Working together to shape our next Girlguiding strategy Hello! As part of the work to develop our new Girlguiding strategy for 2020 and beyond we re looking into several areas of interest identified by the Girlguiding board of trustees. One of these areas is the way in which our organisation is structured and how effectively this supports us to deliver our mission to empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure. Alongside this we re also looking at the current governance of our organisation; where decisions are made about how we should go about achieving our mission, and where accountability lies for our activities. The activities in this pack are designed to be used with groups of volunteers and staff throughout the UK. We want to gain a wide range of perspectives from all the varied experiences of everyone involved in making guiding happen for girls and young women. Why not use one or more of the activities at upcoming meetings or events where groups of volunteers and/or staff are gathering together? Each activity contains everything you need to do it and where to send any feedback after the activity, so that we can review what your group of volunteers or staff thinks. The feedback from these activities will help us develop the right strategy to take Girlguiding forward. I hope they ll be an enjoyable and thought-provoking way to reflect on our experiences now and our hopes for the future. What to do 1. Get into pairs and find a space. Each of you needs a pen and a piece of paper. 2. Start by reflecting together on how you spend your time. Do you have lots of free time? Or are all your days jam-packed, with not enough hours to do everything? Think about your whole life, not just the time you give to guiding, including things like looking after family, working, socialising etc. and make a list on your paper. 3. What percentage of your time in an average week do you spend on each task? Keep count for each other to make sure the total adds up to one hundred and add this to your list. 4. On the other side of your paper, draw a line down the centre to divide it in two. On the left-hand side of the page draw a circle and divide it into segments for each of the things you spend your time on in a usual week. Write the percentage of time you spend on each inside each segment. 5. Now think just about the time you spend on doing things for Girlguiding. What things do you do and what percentage of your guiding time does each take up? 6. On the right-hand side of the page draw another circle and this time divide it into segments representing your guiding time. Again, write the percentage of your time you spend on each activity inside the segments. 7. Finally, as a group, lay all your pictures down on a table or the floor and look at how the pictures compare. Are there any common themes you can identify? 4

Our Mission Through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure we empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. What to do 1. Get into groups of two or three and find a space. Each group needs a pen and a copy of the activity sheet. 2. For each task listed on the activity sheet your group needs to assign one group of people involved in guiding to the following roles: Decision maker decides what should be done Doer does the bulk of the activity related to this task Liable responsible for ensuring the task is done 3. First think about which group should make decisions about what needs to be done. You can only assign one group for each task. 4. Put the number corresponding to the group you chose in the Decision maker column next to the task. TOP TIP It doesn t matter if you don t know who currently makes the decisions, your group should only consider the ideal world scenario. 5. Now go through and assign one group who should take the action needed for each task. 6. Put the number corresponding to the group you chose in the Doer column next to the task. 7. And finally, decide where accountability for these actions should sit and assign it to one group. 7

Note to facilitator Assign a different coloured counter (or alternative items) to each of the four categories listed below. At the end of the activity, write up a list of the four categories and the tasks the group put in them, highlighting those chosen as the top ten in order. Then send all this information by Thursday 31 January 2019 to Strategy2020@girlguiding.org.uk Before you start Split the counters (or alternative items) into a bowl for each group, making sure there are equal numbers and mixed colours in each. How do you want to spend the time you give to guiding? Let s have some fun coming up with ideas to help the Strategy 2020+ project team reflect on how we can support everyone to enjoy their roles more. TOP TIP It doesn t matter if you don t know whether it would be possible to make the changes you want to see you can talk about that later. What to do 1. Get into groups of three or four. 2. Take a bowl full of counters and an empty bowl for your group, and a pen and paper for each participant. 3. As a group, form a circle with the two bowls in the middle. Everyone take a counter. Your facilitator will tell you which category each colour represents. 11
Categories Colour one: Take it off my hands please Colour two: This is mine, all mine! Colour three: Make it easier for me Colour four: Why am I doing this again? 4. Look at the colour of the counter you ve picked up. Which category does it match? Tear off a small piece of paper and write the colour and a task you currently do in your role matching that category. Fold it up and put it in the empty bowl. 5. Keep repeating this as a group until you run out of counters. 6. Once all the counters have gone, get back together as a whole group and put all the pieces of paper into one bowl. Taking it in turns, you ve got three minutes as a group to take pieces of paper out of the bowl and mime the ideas (like charades) to the rest of the group, as quickly as you can. Remember you can t speak! If the idea s already been mimed, pick another. How many can you get in before time runs out? TOP TIP If there are still lots of tasks left, why not play another round? 7. Now, open all the pieces of paper and separate them into the four categories. Vote on the top ten most important things you ve shared that the Strategy 2020+ project team should know. Flash fiction is incredibly short fictional writing. Forms of flash fiction include the six-word story, 140-character stories and the drabble (100 words). This activity uses the concept to share factual experiences instead What to do 1. With everyone sitting together, your facilitator will read out the following six-word story: Adventure? Nice idea. Where to start? Discuss the story together: What do you think it means or implies? Does everyone agree on its meaning? 2. Get into pairs and find a space. Every pair needs a piece of paper and a pen. 3. With your partner think of a barrier you each face in your role with Girlguiding. It could be anything there s no wrong answer but you should be able to share a story with your partner about the cause of the barrier and the impact too. 4. Together, figure out how to condense each of your stories into a single sentence. Your sentence should describe the barrier, its cause and the impact on girls. 5. Now, condense the stories even further, into just six words. You probably won t have enough words to express everything, so think creatively about how to convey as much meaning as possible. 6. Come back together as a group and take turns reading out your six-word stories. Can anyone identify the barriers they re inspired by? If nobody guesses correctly from your six-word story, read out your sentence story. And if they still can t figure it out tell them the full version! Now you ve tried condensing stories about the barriers you experience, come up with a six-word story about the barriers you might face to delivering our mission to girls if you were in one of the following roles: Unit leader District commissioner Division commissioner County commissioner County staff member Country or region chief commissioner Country or region staff member Lead volunteer Girlguiding UK staff member 14

Imagine a wealthy benefactor has given a large sum of money to a group of people to set up an organisation for girls and young women aged 5-18. The brief It should enable as many girls and young women to be involved as possible. The organisation will need to pay for itself somehow and manage its own funds. You ll need to make sure you can comply with the law and keep anyone involved safe. Everyone involved in the organisation should feel happy, supported and valued. The most innovative organisations will be chosen as winners. What to do 1. Get into groups of two or three and take a sheet of A3 paper and a pen. 2. You ve got 15 minutes to talk about ideas for your organisation. Try not to stray into thinking about what the experiences you offer girls would be. Focus on how you will structure the organisation, how will decisions be made and how you ll manage the logistics of delivering experiences to girls. Divide your paper into four and use the sections to brainstorm the points below: Who could be involved in running your organisation. What things would need to be done. Possible forms the organisation could take. What will make different people feel happy, supported and valued. 3. Taking your ideas, draw out a map of your organisation. Include the connections between people and as much detail as you can about how it would all work. 17
4. Now it s time to create a proposal you can put forward to the investor. It should include a short presentation where you explain the organisation, as well as talking through all the elements of your map. It should clearly explain how your organisation meets all the points in the brief. You ve got 10 minutes to practise your presentation. 5. Take turns presenting your plans to the rest of the group, who ll play the role of the wealthy benefactor. 6. When you ve all presented, lay your maps out on a table or the floor. Everyone can now use a sticker to vote for the organisation they think is the most innovative and unique, and best meets the brief. Your facilitator with count the stickers and announce the gold, silver and bronze winning designs! 7.
