Since its inception in 1960 as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College, the Institute has established itself as a premier center engaged in imparting quality technological education and providing support to research and development activities. The Institute has been actively involved in applied research in looking at and resolving problems faced by the society in several areas like environment, water resources, rock mechanics, new structures, VLSI etc. The Institute offers Bachelors Degree courses in 9 disciplines of Engineering (All the 9 B.Tech Degree Programmes have been accredited by NBA for maximum feasible period of 5 years w.e.f July 01, 2014) and Postgraduate Degree in 29 disciplines in Engineering, Management and Science. The Institute offers doctoral programme in all Departments. The students are admitted to the B.Tech degree programs on the basis of the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) JEE (Main) conducted at various centers all over India. International students are admitted through various students exchange programs, i.e. MEA, ICCR, etc. and scheme of Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA). Students admitted in M.Tech programs through GATE are eligible to receive scholarship. Every year 150 full time fellowship seats for admission to Ph.D programme is offered across all the Departments of the Institute and interdisciplinary areas. The Institute ranks among the best technological Institutions in the country and has contributed in all sectors of technological developments. LOCATION: NITK is located in Mangalore City along with Kanyakumari-Mumbai National Highway 66. However, candidates belonging to PwD category admitted from the academic year 2016-17 onwards will get Tuition Fee exemption. # Tuition fee for the candidates admitted under DASA Scheme & Foreign Nationals admitted through Ministry of External Affairs (Self-finance Scheme) is US $ 3500 per sem (SAARC Country US $ 1750 per sem). For those candidates admitted from the academic year 2015-16 onwards, the tuition fee is US $ 4000 per sem (SAARC country US $ 2000per sem.). # Tuition Fee for the students admitted under CIWG Scheme of DASA during the academic year 2016-17 is US $ 960. Rules For Change Branch: NITK UG - Curriculum 2015 Page No. 7 6. CHANGE OF BRANCH: 6.1 Normally a student admitted to a particular branch of the undergraduate programme will continue studying in that branch till completion. However, the Institute may permit a student admitted through JEE (Main) /DASA quota, to change from one branch of studies to another after the first two semesters. Such changes will be permitted, in accordance with the provisions laid down hereinafter, by the concerned competent authority. 6.2 Normally, only those students will be eligible for consideration of a change of branch, after the second semester, who have a) completed all the common credits required in the first two semesters of their studies, in their first attempt; b) obtained a SGPA of not less than 8.00 (7.00 for SC/ST) in both the FIRST as well as the SECOND semester; 6.3 Application for change of branch must be made by the intending eligible students in the prescribed form and to be submitted before the last working day of the second semester as announced in the academic calendar. 6.4 Change of branch shall be strictly in order of merit of the applicants. For this purpose the CGPA obtained at the end of the second semester shall be considered. Subject Test Score of the applicants will be considered. The change of branch is permitted only to vacancies as per eligibility and category of admission. 6.5 A common CGPA List shall be prepared at the end of the second semester, category wise to consider students for branch change. 6.6 The applicants may be allowed a change in branch, strictly in order of inter se merit, subject to the limitations as given below: (a) The actual number of students in the third semester in any particular branch to which the transfer is to be made, should not exceed the sanctioned strength and the actual number of students in any branch from which transfer is being sought does not fall below 75% of the total sanctioned intake. (b) If a student S1 is not permitted to change from branch A to B due to the clause 7.6 (a) above, any other student S2 from any branch with CGPA less than S1 will also not be permitted to change to branch B. 6.7 The process of change of branch shall be completed on the first day of registration for the third semester courses. Merit Scholarship will be awarded in the institute every year to top five students in the order of merit based JEE (Main) All India Rank, admitted to each branch of the undergraduate programmes subject to the condition that they should have 90% marks at 10+2 level or equivalent qualifying examination. 2. Merit-cum-means scholarship will be awarded in the institute every year to top 50 meritorious students in the order of merit based on JEE (Main), All India Rank, subject to the condition that their parent's income is < 4.5 Lakhs and they should have 70% marks at 10+2 level or equivalent qualifying examination. In addition to the above, many of our students have also received scholarships awarded by various government Departments and private Charitable Institutions/Associations. Training & Placement: DEPARTMENT OF TRAINING, PLACEMENT AND STUDENTS' WELFARE NITK 2015-2016 The Placement activity of the department consists in inviting reputed private and public sector organizations in the country to visit the Institute to interview the outgoing UG and PG students for recruitment.
