Honors Classes in High School? I was recommended by my teacher for honors level. I enjoy reading without being prompted. I am organized and seldom do homework at the last minute. I enjoy writing. Health/Freshmen Focus Transition into high school Emphasis on learning styles and study skills Enhancing research methodology, evaluating credible information, writing skills, and presentation methods Adolescent brain development Career exploration project Career interest survey Meets the Health requirement for graduation

Electives Specific details for courses are included in the Program of Studies

Seminar Can be taken once each semester for your four years of high school. Is graded on a P/F basis and will affect your GPA if you fail. Allows you time to get work done, study, make up missing work/tests, receive help if you are struggling in a class. We like to stress the importance of a seminar as a transition to high school. You do not need to take a seminar both semesters, you can choose to take one your 1st semester and then another elective for the 2nd That decision needs to be made NOW! IF YOU: Have a difficult time completing homework Would like additional time during school hours to complete assignments Struggle in a subject Worry about your transition to high school Feel you could benefit by taking a break from the rigor of 6 core courses Are involved in after school activities/sports/clubs THEN YOU SHOULD TAKE A SEMINAR

Signing Up for High School Classes Please refer to the Scheduling Course Selection sheet in your packet to see all course options available to freshmen students both required and elective. On the back of this paper is the Scheduling Worksheet you will complete to choose your electives and alternate courses that will be used to build your freshman schedule. You are required to complete the Scheduling Worksheet using these steps: 1. Circle your required course choice: (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language, Health) 2. Write in your elective choice(s) and list course code. Prioritize your choices! 3. Write in your alternate choices and list course code. Prioritize your choices!

Alternates You MUST choose a minimum of 4 alternate courses. Alternates are courses you would take that would be placed in your schedule ONLY IF there is a conflict with one of the electives you chose. When choosing alternates, be careful of the credit (.5 or 1.0) associated with these courses vs. your elective choice(s). Alternates ARE required and they are NOT factored into your 7 credits. You will not be able to change your mind in the fall. Make sure they are courses YOU (not your friends) are interested in taking.

Scheduling Process You must have the Scheduling Worksheet completed when you meet with your counselor the week of February 12th. She will be instructing/teaching you how to register for your courses using Skyward. **This is NOT the time to ask questions or figure out your schedule. You MUST have this done prior to meeting with your counselor. 1. 2. The core recommended courses will already be entered in Skyward by your teachers. You will be adding electives and alternates only. Once you have entered your requests and alternates in Skyward, your Schedule Request Form will be printed. You will take this form home to your parents for a parent signature. Your Schedule Request Form is due back to the middle school counseling office by March 8th with a parent signature.

Recommendations Teachers will be loading recommendations for each student s core classes in Skyward. (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language) You will be able to see the courses recommended for you when you meet with your counselor the week of February 12th.

Off Recommendation If you or your parent do not agree with a recommendation, a discussion between you, your teacher, and parent MUST take place. After you have talked with your teacher and parent, if you still want to take the course that was NOT recommended, you and your parent will complete an Off Recommendation Form. This form will be available when you meet with your middle school counselor OR may be picked up in the middle school counseling office. Parents and students must sign the form. You will return it with your signed printed Schedule Request Form to the counseling office by March 8th.

KAMSC / ATYP / Application Classes Please sign up for classes assuming that you will be attending PNHS all day. You must sign up for 7 credits offered at Portage Northern. Any classes which require an application (Yearbook, KAMSC, ATYP) are NOT included in the required 7 credits. If you are accepted into KAMSC, contact your high school counselor and your schedule will be changed at that time. If you are currently enrolled in ATYP, please note this on the signed Schedule Request Form that you will turn in on March 8th. See your middle school counselor for Yearbook applications or if you are interested in Student Senate.

Seminar and PE Classes that can be taken one or both semesters, such as Seminar and PE, are added to your requests as follows: Seminar Team Sports ABL Power Training Power Training Females Individual/ Dual Sports Want to take 1st semester only Z201 P022 P086 P071 P081 P032 Want to take 2nd semester only Z202 P023 P087 P072 P082 P033 Want to take it both semesters Z201 and Z202 P022 and P023 P086 and P087 P071 and P072 P081 and P082 P032 and P033 If you do not care in which semester the course is placed, you may add the other semester course code as one of your ALTERNATE choices.

Reminder Dates The week of February 12th you will be entering your requests in Skyward with the help of your middle school counselor. March 8th Schedule Request Forms (and Off Recommendation Forms if applicable) WITH PARENT SIGNATURES are due to the middle school counseling office.
