BSU International Insider News for International Students January 27, 2011 International Student Services A Note from Christy Hi, Everyone, Be sure to check out the many upcoming events and activities in this newsletter. **Check-in sessions are at the top of the priority. I look forward to seeing all of you there! **Graduating students, don t forget to sign up for an OPT workshop. **If you are planning to waive your BSU health insurance, the deadline is next Monday. **Anyone thinking of doing an internship should attend a CPT workshop next week. **Be sure to put Coffee and Conversation on your weekly schedule. I was out of town this week, so I am really looking forward to hanging out with you all next week. Coming Events & Activities Thursday, January 27, 6:30pm: Idaho Dance Theatre preview performance. See the article on page 3 for more details. Saturday, January 29, 7:00-9:00pm: Chinese New Year potluck hosted by Talk Time. See the invitation on page 4 for details. Sunday, January 30, 1:00pm: New international student orientation alternate session in the SDC. If you missed the mandatory session on the 12 th & 13th, you must attend this alternate orientation to complete your immigration check-in and receive information critical to your success here at Boise State. Monday, January 31: Deadline for filing your waiver for SHIP (Student Health Insurance Program). Remember, the waiver must be filed each semester. Monday, January 31 - Friday, February 4: International student check-in at the Student Diversity Center, daily from 9:30am to 4:00pm. Do Not Miss This! Tuesday, February 1, 3:00pm: CPT Information Meeting in the Student Diversity Center. Friday, February 4, 7:00pm: February Movie Night. Details on page 5. Sunday, February 6, All Day: ISA day trip to McCall for Winter Carnival and tubing. If you have reserved a seat and paid for the trip, please be in the new Transit Center in the Student Union Building at 8:30am. The bus will leave promptly at 9:00am. February 7, 8, and 11, various times: Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshops. See the detailed information on page 2 and sign up for one workshop.

Immigration Check-in Check-in for all international students will be held Monday, Jan 31 st thru Friday, Feb 4 th. This check-in is required by U.S. Immigration to maintain your legal status as an F-1 or J-1 visa holder. Check-in takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. You must come to the Student Diversity Center (SDC) in the Student Union Building (SUB) between 9:30am and 4:00pm any day that week (January 31 February 4) to fulfill this requirement. Any student who does not attend the check-in session will be fined a $50 fee. NOTE: If you are a new international student and attended the orientation January 12 & 13, you are checked-in with immigration. There is no need for you to participate in this check-in session this semester. You will need to attend check in next semester. CPT Informational Workshop Important Information for students planning to do an internship Tuesday, February 1st at 3 pm At the Student Diversity Center International students must be approved by ISS prior to accepting an internship position. If you are thinking about doing an internship this semester or this coming summer, I invite you to attend this informational workshop. In this workshop I will discuss the immigration rules and regulations related to internships, the Boise State internship registration process, and other relevant issues. Please email Merrilou Burris at MerrilouBurris@boisestate.edu to sign up for this workshop. Schedule for OPT Workshops: If you plan to participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT) after Spring semester, or just want more information about this program, you must attend one of the following workshops: Monday, February 7 th, noon - 2:00pm Tuesday, February 8 th, 3:00-5:00pm Friday, February 11 th, 9:00 11:00am Workshops will be held in the Student Diversity Center in the SUB. Please call 426-3652 to reserve your spot. When you come, please bring your I-20, your passport with I-94 card, two passport-size photos and a check or money order (to USCIS) for $380.00.

SERVE ON A COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS STUDENT TUITION AND FEES In February of each year, Boise State University holds an open hearing to consider the amount of tuition and fees students will pay in the next academic year. A university committee deliberates on the tuition and fee proposals and develops recommendations for university and State Board of Education consideration. We are seeking student participation on this committee by filling two At-large student positions. If you are interested in serving on this Student Tuition and Fee Committee, please complete application on page 6 of this newsletter, or visit the Vice President for Student Affairs' website at http://www.boisestate.edu/vpsa/. The deadline to apply has been extended to Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Serving on the Student Tuition and Fee Committee requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours in February. To be eligible, a student must be available to: 1. Attend the Tuition and Fee hearing on Thursday, February 10 from 1:00-5:00 pm, and 2. Attend a follow up committee meeting on Wednesday, February 23 from 1:00-5:00 pm. In addition to the 2 at-large student members, the committee includes the ASBSU President and Vice President, other university administrators and staff, and is chaired by Vice President for Finance and Administration, Stacy Pearson. For more detailed information, please call the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at 426-1418, or stop by Room 107 in the Administration Building. Idaho Dance Theatre is having their Winter Performance this weekend at the Special Events Center located in the Student Union Building. We invite you to our Preview Performance tonight the 27th. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 7:00. Arrive early to get great seats! At preview night, a minimum of a $5 donation is requested.
