Chatham Primary School Newsletter Issue 40 13 December 2018 Be Safe Be Fair Be Kind Address: Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills 3127 Telephone: (03) 9830 1933 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Parent Helpers Morning Tea Monday 17 th December 10:45 11:30am in the Library Please join us at Parent Helpers Morning Tea next Monday. If you have helped in the classroom, on excursions, been a Parent Rep for your child s class, assisted with events or sporting teams, in the canteen, or in any other way throughout this year, then this morning tea is especially for you! There are so many ways in which parents help across a school year, I have only listed a few. This is one way we are show our thanks for all you have done to help us with daily happenings across the school year. We would enjoy seeing you there. We hope you are able to join in on Monday. Last Day of School/Assembly Our final day of school for this year is Friday 21 st December. On this day we will be having a special assembly to farewell our Year 6 students. Assembly will begin 12:15pm and school concludes at 1:30pm. Please note the early finishing time for the last day of school. Class Parties P-5: Tuesday 18 th November A reminder that all of our Prep-Year 5 Class Parties will be on this day. Please ensure your child has their drink bottle and a snack. Lunch will be a shared party lunch to celebrate 2018. Book Fair The Book Fair was a success. It was delightful seeing all the students browsing the books on Tuesday and getting ideas for summer reading. Thank you to all the parents who purchased books through the Fair; we sold over $2,000 worth of books and stationery and raised over $300 for the school library. Staffing for 2019 As mentioned in last week s newsletter, we have a number of our teaching team who have been on contracts for 2018. Therefore, some of our current team have been applying for teaching positions at other schools. Mrs Reynolds has successfully applied for a teaching position at another school. We congratulate Mrs Reynolds on her new role and wish her every happiness and success at her new school. Mrs Reynolds has enjoyed working in our Prep rooms this year and whilst sad to be leaving us, she is also looking forward to getting to know her new students and families.
2019 Fair - Saturday 2 nd March, 2019. It s getting closer! Did you know that the Fair will be held in the fifth week of school next year? Please ensure you have this date marked in your calendar and check flyers for further information on how you can join in the preparations for a successful fair. Happenings Around the School With the heat arriving, it is important for all students to have a refillable drink bottle with them daily. If you have a moment in the not too distant future, please pop in to have a look for lost items in our lost property. We currently have many jumpers sitting in the lost property from students who remove jumpers during the day. Many of these do not have readable names on them so are difficult for us to return. Hopefully you may be able to recognise some of the jumpers. Curriculum Days for 2019 First two days of school Tuesday 29 th /Wednesday 30 th January, 2019 Monday before Cup Day Monday 4 th November, 2019 One more day TBC in 2019 Finally, a mobile phone that was found at the front of the school has been turned in to the office. Unfortunately the phone is locked and we cannot charge it so we have no idea who it belongs to. If you lost your mobile phone please drop by the office to see if it is yours. Be Safe, Be Fair, Be Kind. Shirley Allison Are you a Telstra Employee? Telstra Kids is open again, and we are hoping to find some Telstra employees in our community who would be willing to register their interest for a $1,200 Telstra Kids cash grant on behalf of Chatham Primary School. Chatham was fortunate in late 2017 to secure a number of Telstra Kids grants thanks to three Chatham parents and the sister of another. These funds were put towards the purchase of the Digital Technologies resources now used on a regular basis in Chatham's new STEM room. (The successful applicants who applied on behalf of Chatham in the past 3 years are ineligible to apply for us again.) If you are a Telstra employee or know someone who is, please contact Shirley or parent Katie Barnett (kerbarnett@hotmail.com). Thank you, Katie

I am a local resident in Surrey Hills and I have started a community project to feed the needy in Surrey Hills. This can include young, old, homeless, couch surfers, young families, single parent families, people in financial difficulty and the list goes on. I believe from seeing first hand the begging outside Safeway in Balwyn and along Burke Rd in Camberwell that there is a need for this service. The new Coles and various other retailers are supporting this too by donating foodstuffs and money. The Surrey Hills Neighbourhood centre is supporting this initiative which commenced last Thursday. We are trialling it for 5 weeks up to Xmas. If people come, then it will run every Thursday next year. See flyer attached. I thank you in anticipation of your support Warm regards Vivien Bortot
