INTRODUCTION The papers of a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism primarily pertain to his years as professor of journalism at St. John's University, Shanghai, China, and adviser to the Nationalist Chinese Ministry of Information. Included are transcripts of oral interviews, correspondence, literary productions, minutes, printed materials, maps, lists, photographs, and books. Contained is information on Votaw's life; writers, missionaries, political and military leaders, and events in China (1922-1977); U.S. China policy; Chinese and American journalism and newspapers; Shanghai Short Story Club; and St. John's University and University of Missouri School of Journalism. DONOR INFORMATION The Votaw Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Maurice E. Votaw on 3 December 1976 (Accession No. 4030). Additions were made to the papers periodically from 8 December 1976 to 9 April 1980 (Accession Nos. 4031, 4052, 4053, 4056, 4060, 4277). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Maurice Eldred Votaw was born in Eureka, Missouri, in 1899 and earned a BJ in 1918 and an MA in 1921 from the University of Missouri. He taught journalism at St. John s University, Shanghai, China, 1922-1939 and 1947-1949; served as adviser to the Nationalist Chinese Ministry of Information, 1939-1949; and taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, 1950-1970. While in China he served as secretary of the American Advisory Committee and American Red Cross, 1940-1948, and as treasurer of the Middle School Relief Committee and Episcopal Charity Fund, 1941-1948. He was a Member of the Shanghai Short Story Club. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Votaw Papers are arranged by type of material and then chronologically there under. More complete descriptions of the papers are in the folder list that follows.
