There is a calendar in the office with a signup sheet and we ask that you consider helping. If you bring your child(ren) to school in the morning, perhaps you could arrive a little early and come in and help. It s a busy place, so we are looking for a couple of volunteers each morning. Page 3 PHYSICAL EDUCATION CORNER In January and February the students in the Hantsport School will be going out once a week for their Physical Education classes. We will be covering a number of the Dept. of Ed. outcomes such as experiencing a seasonal outdoor activity, learning about routines and procedures for outdoor safety, using a community resource for an outdoor activity and playing a variety of games such as snow soccer. Presently they are enjoying the rink facility and are either skating or playing hockey. We appreciate all the work that has gone into making and maintaining the ice by volunteers and we also thank all the adults who come to the rink to help with skate tying and to assist the students on the ice. It is amazing to see the younger students improve in their skating skills and they are very quick to learn how to glide around the ice. Some of the older students who do not own skates or have any at the school that fit them, take part in hockey in their boots. Many are learning to play that sport and seem to enjoy it. After one of the 1st days at the rink one grade 6 student commented that it was the "most fun gym class ever!" Being outside in the fresh air is healthy for everyone as sunlight stimulates vitamin D which strengthens bones and it can raise your spirits. Staying active in the winter also boosts immunity and helps the students keep fit. We are fortunate to live in Canada where we can participate in a variety of outdoor activities such as coasting, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and hiking. Now all we need for a few of these things is some snow! Seeking Skates We need some smaller sized skates such as 12, 1 or 2 for Grade P-1's. We also are in need of boys and girls skates for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. If you have some skates or know of anyone who may have some they aren't using anymore the school would appreciate the donation to our skating program.
