Corcoran High School 2017-2018 Community Engagement Plan Disseminating Information: **All dates will be added into the newsletter and put on social media to get information out Information will be given to students on the first day of school, and to families during orientation nights Social media and the school website will be emphasized as the hub for communication Dates of events will be shared with community centers and local politicians, etc. o A 'Community Contacts' List will be Created and Shared to Admins and School Leaders **Methods of Communication: A School Newsletter will be sent out monthly containing home/community events Dates will be added on the School Calendar (Notebook, Outlook, Website) There will be a Corcoran Communications Postcard given to students on the first day, and handed to families at Orientation, Open House, sporting events, and any school events. This will contain access information on: o Facebook- official school page o Twitter- official twitter account o Remind sign up for one or all Sporting events School events College/IB (academic) Community Events Wednesday August 30th 10 th, 11 th, 12 th Grade Orientation 1:00pm-2:00pm Any new 10 th, 11 th, 12 th grade students entering Corcoran High School will be given a tour of the building with their families, and participate in an assembly to answer any questions regarding academics and programs that we offer throughout the year. 9 th Grade Orientation 6:00pm-8:00pm Our 9 th Grade WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Leaders, along with faculty and staff will facilitate an evening of fun activities for our incoming 9 th graders in order to acclimate them

to high school as well as become familiar with their mentors that will help them to transition throughout the year. Thursday October 5 th Open House 6:00pm-8:00pm Parents and families will follow their child s schedule in an opportunity to meet their child s teachers as well as gain an understanding of how their child is progressing academically in school. This gives both teachers and families an opportunity to connect and collaborate their efforts in order to best support their child s academic and behavioral needs. Students will facilitate discussions and share progress. Thursday, October 12 th FAFSA/College Planning Night 6:00pm-8:00pm Families of Corcoran High School are invited to join in this event to learn about college material for their upcoming students who are going to be seniors. Guidance Counselors will provide information on SATs, FASFAs, and the whole college entry process. This event is targeted for Juniors and Seniors. Saturday, October 21 st Student Success Academy Workshops -9:00 am-1:00 pm Students will register to attend various workshops offered on a Saturday morning each quarter. Students will have the opportunity to take a workshop or class offered in a variaty of different areas, possibly including: a cooking class, a budgeting workshop, a Zumba or Yoga class, a car mechanics workshop, a class where they will learn to write and tell their own life story, or have an opportunity for additional help in preparing their college applications and FAFSA or on refining their interviewing skills, in addition to a multitude of other opportunities capitalizing on life skills and student interest. The day will end with a student luncheon. Tuesday, November 7 th Parent/Teacher Conferences -12:00 pm-2:50 pm Parents and guardians are invited to Corcoran to meet with their student's teachers to discuss their child's academic performance and to see how the teacher, parent/guardian, and student can work better, collaboratively, towards the student's success. Student Showcase Night -5:30 pm-7:00 pm

Families are invited to Corcoran to see what their students have been learning and workinf on in their classroom. Students will lead tours, talk with parents, and showcase their learning, talents (with musical performances), and more. There will also be opportunities for parents to get more information on how to support their student, getting their student ready for college and/or a career, etc. Tuesday, November 14 th Parent/Teacher Conferences -12:00 pm-2:50 pm Parents and guardians are invited to Corcoran to meet with their student's teachers to discuss their child's academic performance and to see how the teacher, parent/guardian, and student can work better, collaboratively, towards the student's success. ENL Community Night 6:00pm-8:00pm Families of Corcoran High School's ENL population will be invited to meet at a location on the North side, close to the neighborhood communities of our ENL population. Families will be able to meet their students' teachers and school staff, as well as learn how to support their child, and what resources are available to them and to their students as ENL students. Translators will also be in attendance. Friday, November 17 th and Saturday, November 18 th School Play 6:30pm-9:30pm Corcoran families and community members are invited to Corcoran High School to experience the work of C.A.S.T., our talented theatrical students, who will perform a dramatic production. This celebrates the work of our entire drama department, including our students in stage crew, lights, sound, and stage acting. Thursday, December 14 th (Contingency Day Tuesday, December 19 th ) Holiday Concert 7:00pm-8:30pm This is an opportunity for Corcoran High School to showcase our wonderful Band and Chorus students, as well as the Corcoran Dance Company, for families to have an opportunity to see the talents of their children and be a part of our ever-growing Musical Department. Poetry Out Loud -8:00 am-11:30 am Students will participate in a nationally organized and ranked poetry recitation competition. The event will be emceed by a student, and introduced by a selection of songs by the Corcoran Sirens and finished by a selection from the Corcoran band. The two winners of the competition will go on to a regional competition held at OCC. Saturday, January 13 th Student Success Academy Workshops -9:00 am-1:00 pm Students will register to attend various workshops offered on a Saturday morning each quarter. Students will have the opportunity to take a workshop or class offered in a variaty of different areas, possibly including: a cooking class, a budgeting workshop, a Zumba or Yoga class, a car mechanics workshop, a class where they will learn to write and tell their own life story, or have an opportunity for additional help in preparing for regents, for their college applications and FAFSA or on refining their interviewing skills, in addition to a multitude of other opportunities capitalizing on life skills and student interest. The day will end with a student luncheon. Saturday, January 27 th Chili Cook-off 12:00pm-2:00pm Families are invited to Corcoran High School to participate in a fundraising event where students and staff showcase their cooking talents. Any Corcoran community member can come to eat, or can compete for the coveted first prize trophy for best chili. Proceeds go to a scholarship for a graduating senior. Thursday, February 8 th Parent/Teacher Conferences -12:00 pm-2:50 pm Parents and guardians are invited to Corcoran to meet with their student's teachers to discuss their child's academic performance and to see how the teacher, parent/guardian, and student can work better, collaboratively, towards the student's success. Saturday, February 10 th Student Success Academy Workshops -9:00 am-1:00 pm Students will register to attend various workshops offered on a Saturday morning each quarter. Students will have the opportunity to take a workshop or class offered in a variaty

Friday, March 16 th and Saturday, March 17 th School Musical 6:30pm-9:30pm Corcoran families and community members are again invited to Corcoran High School to experience the work of C.A.S.T., our talented theatrical students, who will perform a musical production complete with singing, dancing, acting, and amazing lights, sound, and sets. Thursday, March 22 nd Multi-Cultural Festival 7:50am-4:00pm Families of Corcoran High School are invited to join us in this multi-cultural celebration to honor the many different cultures and countries represented at Corcoran High School. Our ENL students will share food, cultural dance, clothing, music, and stories from their countries that brings a unity to the culture and climate of the Corcoran community. Student Showcase Night -5:30 pm-7:00 pm Families are invited to Corcoran to see what their students have been learning and workinf on in their classroom. Students will lead tours, talk with parents, and showcase their learning, talents (with musical performances), and more. CTF Talent Show -2:30 pm-4:30 pm Students and staff will have the opportunity to showcase their musical, dance, art, creative writing, video, comedic, or theatrical talents in the CTF Talent Show. Winners will be chosen to receive prizes and accolades. Tuesday, April 17 th (Contingency Day Thursday, April 19 th ) International Baccalaureate Night 5:30pm-7:00pm Families of Corcoran High School are invited to join in this event to learn about the International Baccalaureate program for their sophomores who are going to be juniors in the program next year. They will hear from former students, teachers, and administrators about the curriculum of the program. Wednesday, April 18 th (Contingency Day Friday, April 20 th ) College Planning Night 6:00pm-8:00pm Families of Corcoran High School are invited to join in this event to learn about college material for their upcoming students who are going to be seniors. Guidance Counselors will provide information on SATs, FASFAs, and the whole college entry process. There will be special workshops targeted for freshmen and sophomore students who are beginning to think towards this end, and separate workshops for juniors in preparation, and seniors who will be guided in transitional information. Tuesday, May 1 st, Wednesday, May 2 nd, and Thursday, May 3 rd Corcoran Information Visits -9:00 am-2:00 pm School counselors, the social worker, and some students will visit surrounding middle schools within our quadrant to meet with 8 th graders and share with them what CTF is all about. They will talk about our IB and CTE programs, clubs, sports, and the overall experience of Corcoran. Tuesday, May 8 th Corcoran Shadows Day -8:00 am-12:00 pm 8 th grade students will be invited to come to Corcoran for a quick assembly, to meet some students and teachers, and to hear what opportunities are available if they choose to come to Corcoran. Students will then be able to sit in on a class and attend lunch before returning back to school.

Saturday, May 12 th CTF Charity 5K Run/Walk 8:00am-12:00pm The Corcoran community will be invited to join and support students in running or walking a 5K to promote health and wellness, and to raise funds to support a charitable cause of students' choosing. Monday, May 14 th National Honor Society Induction Night 7:00pm-8:00pm Families are invited to watch their child be inducted into the National Honor Society and hear a guest speaker as well as current Honor Society Members discuss the organization. Thursday, May 17 th (Contingency Day Tuesday, May 22 nd ) Spring Concert 7:00pm-8:30pm This is an opportunity for Corcoran High School to showcase our wonderful Band and Chorus students, as well as the Corcoran Dance Company, for families to have an opportunity to see the talents of their children and be a part of our ever-growing Musical Department. Saturday, May 19 th Instant Theater -8:00 am-7:00 pm (performance for the community begins at 5:00 pm) Students will meet to write their very own, original, one act plays, cast their plays, design sets, costumes, and lights, practice, and then perform their plays for an audience all in one day. The community is invited to experience this on-the-spot talent and creativity at their performance at 5:00 pm. Saturday, May 26 th Student Success Academy Workshops -9:00 am-1:00 pm Students will register to attend various workshops offered on a Saturday morning each quarter. Students will have the opportunity to take a workshop or class offered in a variaty of different areas, possibly including: a cooking class, a budgeting workshop, a Zumba or Yoga class, a car mechanics workshop, a class where they will learn to write and tell their own life story, or have an opportunity for additional help in preparing for regents, their college applications and FAFSA or on refining their interviewing skills, in addition to a

multitude of other opportunities capitalizing on life skills and student interest. The day will end with a student luncheon. Wednesday, May 30 th Sports Recognition Night 5:30pm-7:30pm Seniors will be recognized for their achievements, scholarships, and awards for their athletic accomplishments throughout their high school career. Parents are invited through invitation-only to witness this great event. Tuesday, June 5 th Honors Recognition Night 5:30pm-7:30pm Seniors will be recognized for their achievements, scholarships and awards for their work throughout their high school career. Parents are invited through invitation-only to witness this great event.
