ActionLine...Your Board Meeting Update May 16, 2012 Staff assignments approved During a special called Board meeting on April 16, Aldine ISD trustees approved two staff assignments. The two individuals were introduced at the May 15 Board of Trustee s meeting. Maria Garcia was named principal of Bussey Elementary School after serving as principal at Sammons Elementary School. Garcia received her bachelor s degree in academic studies from Sam Houston State University in 1996 and her master s degree in administration from that same university in 2001. She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career as a second- and third-grade bilingual teacher at Johnson Elementary School in 1996. In 1998, she transferred to Carter Academy to teach secondgrade bilingual. She moved to Sammons Elementary School in 2000 to teach third-grade bilingual. In 2002, she became an assistant principal at Thompson Elementary School where she served until assuming her current assignment as principal of Sammons Elementary School in 2006. Garcia has spent all of her 16 years in education with Aldine ISD. Christina Gomez was named principal of Carroll Elementary School after serving as principal of Garcia-Leza EC/Pre-K Center. Gomez received her bachelor s degree in education from the University of Houston-University Park in 1986 and her master s degree in administration from Sam Houston State University in 1995. She is certified as a principal. She began her career in teaching as a second- and fifth-grade self-contained bilingual teacher at G.I. Sanchez Elementary School in Houston ISD in 1986. During her tenure there, she was named Bilingual Teacher of the Year. In 1991, she moved to Aldine ISD to teach first-grade self-contained bilingual at Johnson Elementary School. In 1994, she became the curriculum coordinator for elementary bilingual and ESL at the Resource Center. She transferred to an assistant principal s position at Carroll Academy (now Carroll Elementary School) in 1998. In 2000, she returned to the Resource Center to serve as the multilingual services program director. In 2007, she became an assistant principal at Stephens Elementary School where she remained until assuming her current assignment as principal at Garcia-Leza EC/Pre-K Center in 2009. Gomez has 26 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 21 of those years with Aldine ISD. The following staff assignment was approved by Aldine ISD Trustees at a special called meeting on May 1 and the individual was introduced at the May 15 Board meeting. Dana Stelly was named principal at Francis Elementary School after serving as principal at Smith Academy. Stelly received her bachelor s degree in elementary education from Louisiana State University in 1993 and her master s degree in educational
administration from Prairie View A&M University in 2003. She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career at Delcambre Elementary School in the Iberia Parish school system in New Iberia, LA in 1993. In 1997, she moved to the Houston area and joined the staff at Smith Academy as a fourth-grade teacher. She was Smith Academy s Teacher of the Year during the 1999-2000 school year. She was named the reading and writing skills/instructional specialist at that same campus in 2001. In 2004, she was named an assistant principal at Smith Academy and in 2008 assumed her current duties as the school s principal. Stelly has 19 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 15 of those years with Aldine ISD. Aldine ISD Trustees approved one staff assignment during the May 15 Board meeting. Tracy Mansfield was named program director of elementary and intermediate science after serving as the science skills specialist at Stehlik Intermediate School. Mansfield received her bachelor s degree in academic studies from Sam Houston State University in 1995 and her master s degree in educational administration from Prairie View A&M University in 2005. She meets district requirements for this position. She began her teaching career as a sixth-grade science and language arts teacher at Stehlik Intermediate School in 1995. In 2003, she moved into her present position as the science skills specialist at that same school. In addition to her skills specialist duties, she served as the campus testing coordinator between 2004 and 2006. Mansfield has spent all of her 17 years in education with Aldine ISD.
Employees recognized During the May 15 Trustees meeting, a number of Aldine ISD employees were recognized for the contributions they make to the district on a daily basis. Emitte Roque, executive director of buildings and properties, named Aldine Ninth Grade School as his department s Building of the Month. On hand to accept the award were head custodian Milagro Romero, custodian Malcolm Brown (who will become head custodian when Milagro retires at the end of the school year), and principal Walter Stewart. Roque named Eckert Intermediate School as his department s Yard of the Month. On hand to accept the award were head custodian Santana Salinas, yard man Jose Serrano and principal Todd Armelin. Roque named Vines EC/Pre-K Center as his department s Building of the Year. On hand to accept the award were head custodian Francisco Bernal, custodians Lidia Gonzalez, Maria Guadalupe Martinez and Elida Torres and principal Linda Reed. Roque named Escamilla Intermediate School as his department s Yard of the Year. On hand to accept the award were head custodian Maria Garcia, yard man Alton Honeycutt, custodian Alma Robicheaux, Maria s daughters Michelle Aguilar and Sandy Aguilar and principal Milo Ortiz.
principal is Marcus Pruitt. Dani Sheffield, executive director of child nutrition services, named the cafeteria staff at Aldine Middle School as her department s Team of the Month. The team consists of manager Danet Richardson and specialists Mary Armstrong, Nahla Baba, Nereida Lopez, Amanda Maya, Glenese McDaniel, Maria Rodriguez, Martha Sullivan and Nina Washington. The CN supervisor is Alisha Abbs and the school s Robin DeRouen, executive director of transportation, named Judith Ray as her department s Employee of the Month. Ray works at the east side transportation department as a special needs bus driver. Richard Delgado, director of athletics, recognized a number of employees who performed courageously during a crisis situation at the MacArthur High-Cinco Ranch softball playoff game on May 4. During the game, first base umpire Richard Searce collapsed at first base at approximately 7:30 p.m. MacArthur trainer Jennifer Chandler, a firefighter who was at the game and both team s coaches immediately responded. 911 was called and CPR was started on Mr. Searce. The AED (located at the softball field) was brought to the scene within two minutes per Chandler s request. An EMT unit arrived within five minutes and took over care of Mr. Searce. He was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital and was accompanied by MacArthur High head football coach Bernie Mulvaney. Mulvaney remained at the hospital until Mr. Searce s wife and family arrived. Unfortunately, Mr. Searce passed away. Sandra Mader, AISD s director of athletic services, remained at the field and updated Debbie Decker, Katy ISD s executive director of athletics, on what was happening. She also notified UIL about the situation and made plans to re-schedule the game for the following afternoon. Her calming influence played a key role in dealing with a very difficult situation for both teams and those in attendance. Decker sent Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg a very moving letter thanking AISD s employees for their exemplary actions during a very trying time. Other AISD employees who stepped forward to assist were Mark Hayes, administrative assistant of special events, MacArthur trainer Coby Harris and MacArthur volleyball coach Linda Eastland, as well as principal Nancy Blackwell and assistant principal Marguerita Guerra.
Grant announced Stacy Smith, program director of resource development, announced two grants during the May 15 Trustees meeting. Terrie Sanchez, principal of Dunn Elementary School, and teacher Rebecca Matuszewski secured a $3,125 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant to buy equipment for the school s jump rope team and its basketball performance team the Dunnk Club. Also on hand was Katie Barckoltz with DairyMax. Kathy Bacy, principal of Harris Academy, and Dixie Allen, the school s librarian, secured a $75,000 grant from the Houston A+ and the Leonore Annenberg Scholarship and School Funds to purchase classroom reading books and literacy-focused technology for Harris Academy students. The grants announced during the May 15 Board meeting totaled $78,125. Program presented Sara Ptomey, executive director of curriculum and instruction, presented the program during the May 15 Board meeting. She introduced students who attained accomplishments in visual arts, career and technical education and music during the 2011-12 school year. The students were introduced to the Board along with their parents and received certificates for their accomplishments.
