hantsport.ednet.ns.ca Phone 902-684-4000 Fax 902-684-4004 We Need YOU Hantsport School News February 2015 Hantsport School s Breakfast Program is in need of volunteers to help us each school day morning. Students meet in the Family Studies room between 7:50 and 8:10 am before school to share breakfast. Everyone is welcome but we need some help. There is a calendar in the office with a signup sheet and we ask that you consider helping. If you bring your child(ren) to school in the morning, perhaps you could arrive a little early and come in and help. It s a busy place, so we are looking for a couple of volunteers each morning. Milk Program Also a reminder that our milk program is up and running. Milk can be ordered on a weekly basis on your lunch order form that generally goes home on Tuesday to be returned on Friday for the following week. Storm day cancellations will be taken into consideration with credit being offered the following week. Milk is.40 per 250 milk 2% container costing $2 for a week (5days) Lunch Orders If storm days affect the lunch order for the day, we will notify you when it will be replaced. If school is cancelled on one day, do not assume it will be offered the following day. It will likely be offered the following week (see exception below for Subs). Pack a lunch just to be sure. Lunch Options Tuesdays Subs from Cooke s Independent (formerly Save Easy) If school is cancelled on Tuesday, subs will be on Wednesday unless Wednesday is a storm day as well. Thursdays Pita Pit Fridays Pizza Please note that due to Early Dismissal on Thursday, February26, Pitas will be on Wednesday that week. Grade 4/5 class works with World War I resources

Page 3 PHYSICAL EDUCATION CORNER In January and February the students in the Hantsport School will be going out once a week for their Physical Education classes. We will be covering a number of the Dept. of Ed. outcomes such as experiencing a seasonal outdoor activity, learning about routines and procedures for outdoor safety, using a community resource for an outdoor activity and playing a variety of games such as snow soccer. Presently they are enjoying the rink facility and are either skating or playing hockey. We appreciate all the work that has gone into making and maintaining the ice by volunteers and we also thank all the adults who come to the rink to help with skate tying and to assist the students on the ice. It is amazing to see the younger students improve in their skating skills and they are very quick to learn how to glide around the ice. Some of the older students who do not own skates or have any at the school that fit them, take part in hockey in their boots. Many are learning to play that sport and seem to enjoy it. After one of the 1st days at the rink one grade 6 student commented that it was the "most fun gym class ever!" Being outside in the fresh air is healthy for everyone as sunlight stimulates vitamin D which strengthens bones and it can raise your spirits. Staying active in the winter also boosts immunity and helps the students keep fit. We are fortunate to live in Canada where we can participate in a variety of outdoor activities such as coasting, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and hiking. Now all we need for a few of these things is some snow! Seeking Skates We need some smaller sized skates such as 12, 1 or 2 for Grade P-1's. We also are in need of boys and girls skates for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. If you have some skates or know of anyone who may have some they aren't using anymore the school would appreciate the donation to our skating program.

Page 4 Hantsport School CITIZENSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS During the Science Fair public viewing, prior to the awards ceremony, on Wednesday, February 25 th, our school s Citizenship Committee will be having a bake sale featuring yummy, homemade items in the gymnasium. Proceeds from our bake sale will benefit a local organization of our committee s choosing. Please look for a notice going home outlining the details of our next efforts. Thank you for your continued support! MS. B S CORNER Our school would like to thank the Friends of the Hantsport Public Library for having the seniors interviews that were conducted by my grade 8 class of 2013 published into a bound book. We have copies of these interviews in the library for the public to read and enjoy! A special thank you goes out to Leah Winters and Mr. Chase for making this happen! Please be reminded that students need supplies with them in school every day. This includes pencils, coloring utensils, glue and scissors. SCIENCE FAIR Please take note of the following dates involving our Science Fair.: Set-up of projects will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 24th so all students are expected to have their projects in that day (backboards, models, logbooks, etc.). Judging will take place throughout the morning of Wednesday, February 25th. Public Viewing / Awards Ceremony begins at 6pm on Wednesday, February 25th. Students are encouraged to take their projects home with them at the end of the Awards Ceremony. Thank you everyone for the 2nd Annual Winter Carnival that was a huge success again this year even with the weather the way it was.
