Our Lady s & St Mochua s Spring School News 34 Issued March 2015 www.derrynooseps.co.uk Farewell Mr Mone: Mr Mone bid farewell to our school on Tuesday 31 st March 2015. A presentation was made to Mr Mone on behalf of the entire school community as well as presentations from his P7 Class & Parents, St Mochua s GAC and the Staff. Mr Mone thanked everyone for their generosity and for their support and kindness over his eight years at our school. We wish him all the luck in the world in his new position, Principal of St Michael s PS Newtownhamilton. Term 2A/B 15 1

Canon Crawley: We congratulate Canon Crawley on celebrating his Golden Jubilee in the Priesthood. To mark this occasion we presented Canon with a voucher for his favourite hotel, Kelly s Roslare (Joint Parish gift from the five primary schools) as well as a Tipperary Vase and Tree to plant in his garden. All-County Camogie Champions!! Congratulations to our girls camogie team which made history this term by becoming the first girls team to win a competition at Our Lady s and St Mochua s. The girls won the Cumann na mbunscol All-County Indoor Camogie 5-a-side competition, and will now go on to represent Armagh in the Ulster competitions. Term 2A/B 15 2

Enterprise Week!! Well done to the Student Council who along with Mrs Warner organised this years Enterprise Week activities including the very successful Swap Shop Day! Also, all of our Classroom Assistants who delivered some excellent Young Enterprise lessons. Catholic Schools Week: A big thank you to Mrs Hamilton who organised our Catholic Schools Week celebrations. Each class visited St Mochua s Church and learned all about its history, while The Student Council performed a wonderful Assembly. Term 2A/B 15 3

Quiz Competitions:Well done to Thomas, Dylan, Teirnan, Anthony and Mark in Primary 7 who along with Grace Boyle, Meave and Sinead competed at this years Cumann na mbunscol and Credit Union Quizzes. WW2 Museum Visit: Our Primary 4 class had a very informative visit to Armagh Musuem as part of their World Around Us studies. Toy Day In January every child was able to take in a Christmas toy and play along side their classmates. Snow!! We had some bad snow at the start of this term. The Primary 7 s made the most of the adverse weather! Hairspray: We thankst Patrick s High School inviting our Primary 6 and 7 classes to a matinee show of their musical, Hairspray. They really enjoyed the performance and were able to spot a number of past pupils in the cast!! Term 2A/B 15 4

MS Walk: The whole school took part in an MS Walk in Gosford this month. Every family had the chance to support the charity and sponsor the children. We raised an outstanding total of 2070. Thank you to everyone who supported this important charity fundraiser. World Record Holders: Our Primary 6 and 7 classes were invited to the Odyssey Arena in Belfast to take part in a World Record Attempt. The record was for the most children taking part in a lesson at the same time. The old record was smashed, so not only did the children learn all about science, but they also got themselves into the Guinness Book of Records! Term 2A/B 15 5

Roots of Empathy: Our Primary 4 class continue to watch baby Sophia grow and develop. They have really formed a huge bond with her! Eco-Garden: Our busy Eco-Committee have secured the development of a Willow Hut which now stands ion our Eco-Garden. We continue to move towards achieving the coveted Green Flag Award! School Aid Romania: We donated a cheque to a number of our past pupils who will be travelling to Romania in order to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We wish them the best of luck. Red Day: Our school held a Red Day to raise money for the Chest Heart and Stroke Foundation. It tied in perfectly with St Valentine s Day. Every child dropped a 1 into a bucket at the school door organised again by our busy School Council a total of 167.05 was raised many thanks. Youth Speak Well done to Anthony Keenan and Mia Vallely who represented the school at the Youth Speak public speaking competition held in The Palace Stables. The competition is run by the Department of Environment and is all about promoting reducing waste and recycling. This years topic was, A Day in the life of a Waste Superhero. Both candidates produced fantastic, informative and entertaining speeches and really did the school proud on the day. Term 2A/B 15 7

Sacraments: This is a very important year for our Primary 4 and Primary 7 classes. The Primary 4 class recently received the Sacrament of Confession while the Primary 7 class received the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Well done to both classes that worked very hard preparing for these important Sacraments. The Primary 4 class now embark on their preparation for the Sacrament of Communion. Tossies Cottage: As part of their World Around Us Local Study, our Primary 7 class visited Tossies Cottage to learn all about its history. Mr John Makem hosted the class, telling them the story of the cottage and highlighting how the cottage is now used for story telling and musical gatherings. The class took part in a live session of singing and traditional music, showcasing the talent among the young people of Derrynoose. Term 2A/B 15 8

Green Day : To celebrate St Patrick s Day we had a Green Day in school. All staff and children dressed up in green costumes and throughout the day took part in St Patrick s Day activities including a Ceili in the school hall. This was great craic and the children really enjoyed the day. A big thanks to Mrs Mary Nugent for teaching the different ceili dances over the last month. Term 2A/B 15 9

Accelerated Reading: Well done to our 100% club winners Caoimhe Hourican and Lauren Mone! And a special congratulations to the members of our Millionaire Club Mia Vallely, Grace Boyle and Sinead Quinn. Term 2A/B 15 11

Sport: Cumann na mbunscol Indoor Competitions As stated on the front page, the girls camogie team made history this term. We were also the only school in the county to qualify for the finals for each of the four codes. We have also qualified for the Spring League 7-a-side finals. What a successful year it has been so far in GAA. Term 2A/B 15 12

Soccer: Well done to our girls and boys soccer teams that took part in the High School Partnership Cup Tournament this week. We were delighted to win the shield over coming a touch match against St Francis of Assisi PS Keady. International Road Race: Congratulations to all the children from Primary 4-7 who took part in the Armagh International Road Race at the Mall in Armagh recently. A very tough run for all involved well done! Half Time Games: Well done to all the primary 7 pupils that have played at half time of Armagh National League games so far this year. Brianna McKee and Thomas Farrell. Half Term Certificates (April 15): Congratulations to all the boys and girls who received Half Term Certificates for Good Behaviour, Consistent Effort, Excellent Handwriting, Good Homeworks and Special Principal Recognition Work during term 2B. Term 2A/B 15 14

Primary 5 Assembly: Congratulations to Primary 5 who performed their Class Assembly by telling the story of the Three Trees. Their readings, drama and song were excellent and we thank Mrs Warner and Anne for their efforts in preparaing the children. The Primary 5 presented three trees, one to Canon Crawley to mark his Golden Jubilee, One to Mr Mone to plant in his new home and one to Mr Farrell for the School s ECO Garden. Term 2A/B 15 15

Stations of the Cross: Our term ended with the Primary 7 Enactment of the Passion of the Lord. This was truly a very uplifting and meaningful service. Many thanks to Mrs Hamilton, Mr Murray and the Primary 7 Class. Special thanks to Mrs Warner and her choir who sang so beautifully. Term 2A/B 15 16
