5th Grade November Newsletter Upcoming Dates: November 9: Red, White and Blue Day -5th Grade Veterans Concert 2pm (Parents invited) 14: Wear Blue for Diabetes Awareness 21-25 Thanksgiving Break 30 - MeadowMart Shopping Day December 4: Biztown Day Conferences: Conferences were a great opportunity to connect with all of you and we appreciate your participation. We hope you had a chance to see the academic progress that you child is making in school this year. The best way to keep on top of what is happening in the classroom is to talk with your child and look at their work. Discuss what they are reading. Have them show you the math problems they are working on. Ask about the Biztown unit. The more they know you care about what they are learning, the more successful your child will be. Please continue to monitor the work at home: 1. Check on your child s homework each night and continue to sign their assignment notebook. They need their assignment notebooks signed each night, ideally it is signed after they have also shown you their work. Please check on the overall quality of this work. If you can t read it (poor handwriting) please remind them that I can t either. Have them fix it before they get to school and they will have more success in school. 2. Nightly reading is a part of the regular homework. We are beginning a NON FICTION unit on Inquiry right now. The kids are exploring topics of interest in the non fiction online sites. We are leading up to the first of two non fiction projects that students will be working on and presenting to others. 3. Please use the 5th Grade website to check on larger projects and daily homework if their notebooks are not filled in completely. Here is the link to the 5th Grade Daily Homework site.

Current and Upcoming Units of Study: Upcoming Reading Club Project: The Basket of Facts Project will be our Inquiry project this month. This is a favorite project every year because the kids decide what they want to learn about. They explore and decide on what is most important and meaningful. They can be creative as well in the creation of the basket to present their facts. The figurative basket is simply a way to present information. The student will see examples to help everyone understand that they can be creative in how they present their information. Writing: We just completed our first essay writing assignment where they had to create a product video. We worked with our MeadowMart business partner company, HDI to create videos of some of their toys that they sell to the US Marine Foundation Toys for Tots program. HDI and MeadowMart sell these products, but the Marines who oversee the distributions all over the country have to first purchase the products from their vendors. These young Marines have orders to follow and toys to purchase and they need guidance from knowledgable kids. Our videos will be featured on the HDI website and in email blasts to the Marine bases. Last years videos resulted in total sell outs of the products that were featured. HDI supports MeadowMart by matching their contributions to local charities, discounting and donating products to sell in our store and mentoring our staff members in entreprenurial practices. This year we will be continuing MeadowMart. MeadowMart is a store at our school to teach 5th graders business skills. Students were offered the opportunity to

apply for a staff position. We have 14 students serving on our staff this semester. The staff has learned a lot about sourcing products, wholesale vs retail pricing strategies, marketing, financing terms and merchandising strategies. The skills of operating a store are countless!! This week the staff is evaluating and analyzing the first sale results. What products sold, which ones didn't, What new products do we want to consider? What were the survey results that the customers suggested? There is so much quality learning happening. Talk about your real world applications. We are so excited!! Our MeadowMart employees have been working very hard to get ready for the second sale. Our next sale will be on Friday, November 30th. If your child is interested in buying any of the products, please fill out the monthly order form with your child. Send the money with your child to school on the sale date MeadowMart does not accept credit cards but checks may be made out to Meadowbrook Elementary. Here are links to the product videos that the 5th Grade students created in Writing class. These videos were recently presented to the School Board's Teaching and Learning Committee as examples of how technology has changed their learning opportunities. Each month MeadowMart will make a donation to a charity, last month MeadowMart donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. Ipad Reminders This is a reminder to all parents and students about ipad use. ipads should only be used for education only. Remember it's the school s property, not theirs. It needs to be at school, charged fully each day. We are limited when students do not have a charged ipad and need to access certain apps. Many students are choosing to add their own keyboard to their cases or buying keyboards integrated into a case. That is great and can help them build their keyboarding skills. Please ensure they are durable as well. Social Studies We have an upcoming trip to Biztown on December 4th. This is a great opportunity for students to be an adult for the day, have a job, and spend earned

money. I will be sending home a note asking for volunteers. If you are interested, you will have to get to get to the Junior Achievement building an hour before we arrive to do a little training. Math In math class, the students are finishing up our second unit which was about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. Our test will be this Friday. Our next unit, which we will be starting next week, will be about: 1) Evaluating (solve) numerical expressions with parentheses, brackets, and braces. 2) Writing numerical expressions with parentheses, brackets and braces. 3) Interpreting numerical expressions without evaluation. Our third unit will only be about 2 weeks. Math Club!!! Who? Anyone who wants to join. If you are struggling, come get a little extra help. If you re doing great, come share some of your knowledge with your fellow peers. What? We ll go over any math concepts you want. We can go over things we ve already learned, things we re talking about in class right now, or even get a sneak peek of some of the stuff we ll learn in the close future. Where? Mr. C s classroom When? Thursdays from 3:40-4:05 5th Grade Behavior Plan 1st step: Discuss the problem with student to end or change behavior 2nd step: Take a break in the hallway and have discussion with teacher regarding the problem 3rd step: Contact parents to discuss problem and possible solutions 4th step: Conference with parents in person Severe Infractions Contact Principal for meeting We also award Dollos for completing assignment notebooks each day, working effectively in classes, showing leadership and positive behaviors at school. Dollos are our class currency and can be spent at special events each trimester. NED awards can also be given in 5th grade.
