Concordia Claims TAPPS Henderson Cup for 01-017 Tomball s Concordia Lutheran High School finished atop TAPPS as the highest performing extracurricular private high school in all of Texas. (Tomball, Texas) Over 00 private high schools across the entire state of Texas comprise TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools). The Concordia Crusaders finished not only as the top school in TAPPS largest division (A), but Concordia also earned the highest number of points compared to any school in TAPPS six divisions. The Henderson Cup is the most prestigious and competitive title a private school can win in Texas. This award measures a school s total extracurricular offerings and awards points for state tournament finishes and playoff births. Concordia won their second Henderson Cup title in school history this year with a total of 103 points ( points in Athletics and 41 points in Fine Arts which includes Academic competition). Concordia earned points in 19 of the 4 total TAPPS extracurricular event categories that the school offers. Henderson Cup point totals are counted from 7 total activities (8 Fine Arts and 19 Athletics). Currently, CLHS does not offer Wrestling, Dance Team or Orchestra; however, Concordia does offer additional programs that are not scored in TAPPS that include Boy s Lacrosse and 4H/FFA. Based on school enrollment, 014-015 was the first year that Concordia made the jump to TAPPS largest division. That season, the Crusaders finished 3 rd in the race for the Henderson Cup behind runner- up San Antonio Antonian and Argyle Liberty Christian. In 015-01, Concordia finished as runner- up by leaping Antonian but still finished behind Argyle Liberty by points in their second season in TAPPS top division. This season, Concordia moved another spot in the rankings and beat Argyle Liberty by five points (103-98). Argyle Liberty, from the Dallas area, had won the previous four Henderson Cup titles dating back to 01-013. Playoff births, Final Four finishes and State ships are becoming the norm at Concordia. The Crusaders brought home State ships in Volleyball, Band and Boy s Track & Field, and State Runner- Ups in Choir and Academics. State championships are worth 10 points while runner- up finishes add eight more points. Final Four births from the Crusader Baseball team (their fourth consecutive Final Four) and the Boy s Basketball team added 7 points, and third place finishes by Cheerleading, Art and Boy s Swimming each netted points.
Fine Arts Dominant Rise Many school districts are reducing funds allocated toward Fine Arts and programs are shrinking. The opposite is happening at Concordia Lutheran High School where the Fine Arts programs have improved every year, and Concordia has the top Fine Arts points producing program in all of Houston. To show the growth, the school s first Henderson Cup title came in 010-011 in TAPPS 4A division with 8 points. That year, the Crusaders earned points in 14 total categories with 8 points coming from Athletics and only 14 points in Fine Arts. CLHS Band won their second- straight State ship this year while the Choir and Academic Team both earned State Runner- Ups. This was the Academic Team s third consecutive State Runner- Up finish. Over the past nine years, Concordia s choir won seven State ships and two Runner- Ups. In total, Concordia s Fine Arts department earned 41 points, second only to Argyle Liberty Christian s 58. Athletic Program s Depth Provides Scoring Across the Board Concordia s athletic department featured teams in 18 of the 19 TAPPS athletics categories this past year. The Crusaders earned points in 13 of those 18 activities for a total of points of their 103 point total. TAPPS A Volleyball State s The Boy s Athletics teams produced the highest total out of all the TAPPS A schools, narrowly beating its all- boy school and rival, Houston St. Thomas Catholic. The Crusaders finished with 38 Boy s Athletics points while St. Thomas finished with 37. It was quality over quantity this season as Concordia had less than half the number of potential male athletes as St. Thomas, which had an enrollment of 700+ male students. Concordia Lutheran High School s total enrollment for this year was 580 co- ed students. TAPPS A Boy s Track State s Several high school athletic departments have a few programs that perform historically better than the other programs. It is a notable accomplishment to build an athletic department where almost every program has the potential of making a
run to the state playoffs and thus earning points for the Henderson Cup. Concordia Crusaders teams earned points in the following different activities: Athletic Program Volleyball Track & Field (Boys) Baseball Basketball (Boys) Swimming (Boys) Basketball (Girls) Football Golf (Boys) Cross Country (Girls) Soccer (Girls) Softball Swimming (Girls) Track & Field (Girls) State Finish Semi-Finalist Semi-Finalist Regional Round Regional Round 4th 5th Area Round Area Round th th 11 10 7 7 5 4 4 1 1 One strength Concordia possesses is the development of the entire student- athlete; 70% of students at Concordia are involved in at least one athletic program with many student- athletes involved in multiple sports. Also, these athletes have the opportunity to be involved in a Fine Art program as well, which enables the school to compete well in multiple areas. Several students who represented the Academic team were also involved in an athletic program. While a challenging, college- preparatory education remains Concordia s primary interest, extracurricular success can further enhance the school s appeal in the NW Houston area. Students who attended Concordia this past year came from as far away as Katy and Willis and everywhere in between. The strength of Concordia Lutheran High School is the people involved in the ministry, which include our faculty, staff, coaches, administration, board of directors and of course our students! The Henderson Cup is a reflection of the hard word and dedication of our talented student population who represented our school well all year long across the state.
