NEWHAVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ISSUE 15 2016 Newhaven Primary School Newsletter NEWHAVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL LEARNING FOR THE FUTURE WEDNESDAY 25 TH MAY 2016 National Sorry Day and Newhaven Primary School Sorry Day Event The first National Sorry Day was held on May 26, 1998, which was one year after the tabling of a report about the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The report, known as Bringing Them Home, acknowledged that Indigenous children were forcibly separated from their families and communities since the early days of European occupation in Australia. Australian Federal and State government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments were responsible for this forced separation. Sorry Day falls on 26th May each year and this year throughout the South Gippsland/ Bass Coast Educational precinct we would like to acknowledge the Apology and the journey of indigenous people both locally and nationally. This Thursday 26th May at 9:15 am schools across the South Gippsland region will be gathering at their Learning Stones to place hundreds of cutout handprints in the ground as a symbolic gesture of acknowledgement of the apology and the journey of indigenous people. Newhaven Primary School would like to invite all families and school community members to be come and be a part of this special event. Book Fair The Book Fair is approaching fast - it will be held next Wednesday 25th May from 2.45pm to 3.45pm in the small hall. All sales raise $ towards the purchase of books for the school library. NEWHAVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL Once again I would like to start this week s report by thanking Wendy Nicol for her amazing service to Newhaven Primary School. Wendy has not only been an amazing teacher but she has also been a much loved member of staff, and one of the most genuine and caring people you will find. I am sure once again you will join me in wishing her all the best as she begins her next role as Assistant Principal at Wonthaggi North Primary School this week. I would like to welcome Mr David James and Mrs Tanya White to our staff for the remainder of this Term. Both of these teachers bring unique teaching skills to our school and I am sure your students will have already spoken very highly of them. A big thankyou to those parents/guardians who sent boxes into school over the previous weeks and to those who managed to attend our Education Week activity afternoon last Wednesday. A terrific afternoon was had with students cutting, pasting, sticking and creating some really special sculptures. A fantastic day was had last Friday when selected senior school students travelled to Wonthaggi to take part in the District Football and Netball day. We should all be extremely proud of the sportsman and sportswoman ship shown on the day by our Newhaven Primary School students. It was a beautiful sunny day and all students tried their best. Both the football and netball teams had victories over similar sized schools and were very competitive against the bigger schools on the day. Today students are spending time with a Pavement Artist creating a piece of artwork on the concrete outside the back door of the main office. I would encourage you all to come and view the finished piece at some point over the next few week and ask your student to show you which part they created. A reminder to Grade 5/6 students that you leave for Camp next Monday. A checklist of what to pack and what to take will be sent home later this week. Camps are always one of the best memories of Primary School and we all wish you a happy and memorable time.
