History of Discussion Class (DC): Discussion Class was started by late Mr. B S Gopala Krishna Murthy sir (GK Sir) in 1974 in Bhadravathi. It s a platform by the students, Of the Students and For the Students. Initially it was started in a car shed @ GK Sir s home and later GK sir built first floor house and dedicated to the activities of DC. Almost 8000 students benefited from Discussion Class. Here senior students facilitate the studies of juniors. So it can be called as a Self-help school without any Tuition Fee. GK sir helped the students for almost 40 years and also received many awards from respectable trusts for his social service. History of DC Foundation: It was started by few DC alumni under the guidance of GK Sir. The Main objective of DC Foundation was to Help the poor students to pursue Higher Education. GK sir used to identify the DC student and arrange first year fee by putting his money and through donations; second year fee till final year fee will be paid by DC Foundation. Three students (Deepika, Kousalya and Smitha) have completed their engineering with the help of DC Foundation Discussion Class Association : DC Association is an alumni association of Discussion Class students. DC Association is a registered-on 28th Dec 2013 under Karnataka Societies Act 1960 in Bangalore with 7 DC alumni under the leadership of Mr Dhananjaya. It holds the objectives of both the Discussion Class and Discussion Class Foundation. Discussion Class Association has been officially inaugurated on 2 nd Feb 2014 by by Sri. Aims and Objectives To promote and foster mutually beneficial interaction between the Discussion Class Alumni To undertake activities of nation building including those of charitable nature To promote education to economically backward students who are intellectually high Provide financial aid to needy students for their studies To conduct regular Discussion Classes to motivate students to have a systematic approach to studies and get interested in acquiring knowledge To establish Discussion class centres at educational institutions and introduce its methods of education to the children especially in the under privileged regions and to create a group of volunteers to assist the schools in conducting Discussion Classes To create awareness of social issues and develop social responsibilities P a g e 3 19
To provide consulting services to students for their higher studies and voca tional guidance To induce leadership skills and develop moral value systems among students To provide soft skill Program To organize cultural, sport and curricular events to the students and also conduct other competitive events P a g e 4 19
Events/Programs 1. Scholarship Distribution for the year 2016-17: We have granted scholarships to 7 students this year. A total of Rupees One Lakh Fourty Five thousand (Rs 1,45,000.00) has been distributed to 7 students. The details of the students are below: On behalf of all the DC association members and fund donors, we wished Chethan, Manoj, Ranjitha, Asha, Manjunath, Ajay and Chaitra best of luck for their studies and their future. 2. Independence Day Celebration We have celebrated Independence Day on 15 th August in collaboration with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Katte Balaga (A Cultural volunteer group) in AR Layout where our association is registered. Scholarship were granted during Independence Day to Manjunath and Chaitra. P a g e 6 19

3) 3rd Year Anniversary Celebrations We had celebrated our 3 rd year anniversary on 7 th Jan 2017 and released the logo for our organization. GK Sir father Sri Srinivas Murthy launched the logo and addressed the gathering. Sri Srinagesh, Mr Krishnagowda and other guests were also present along with DC alumni and GK sir family P a g e 8 19

4) Tree Plantation & Republic Day Celebrations We had planted trees in AR Layout along with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Katte Balaga volunteers and kids. The event has been covered in famous weekly news paper, Garden City Plus. P a g e 10 19

5) Women s Achiever s Award Recognition Managing Committee announced the women s achiever for the year in recognition of their contribution to DC Association and to serve the society. Following are the names: 1) Mrs Deepika: The first student who got scholarship from DC Foundation later who become member of DC Association executive member and contributed for the success of DC Association. Working as Professor in Govt College. 2) Miss Kousalya R: The second student who got scholarship from DC Foundation and later become the President of our registered DC Association for a period of 3 years and contributed actively for the success of our association. Working in Karnataka Engg Services 3) Miss Smitha: The third student who got scholarship from DC Foundation and joined as member of association and supporting DC activities. Working in KPTCL as Exec Engg 4) Mrs Archana: Active member of association holding the position of Treasurer and supporting the DC activities since from many years. 5) Mrs Harini: Active member of association holding the position of Joint Treasurer and supporting the DC activities since many years and helping in organizing the events for DC service activities 6) Mrs Suma: One of the main Pillar of DC Association whom we call "Suma Akka". Active member of DC Association holding the position of Vice-President (Acting President now, due to President resignation) and supporting DC activities from many years. 7) Mrs Aparna Udupa: One of the active member of our association who supported us in running DC classes in Ulsoor Muth for a period of almost an year on the weekends. 8) Miss Sindhu: DC Association scholarship awardee for the year 2014-15 and member of the association supporting us in all the DC service activities. 9) Miss Uma: DC Association scholarship awardee for the year 2014-15 and member of the association supporting us in all the DC service activities This is only list that comes to mind immediately who are actively involved, but there are lot of other women's associated with our organization as members and non-members in supporting the DC service activities including Mrs Hema, Mrs Chandrakala, Mrs Bhagya, Dr Vani, Dr Veena, Mrs Deepa Rani, Dr Manasa, Mrs Kalyani, Mrs Vijaya Shanti, Mrs Vasudha, Mrs Vijayalakshmi and many more. 6) Gandhi Jayanthi Daan Utsav (Joy of Giving Week) We have celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi by running a online campaign on awareness on educating girl child through Daan Utsav (Enjoy the Joy of Giving week). 7) DC Library Platform for Free Book Donations to needy students We have created a small library @ our office to help the needy students to get their books for free. Important Milestone We are happy to announce that our first book on GK sir which was published in 2014 has been selected by Karnataka State Govt Public Library department to keep a copy in the public library across Karnataka. Meaning, if you go to any public library managed by state government, you will see GK sir book in the library and we hope that the Discussion mode of education which GK sir thought us will become well known in the students, parent s community who reads the book and get benefit out of it. We had supplied 300 copies of the book to the concerned department in February 2017. Kudos to all who are part of the book publishing and special thanks to Nani uncle who is constantly following it up with concerned department for getting this done!! P a g e 15 19

Donations from DC alumni, Friends and like-minded People We receive donations from DC alumni, friends and like-minded people who are willing to support poor students to do their studies and for the charitable work which we undertake. Let s all of us put together joining hands for supporting the students who are in need of financial assistance. This is one good way of helping the society to make sure that, poor students get their education. Financial conditions of students should not be the constraints to fulfil their dreams of achieving their life goals.
