THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND

Transcription:

Generation 1 1. JOHN 1 HOSTETTLER was born on 04 Aug 1831 in Switzerland. He died on 30 May 1891. He married UNKNOWN. John: John Hostettler was buried after 30 May 1891 in Luper Cemetery, Irving, Lane Co., Oregon. Notes for John Hostettler: Perhaps we will never know just why John Hostettler is buried in Luper Cemetery and has such and elegant headstone. I found little information about him. At the time of the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, there were three Hostettler brothers living in Saginaw precinct of Lane County, Oregon. Saginaw is south of Eugene between Creswell and Cottage Grove. All three of the brothers, John, Christian and Nickolas, as well as a sister, Louisa Rowe are buried in the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery. The fact that the oldest son was named John and that they are all buried in a family plot made me believe they were all related and probably related to the John in Luper Cemetery. The proof of that came when I found a widowed John Hostettler with children, John, Chris and Louisa in the 1885 Kansas State Census. They were all born in Switzerland and came to Kansas from Ohio. Other census records show they came to America in 1881. I have no explanation why Nickolas was not with the family at the time of the 1885 Kansas State census, except that he was only 4-years-old and might have been with a relative whom I did not discover. The reason for John Hostettler (1831-1891) being illusive is that they arrived in America in 1881 - too late to be enumerated in the 1880 U.S. Census. Because the 1890 U.S. Census has been destroyed and does not exist, and he died in 1891, there was no record of him in Oregon. I did not discover when or why the family moved to Oregon. Here is what I have found about the family. John Hostettler and unknown had the following children: i. JOHN 2 HOSTETTLER (son of John Hostettler and unknown) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born in Apr 1860 in Switzerland 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8. He died on 24 Dec 1944 in Roseburg, Douglas Co., Oregon. Luper Cemetery Research This document does not claim to be an exhaustive report on this name or this family. The purpose is to examine where the families in Luper Cemetery came from before they settled in the north Eugene/Irving/south Junction City area, where the family members went after the death of these family members, and how they might relate to others buried in Luper Cemetery. This family has been thoroughly researched and documented using Ancestry.com, Eugene Register-Guard newspapers at Google News Archive, State birth, marriage and death certificates, city directories and more. This research was done using Family Tree Maker software with ability to search Ancestry.com and add those findings. I would be happy to share sources and/or discuss any discrepancies.
