November 2018 Newsletter Washington Township Middle/High School Letter from the Principal Believe it or not, it s time to start planning for the 2019-2020 school year! This week, students grades 8 through 11 will have the opportunity to attend our 2 nd annual Course Offerings Fair during SRT. Also this week, we will have our 1 st annual High School Parent/Student Night beginning at 6pm Tuesday evening. The meeting is specifically for students in grades 9-11. Before students are asked to make their course selections for next year, we want everyone to be aware of the tremendous opportunities available. We hope that the information shared at this meeting will be helpful as you plan for the rest of high school and beyond. Encourage your student. We have only 3 weeks left in the grading period. The last week will be busy with projects, exam preparation and exams. Please remember that no family vacations will be approved during the last 2 weeks of a semester. Planned absence forms are available in the school office. December Important Dates 4th 9th - 11th Grade Parents/Students Scheduling Information Night 8 th - Winter Bazaar (H.S. Choir) 13th - Elem. Winter Program 17th - MS/HS Choir/Band Concert 21st Last Day before Christmas Break Enjoy this very special time of the year. We all hope your holidays are filled with wonder, fun, gratitude, peace and joy! Merry Christmas from all of us!

Chromebook Damage We have seen an increase in chromebook damage each year which is somewhat to be expected as our students are using them more and more. However, we need to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to help keep them working in the best working order. One of our biggest issues is broken screens from things being placed in the case with the chromebook such as ear buds or writing utensils. Remember that regardless of the situation, each child is responsible for their chromebook. If it is damaged the technology department will fix it at the cost of parts. We do not make money off of the chromebooks. Please encourage your students to take care of their chromebooks.

6th Grade Spaghetti Dinner Thank you to everyone who supported the 6th Grade Spaghetti Dinner. The 6th graders exceeded their goal and will be going to Camp Tecumseh in May.

8th Grade Field Trip On Monday, November 12, the 8th graders went to hear Holocaust survivor, Eva Mozes Kor, speak at the Valparaiso Nazarene Church. She spoke about her experience surviving the Holocaust and about her message of forgiveness. Thank you to the Tri Kappa Sorority for sponsoring the event.

SWAT Field Trip Members of the SWAT (Students Working to Advance Technology) Team went on a field trip to Concord Junior High School to attend a Hoosier Students as Digital Leaders Conference. They attended 4 different sessions and learned about things like WeVideo and Maker Space.

Drone Race On Saturday, November 17, the East Porter County SWAT Teams held their first drone race. After assembling a course, students competed in flying drones through the course. Congratulations to Walker Roberts for winning the first race.

DECA November was DECA Month. Thank you to everyone who helped support DECA this month. Our Five Guys fundraiser was a huge success. The funds will help reduce the cost to attend our state conference in March. DECA's pajama day helped raise fund for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We raised nearly $70 for this worthy cause. Thank you to all who participated. DECA is looking for people to volunteer to judge at our district 1 competition. It will be held on Saturday, January 12th from 9am until 2pm. If you are able to help out, please contact Julie Moore ( julie.moore@eastporter.k12.in.us ) for more details.

Washington Township DECA would like to invite you to support Indiana DECA by donating $13 and becoming either a professional or alumni member. When Indiana DECA increases membership, more students are able to attend the yearly International Career Development Conference. Go to https://goo.gl/5lqjxa or use the QR code! Contact Mrs. Moore for more information ( julie.moore@eastporter.k12.in.us ). Please help Indiana DECA by pledging not to text and drive by participating in the It Can Wait campaign. No text message is worth a life. Don't be a victim of distracted driving.

DECA did a collection for MDA during the Girls' Basketball game on Tuesday, November, 20. We collected $69.14. We appreciate the support the community gave for this worthy cause.

Band and Choir The month of November had many notable music events for the band and choir department. The month started out the the choir participating in the premier of Johan De Meir's "Symphony #5: Return to Middle Earth". This performance was at the Valparaiso University Chapel and featured a mass choir including Washington Township. In early November we also had our annual talent show. This was a huge success featuring many of our talented WTS students. We also had the first performance of the newly formed WTS Jazz Band. This month we also had All District (High School) and All Region (Middle School) honor bands. Overall WTS had seven students selected to represent our school in band. On November 21st the Washington Township and Kouts Pep Bands filled in for the Valparaiso University Pep Band.

Econ Field Trip Mr. Simm's Econ class went on a field trip to Chicago. Students visited the Federal Reserve and Christkindlemarket.

Winter Market

You Rock Tamika Wilcox was a guest speaker in Mr. Hutson's Earth and Space Science classes. Tamika showcased her mineral and rock collection to students.

Textbook Parents, At this time all outstanding textbook rental is now past due. Please check your child's account on Skyward even if you paid in full at the beginning of the school year. If your child has had a schedule change, this can affect their total due. Also, all Athletic Transportation fees for Winter sports have previously been added. The Spring sports will be added when teams are established and rosters are received in my office. This once-per-year $15 fee must be paid by all athletes to help support athletic transportation costs. Parents of Seniors, all outstanding debts must be paid in full in order for your child to participate in graduation activities. If you are unable to pay in full by the end of December, contact me as soon as possible to request a Payment Agreement form. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you, Tammy Goodwin, ECA Treasurer
