Part B 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution: a) A number of staff and students actively participated and presented papers at Conferences and Seminars. Mr.Thiyagarajan and Mrs.Saranya Devi presented papers. Mr.Thiyagaraja, Mrs.Asheeba and Dr.Moorthi published papers in research journals. Microbiology student Ms.Divya and Biochemistry students Ms.Anjana, Mr.Gopinath and Ms.Varshini presented papers and posters in Conferences and Seminars. b) State Level Symposium and Awareness programme on the current scenario of Drug De-addiction and HIV / AIDS prevention and strategies organized by Department of Microbiology and Red Ribbon Club. c) National Conference on Enhancing Skills by Department of Commerce d) Food Festival by Department of Hotel Management - 1 -

e) Mrs.S.T.Asheeba of Biochemistry Department attended a 2 day National Seminar on Recent Trends in Environmental Toxicology f) Mrs.S.T.Asheeba and Ms.Sonia of Biochemistry Department attended a 2 day Seminar on Recent Biotechnological perspectives in Disease diagnosis & Therapy g) Ms.Sonia attended a one day seminar on Emerging Trends in Complementary Medicine h) Dr.S.Thiyagarajan & Dr.M.Alagusundaram of Dept. of Microbiology attended a CME Programme organized by King Institute and SRM University on 21 st & 22 nd September 2010 at Chennai. i) Mrs.J.Saraniya Devi & Mrs.S.Divya of Microbiology Department attended a Faculty Training Programme on Bioinformatics of Microbial Diversity organised by Bioinformatics Facility Centre (BIFC), Presidency College sponsored by DBT from 3/2/2011 to 5/2/2011. j) Dr.I.Arulpandi, Asst.Professor of Microbiology Department attended a Training Programme on Deciphering the Tools of Bioinformatics organized at Sai Institute of Biosciences Research, Mehta Nagar, Chennai, from 15/2/2011 to 17/2/2011. 2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG) U.G I Shift : B.A English II Shift: B.Com (Accounting & Finance) B.Sc.Visual Communication 3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction As the College is affiliated to the University of Madras, Curricular Design and its implementation are done at the University level. However, Senior Faculty are members of the Board of Studies in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Hotel Management Departments. They contribute to curricular change. 4. Inter disciplinary programmes started : As an affiliated Institution, choices of Inter-disciplinary programmes are limited, eventhough the Semester system offered comes under the Choice Based Credit System. Due to physical constraints, the Departments choose/opt for a particular subject for all the students. However, under the compulsory Soft Skills Paper, the following options are given: * Computing skills - 2 -

* French * Personality Development * Presentation Skills 5. Examination reforms implemented The University of Madras conducts Examinations in November & May annually. The College organizes: * Unit Tests are conducted every month and marks are sent home * Model Exams are conducted before the University Examinations 6. Conference on Enhancing Skills Synergia-2011 on 2-3 rd February 2011. The conference was inaugurated by Sri.Krishnaswamy, Vice President, Tata Consultancy Service, Chennai. Around 150 participants from 15 colleges in and around Chennai participated. An edited book entitled Enhancing Managerial Skills was released on the occasion. 5 B.B.A The BBA Department organized a Mega Intercollegiate Meet Enthuzaa-2011 on 22 February 2011. Shri.S.P.Mathur, IPS, DGP (Retd) Chennai presided over the Inaugural function Actress Devayani was the celebrity guest for the valedictory function. 6 B.Sc.Viscom The Visual Communication Department conducted 5 th Asan Video Awards a National Level Video Festival on 28 th February 2011. National Level Competitions for the Best Short Film, Documentary and Ad Film were conducted. 9. Research projects S.NO. Financial aid to students The College offers 10% Concession in tuition fee for meritorious students. SC/ST students are encouraged and helped to apply for and get scholarships. Five free seats were given to economically weak students. 30. Support from Alumni Association and its activities: Alumni Association is gradually gaining strength. Many are well placed and evince keen interest in maintaining ties with the Alma mater. Once a year on a Saturday or Sunday the Alumni meeting is arranged. There is reunion and sharing of experiences. Their activities included giving a training session on interview skills for Final year students, arranging Vivekananda Day in the campus and sponsoring some of the academic events. 31. Support from Parent Teachers Association and its activities: The parents are informed of the progress of their wards regularly. Once in a semester, there is a meeting and suggestions of the parents are discussed and implemented. 32. Health Services: There is a male physician for the boys and a lady doctor for girls. They come for medical inspection and visit the College regularly. - 8 -

33. Performance in sports activities Students take active interest in sports a) College Men s Team of Handball and Football were qualified for the Semi-finals of the University b) Women s Table Tennis Team qualified for Quarterfinals of the University c) Our students represented the University Inter-zone Handball and Football Tournaments d) The College hosted the Asan Memorial Intercollegiate Volleyball Tournament e) Dinesh (I B.Com) got the III Prize in the Tamilnadu State Strength Lifting Competition 34. Incentives to outstanding sportsperson: Students are awarded prizes, cash incentives, special coaching, attendance concession, etc. 35. Students achievements and awards: a) University results/ranks are yet to be announced b) The students participated in various events and brought laurels: Ms.K.Divya of II M.Sc. Microbiology presented a research paper in the International Conference organised by Assumption College at Chengenessery, Kerala. At the National Conference organised by the Biotechnology Department of Bharathidasan University, eight students of the Department presented papers and Ms.K.Divya won the I Prize for poster presentation. Ms.Anjana and Mr.Gopinath of II year M.Sc.Biochemistry won the I Prize & III Prize for Poster Presentation at Sri.Sankara College Ms.Varshini presented papers at Ethiraj College, Devanai Ammal College and Thiyagaraya College, Chennai. Ms.Jenifer (M.Phil -Bio) presented a research paper at International Chemical Conference, Calcutta on 14 th November 2010. Mr.Mukesh Kumar and Mr.Balaji of II year B.Sc.Computer Science won III Prize in Debugging Competition and Mr.Sidharth Mathew and - 9 -

Mr.Sathish Kumar won II prize in Quiz Competition at Vel s University, Chennai. Mr.Raja of III year B.Sc.Computer Science was adjudged the National Level Best Instructor and Fighter in Kung Fu. Final year Hotel Management students Mr.Sarath Krishnan and Mr.Logesh won the II place in Vegetable Carving and Mr.Vishnu won the II prize in Bartending at the National Level Competition organised by Oriental College, Wayanad, Kerala. Mr.Vijay Kumar, II year Comp. Sc was selected in the Creative Talent Search test conducted by Image Infortainment Ltd., and won a scholarship. Mr.Vishnu Sharma, II year Viscom, won the II prize in the State Level Photography Competition held at Ethiraj College. Sree Arthi of I year won the I prize in photography competition at the French Department, University of Madras. Mr.Arunavade of III BBA won II prize in Ship Wreck in an intercollegiate meet at MCC. Ammu Therasa of III year BBA won the Kilimozhi Sammanam in the Malayalam Essay Competition conducted by the Asan Memorial Association. Final year B.Com students won the I prize in Stock War Competition in INSIGNIA-10 conducted by MCC Tambaram In the Intercollegiate Competition held at S.S Jain College, our students won I prize both in solo dance and fuel-less cooking and II prize in Group Dance. In Priyadarshini 10 conducted at Kilpauk Medical College, Rohan, II year Viscom, won the II place in Western Music. 36. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling cell Under the Tutorial System, each teaching staff is allotted 30 35 students. Teachers meet their wards regularly and offer guidance and counselling. - 10 -

37. Placements services provided to the students: There is a general placement cell in the College. In addition there are also separate Placement Cells in Hotel & Catering Management Department, MBA & MCA and Microbiology and Biochemistry Departments.
