College Chaplains Fr. Frank Buhagiar Fr. Shymon Thekkekalathungal Fr. Darien Sticklen Sisters of St Joseph Sr. Geraldine Whelan PRAYER Be eager in your desires but humbly patient in their accomplishment Mary MacKillop leaves Penola 1867 AMEN Canonical Administrators Fr. Frank Buhagiar (President) Fr Pius Kodakkathanath Fr. Jude Pirotta Volume 14, Issue 6 June, 2017 Letter from the Principal Dear Parents/Guardians In recent weeks many students have completed examinations including our Year 10 cohort, students completing Unit 1 and all students studying Unit 3 & 4 subjects who are required to undertake the General Achievement Test (GAT). Our students are to be congratulated on the manner with which they conducted themselves during these examinations. This intense period reminds all of our students of the need to be well prepared for examinations. I trust they will take the results as a means to review their progress and strategies in readiness for their end of year examinations. Subject selection for students from Year 8 11 will begin in early Term 3. This requires careful consideration by all students, in conjunction with their parents/guardians, to ensure that their chosen pathway caters for the needs and aspirations of each student. I recently attended the annual AJASS Conference held at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney. The theme for this year s conference was Creating Hope with a Josephite Heart and encompassed visits to the Tomb of Mary MacKillop, the Mary MacKillop Museum and Mary MacKillop College, Warnervale. An invitation is extended to all parents and guardians to attend the Open Board Meeting on Thursday 27 July to view the Board in operation. The Board serves the College tirelessly and we are very grateful for their expertise and efforts on behalf of the College. The meeting will commence at 7:30pm in the Sister Giovanni Administration Building. The College Musical Mary Poppins will open on Thursday 3 August. The multi award winning tale is based on PL Travers' tales of a magical nanny. Walt Disney s Mary Poppins was first launched as a movie in 1964, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and quickly became the crowning achievement in Walt Disney s career. The stage version played on the West End for over four years and on Broadway for over six years, with a total of more than 2600 performances. All families are encouraged to come along to enjoy the College s interpretation of Mary Poppins. - 2 -

With the semester drawing to a close and colder weather setting in, the mid-year break is a welcomed opportunity to rest and refocus in readiness for the commencement of second semester. I wish the College community a safe and happy holiday. May St Mary of the Cross MacKillop journey with us. Rory Kennedy Principal - 3 -

From the Director of Student Wellbeing Year 7 & 8 During June, the Year 7s have been busy both inside and outside their classrooms. Many students enjoyed participating in Premier League. Congratulations to all teams that participated in Finals. Students who studied Music in Semester 1 demonstrated their skills for their peers during Music recitals and students who studied Art in Semester 1 enjoyed the experience of visiting the National Gallery. The study of Ancient China in Humanities culminated in creating ancient artefacts. Students and teachers alike were impressed by the finished products displayed in our museums. We hope everyone enjoys their holidays. The Year 8 Lorne Camp program has started with most classes having completed their camp in the last five weeks of Term 2. The students experience a great deal on the camp and have many stories to tell on their return. Although challenged at times, the students accomplish a great deal. They pitch their tent, bush walk, prepare and cook their meals and participate in numerous camp activities, all of which are very rewarding. The remaining classes will attend their camps in Term 3. We wish all students and their families a restful holiday break. From the Director of Student Wellbeing Year 9 & 10 Congratulations to all our Year 9 and 10 students on a productive end to the semester. Aside from the completion of assessment tasks (and examinations for some), June has also been a time of reflection. In particular, on the Year 10 Wellbeing Day, our students had the opportunity to revisit relevant issues around cyber-safety and mental health. Vic Roads were also in attendance to deliver their presentation on driver safety, more widely known as Keys Please. Likewise, our Year 9 students participated in a successful Transition Day whereby all students reflected on the semester just past and considered future possibilities for the campus they will attend in Semester 2. We congratulate a number of our Year 9 and 10 students on receiving academic awards at the whole school assembly held on 21 June. These awards recognise academic achievement, commitment to studies and a positive attitude. We are very proud of their achievements. We thank the Year 9 and 10 subject teachers for encouraging all their students to strive higher. We also thank all parents/guardians for the tremendous support they have provided their children, our students, this semester. - 4 -

From the Director of Student Wellbeing Year 11 & 12 All Year 11 and 12 students are now in full swing of Semester 2 following the completion of their exams and the GAT. During this exam period, the VCAL students completed a work placement which is a vital part of their program. Reports from both students and teachers were really positive and we hope the connections developed through this placement may lead to future career opportunities. The end of term and the midyear holidays are a good opportunity for all students to take stock and reset for the rest of the year. Students are far closer to the end of the year than the start and need to plan and prepare for their final exams. To support parents/guardians and students with this preparation, we will run a number of programs for students completing VCE from Year 10 to 12. In August, we will conduct an information evening looking at the power and importance of sleep. In late Term 3, we will hold a session for students called finishing line. This will assist students to prepare for their exams. Please look out for these program dates. We hope all students have a good break and recharge their batteries for Terms 3 and 4. Sports Report For all recent sports results, please refer to the MacKillop News Blog found on the College Website. John the Baptist Resource Centre The challenge for Year 7 students to read from the set genres of Fantasy, Mystery and Relationships comes to an end as the month of June closes. This will have taken many students from their comfort zone. They are further encouraged to continue their reading habits over the holidays by extending into genres that they normally don t read. To accommodate this continued reading, the library urges all students to check the due date of current borrowings and ensure they have reading material for the holiday break. For students registered in the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge, the holiday break becomes a perfect opportunity to continue completing the challenges quota of reading titles. Please remember to verify the titles, information for which can be obtained from the library catalogue on the library intranet page. - 5 -

Parents & Friends Association Following our High Tea fundraising event last May, we are now focussing our efforts towards the Chocolate Drive to be held in the first week of August. As always, there are great prizes available to encourage the sale of the chocolates and the return of the money before the due date. The funds raised from this Drive assist us in contributing towards additional resources for our children. We ask that all parents/guardians return the slip from the Chocolate Drive letter to confirm their participation in this fundraiser or opt to make a donation. We also encourage you to make payments electronically through the website as it is an easier and more secure form of payment. Due to the school holidays, the next meeting of the Parents & Friends Committee will be held on Wednesday 2 August at 7:00pm in the Sr Giovanni Administration Building. All are welcome to attend.
