Monitoring Ireland s Skills Supply June 2015 Joan McNaboe/Nora Condon Skills and Labour Market Research Unit 1
Aim To examine trends in education/training outputs and labour market status by field of education 2
Skills Profile of the Population by Level, Field and Employment Status CSO (QNHS) 3
Population change Population by age group (0-64), quarter 4 2009 and quarter 4 2014 450,000 400,000 350,000 300,000 250,000 200,000 150,000 100,000 50,000-0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 Source: SLMRU (SOLAS) analysis of CSO data 2009 2014 Drop in the number of 20-29 year olds in the population (-26%, or 200,000 fewer persons); due to a fall in the number of births in the 1990s, although outward migration is also a factor 4
Shift in education profile towards higher educational attainment Highest level of education attained by age group (20-64 years); q4 2009 & q4 2014 500000 400000 300000 200000 100000 0 20-29 30-39 40-49 50-64 Upper sec or less (NFQ 1-5) 2009 Upper sec or less (NFQ 1-5) 2014 Post-sec (NFQ 5-6) 2009 Post-sec (NFQ 5-6) 2014 Third level (NFQ 6-10) 2009 Third level (NFQ 6-10) 2014 Source: SLMRU (SOLAS) analysis of CSO data There were declines in the numbers with upper secondary education or less and increases in numbers with third level qualifications The younger age cohorts are more highly qualified 5
Note: Labour market data by field of education reflects the field of a person s highest level of education and, as such, may mask a person s primary qualification 6
