Honors Classes Faster pace and cover more material with greater depth than regular level classes Prepare students for Advanced Placement Courses as well as the rigor of college courses Receive a.025 bump to a student s G.P.A. each semester

What is the Advanced Placement Program? An international high school program sponsored by the College Board that provides motivated high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses in a high school setting. Students take AP Exams at the end of the course, measuring their mastery of college-level work The learning expectations for each AP class are created by a panel of experts and college-level educators in that field of study. All course syllabi must be audited by the College Board before earning the AP designation.

The AP Exam Administered on a nationally established schedule First two weeks of May Typically three hour exams that include a multiple choice section and either essays or written applications Measures reasoning skills and the ability to analyze facts and data, synthesize information, think critically about complex issues and negotiate competing perspectives

Grading Scale for AP Exams Each exam is graded using a 5 point scale 5 Extremely qualified 4 Well qualified 3 Qualified 2 Possibly qualified 1 Not qualified An AP grade of 3 or higher can qualify you for college credit or placement at most U.S. colleges and universities

Who designs the AP Course and Exams? AP committee members currently teach at several of the nation s top colleges and universities including: Princeton University Michigan State Univ. Univ. of Wisconsin Emory University Penn. State Univ. Arizona State Univ. Brown University UCLA University of VA Yale University Georgetown Univ. Cornell University Davidson College MIT

The AP Program at CHS Most advanced classes offered at CHS Provide students with the opportunity to experience college work while in high school. Give students the opportunity to learn valuable skills and study habits prior to college Exams are scored by experts in the field to verify mastery of college material in AP courses AP classes receive a 0.05 bump to a student s GPA each semester Cost - $95/exam, $145 for AP Seminar and AP Research

Universities that offer credit &/or placement for AP Seminar & Research LAST year s now they have a search engine! Higher Education Endorsement

Student perspective Student Perspective video This year s AP Seminar students are enjoying & have developed SKILLS, talk to them! Excited for next year AP Research project is integrated into the CHS Senior Project!

Benefits of AP Subjects are studied in greater depth Students will improve writing skills Students are required to think critically Students are prepared for the rigor of college work Strengthens college applications demonstrates academic rigor Earn college credit may save money AP students more likely to graduate from college in 4 years

Expected Four-Year Graduation Rate by AP Participation 54% 53% 59% 64% 69% 45% 47% AP Student Success at the College Level; Adapted from Mattern, Marini, and Shaw 2013

The College Admissions Perspective 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions. Colleges rank strength of curriculum and grades in collegeprep courses as the two top factors in the admission decision. (NACAC Admission Trend Survey 2017) AP courses show admission representatives that students are challenging themselves and preparing for the rigors of college

Further Admissions Perspective The AP test is a demonstration of proficiency and competence in a subject matter A score of 3 or above on an AP test indicates a good student who can handle college level work as well as demonstrates a high degree of mastery of the subject matter. AP courses allow colleges to evaluate a student s abilities and knowledge on a consistent standard the national exam Admissions officers are able to separate grades from proficiency since test scores provide external verification that the grades a student earns are an expression of content mastery.

Are more demanding AP classes Expect students to do more reading and writing Expect students to evaluate and critically analyze material

This means: Discussions are intense, probing and demanding Students are required to think for themselves, not give answers to please the teacher Homework involves independent thinking, expressing your ideas and analyzing what you read. The classes teach you to analyze, reason and understand

How successful are our students?

CHS AP Program

AP Credit Policy Each college and university has its own policies regarding AP credit and placement. The College Board offers information about AP credit at thousands of college and universities at www.collegeboard.org/apcreditpolicy.

AP Enrichment P/F class offered during the daily 55 min. period Allows support for students taking AP classes Opportunity for AP students to increase their success by providing time within the school day to work independently, study in small groups or receive help from AP instructors Students taking multiple AP classes and/or AP students involved in activities are encouraged to utilize this class

Rigor vs. Final GPA Colleges and universities are more interested in students who take a course load that has academic rigor than one that has a 4.0 GPA without any rigorous coursework Not only is rigor what the post-secondary schools are looking for, rigorous courses will help prepare a student for success at the college level.

What to consider when deciding to take AP Classes A willingness to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum Performance in prerequisite Honors classes/teacher recommendation A student s -interests -motivation -strengths and weaknesses -commitments

How to Register for an AP Class Talk to your counselor to be sure AP is the right placement for you. Discuss and get a recommendation from current teachers. When registering for classes get an AP Contract from your counselor. Read the contract carefully and return to the Counseling Office ASAP. Due by April 5 th. When contract is returned student will receive payment information all fees are due by August 28 th.

Be Informed We encourage you to do your own research on colleges and universities in which your child may be interested. Our goal: To make sure students are placed into courses best suited for their academic needs and to give parents/students the most accurate information possible to make informed decisions.
