Life Education for Year 5 & 6 students (behind closed doors), instrumental music lessons, Year 2 Party Mathematics Night (that was lots of fun!) and then Foundation Information Night for students enrolled for 2014. And that s without the day s program of literacy, numeracy, integrated units and specialist programs. The school is a very busy place! Each year I endeavour to meet with a group of eight students from each Year 5 and 6 classes to give feedback on what they consider we do well in terms of our teaching and learning programs. They offer suggestions for improvement and are also candid about themselves as learners and reflect on the attributes of what for them makes an effective teacher. They are indeed perceptive! Some comments made: Our teacher really supports us when we learn. She helps us through the challenges, checks that we are comfortable but encourages us and gives us time to learn new concepts. Our teachers are energetic and passionate. They treat us as adults, are honest and truthful. They know us individually as people. Year 5 & 6 are busy years. We have many and varied opportunities to learn and make independent decisions about our learning. We like that. Their suggestions for improvement? Air-conditioners! Even though that s not about teaching and learning, the students certainly felt that in the hot Summer months ahead, it would be beneficial to learn in comfort. Thank you to everyone who voted for us in the competition by the Credit Union of Australia. Wattle Park Primary School actually came second in the Victorian Doncaster division. As a consolation prize we were awarded $1,000.00. Early in term 4 we will be organising a Twilight Fun Run for families to hopefully raise the remaining amount needed for air-conditioners. It s a week ago that our Year 3 & 4 students returned home from camp at Phillip Island Adventure Resort. It was a magnificent camp with all students returned safely, healthy and very, very tired! They experienced a range of outdoor activities; canoeing, ponding, giant swing, archery, flying fox and Nature Spotto. The students faced new challenges away from home and coped admirably. I d like to especially thank all of the staff who attended and gave of their time. Mr Davey, Ms Gilmour, Ms Nield, Ms Albert, Ms Kellahan, Megan, Ms Harris and Ms Alderson-Roes. Also to our band of volunteer parents who contributed magnificently to the team; Mr Pervan (Emma 4H), Mrs Miravet (Emma 3L), Ms Hooper (Will 3H) and Mr Perry (Tara 3L) many thanks. Attached to this newsletter is a notice about the upcoming Grandparents and Older person s Day on Monday 14 th, October. It was such a success last year that we have decided to conduct it again. So please pass on the date to those you know would like to attend. On Tuesday night we had our inaugural guitar concert organised by Nathan from MusicWorld. Our students have improved their technique and confidence in such a short time. It was delightful to see students perform individually, with their teacher or as a duet. Next term we have a number of musical events, most notably our School Concert on Wednesday 30th October. This year for the first time tickets will be purchased on-line using TryBooking. Further information will be distributed next term. So stay tuned! Next Friday, we say farewell to Mrs Cynthia Tuck as she leaves us to commence maternity leave. We wish Cynthia and her husband Michael all the very best for the birth of their first child. Cynthia has made a wonderful contribution to the school with her knowledge of the mathematics curriculum, the transition process to secondary school and teaching as a team member in the flexible learning space. We look forward to Cynthia joining us at the Year 6 Graduation with her little one in tow. Don t forget next week is the last week of term and Friday is Sports Day. Students can wear any code of sports attire on that day- AFL, rugby, basketball, netball, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, just to name a few. A gold coin donation to the Cancer Council would be appreciated. Regards Gayle

In Memory It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Walters. Mrs Walters was a wonderful supporter of the reading program from Cameron Close and will be greatly missed by students and teachers alike. A tree will be planted in memory of Mrs Walters at a date to be announced soon. FOUNDATION 2014 ENROLMENTS It is that time of year when schools are preparing for the following year and student numbers are critical to the school s staffing structure. Could you please complete the required Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend enrolling your child at Wattle Park Primary School in 2014. This form is available from the office or on the school s website. It can be forwarded by mail if requested. If you are aware of any families who may live near you and have not enrolled, please encourage them to put in their enrolment forms as soon as possible. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Don t forget to check out our website at: www.wattleparkps.vic.edu.au to keep up to date with the happenings of the school: notices, news, events, dates etc. Notices gone home this week. Grandparents Day Sports Day Special Lunch Day Order Form

NO HAT, NO PLAY IT S HAT TIME AGAIN On Monday 2nd September, all students are required to wear hats outside during recess and lunchtime. Any student without a school hat, will need to sit in the designated area. If you know your child has lost his/her hat now is the time to purchase one. Please make sure your child s hat is clearly named!

SCHOOL CONCERT Our School Concert for 2013 is coming up in Term 4. The theme this year is THE BEST OF THE BEST. All classes have been hard at work learning their songs selected from a variety of musical genres or styles. The children are very excited as they have been workshopping their items in Music classes. It is always a journey as they contribute ideas, create the actions and dance moves and in many cases help arrange the songs. Once again the class teachers will coordinate the costumes with notices being distributed to parents where needed. Please put the date in your diary as we look forward to some wonderful performances and amazing efforts by the children to entertain you all. THE BEST OF THE BEST Wednesday 30th October, 2013 George Wood Performing Arts Centre Yarra Valley Anglican School Kalinda Road, Ringwood 7.00 pm start Lorelle Caulfield-Lloyd Music Teacher
