February 28, 2019 Issue #25 Shamrock Newsletter IMPORTANT DATES: Friday, March 1 st 2 nd Trimester ends TK-8 Monthly Devotion 2pm 6 th grade Confirmation Retreat 5-10pm St. Jude s collection table after school Monday, March 4 th 3 rd Trimester Begins 2019-2020 Registration Begins Tuesday, March 5 th Burning of the Palms at 10:30am/ Father Cleary Park Wednesday, March 6 th Ash Wednesday Mass 8:45am Full Uniform Friday, March 8 th Stations of the Cross 2:00pm Thursday, March 14 th Gr. 6-8 field trip Lincoln Theater 9:30-1:00pm Spirit Rally 2:00pm/Gym Green Day MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Guardians, Alumni, and Friends, This coming Monday, March 4th current families will receive the enrollment packet for the 2019-2020 school year. It is our pleasure at St. Apollinaris in continuing to partner with you, to develop the faith and academics of your child. Please note, to obtain the parishioner discount your family must meet the obligations of a St. A s parishioner, which is confirmed on the parish level. Please read over those guidelines carefully. One question I often get is, Why do we have larger class sizes? Other schools provide smaller classes. At St. A s our larger classes afford us the opportunity to provide additional class offerings and staffing, that some of our competitor schools do not offer. Our school is known to have one of the strongest academic programs in Napa. All of our students who applied and tested for our partner high school Justin-Siena were accepted. Catholic schools do not receive outside funding and the school is fully funded on tuition and fundraising. The Catholic School Department recognizes the average class size of 35 to operate a sound fiscal program. While our school is doing well financially, our current average class size equates to 28, with some classes exceeding that number and some below. Our program also offers accelerated math instruction, spanish, art, technology, science and a resource program that many schools do not offer. Please know that while our class sizes may be on the larger

2 Shamrock Newsletter size our faculty and staff is committed to the education of the whole child at St. Apollinaris. We thank you for your trust in us and the program we provide. We will continue to strive to provide the highest quality program possible for your family. Registration packets and fees are due back by Friday, March 15th. After that date any class openings will be offered to students in 1st - 7th grades who were assessed and are on our waiting lists. If for some reason you know that your family will be unable to return to St. Apollinaris for the 2019-2020 school year, please let Anna Cardwell in the front office know. As a Catholic school we continue to look for ways to improve upon our Catholic Identity and live out our faith. Next week begins our Lenten journey with Mass on Ash Wednesday at 8:45AM. Please consider joining our school for Mass. Our students will be praying the Stations of the Cross throughout Lent on Fridays at 2PM. You are welcome to join us during this time as we come together and journey as Jesus did. For more Lenten resources please visit https://www.stapollinarisparish.org/faithformation/formed.html and use code NZCHZ2 for our parish and school. Today, we practiced our regularly scheduled lock-down drill. Today s drill was purposely scheduled towards the end of the second lunch period where half of our school was at recess. Please debrief with your child any questions or concerns regarding today s drill and I welcome your feedback. The drill was different from others and was done with the intent that we never know the time of day or where our students are located, when an emergency could occur. It s important for our students to be prepared and to take all our practice drills seriously. Blessings, Mrs. Olivia Brazil, Principal SCHOOL NEWS

The offense showcased another game where everyone on the team put points on the board. The team has earned their spot as the number one seed in the playoffs as they kicked off the year-end tournament with a game against St. John Napa last Tuesday. Congratulations to the St. A's 8 th grade boy s basketball team on their First Place CSL league finish! It was a great game Saturday following the Marin Headlands trip. Despite tired legs, the boys showed real character, finishing off their last regular season game at St. A's with intensity. Jackson led all scoring with 17 pts. and 7 rebounds followed by, Dante with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Ben with 8 points. Andrew from 7th grade helped out again, pouring in 6 points followed by Jack I and Luke with 2 pts. a piece. Defense was key with Austin and Jack D helping to keep SHM at only 8 pts. at half time. Final score 47-26. We will keep you update on this week s CSL Tournament play as we go along. Good luck to both our 7 th and 8 th grade teams. Go Shamrocks! 7 Shamrock Newsletter March Madness Volunteers Needed! The St. A s March Madness Tournament is fast approaching (March 14th-17th), and is in need of many volunteers! This event is the main fundraiser for our athletic program and depends on the generosity of your time and spirit to be successful. We need volunteers to help with the entry table, scorekeeping, the cafe and the ice cream social on Saturday evening. This is a fun opportunity to earn your parent volunteer hours and is also a great opportunity for our middle school students to earn service hours (you will need to volunteer along side them). Most shifts are in short blocks of just over an hour, so sign up for one or a few! Please click here to sign up today. We thank you for your support!
