower School and one from Upper School, who have made a significant impact in Games and PE. At the end of the academic year one pupil will be chosen from ten candidates to be the overall s Personality of the Year Award Winner. Candidates so far Sofia S (Yr1), Leah B (Yr2), James W (Yr3), Matilda C (Yr3), Hagen W (Yr4), Luca T (Yr4), Louie C (Yr5) & Zoe D (Yr5). This half term We would like to congratulate the following final two pupils who have been picked as candidates for the s Personality of the Year Award. Lower School: Harry M (Year 1) Upper school: Ella M (Year 6) The attitude of both pupils has been of the very highest calibre throughout this academic year which has helped enable them to listen and learn very well within PE and Games lessons. Their work rate is also extremely pleasing, never stopping until they complete their goal or task. Well done to both. 7
