In addition to the Fr. Mike Mireau Day Retreat for ECSD grade eight students and the District Faith Development Day a group of students and their teacher chaperones are preparing for a trip to Québec to experience the world famous Carnaval. Preparations are also underway for our Open House on February 12th. It is very evident that St. Rose remains a school of choice for many, as we often receive inquiries about our school from outside of our area on a regular basis. The best advertising we can get is word-of-mouth. We appreciate you sharing with your family, friends and neighbours why St. Rose is a great school. Finally, February is the month in which one day is set aside for families. The Catholic Church places the highest value on families because healthy and happy families are the essential building blocks for a strong and vibrant society. May God bless all our families. 2 Administration Information The school administration has been quite busy conducting two Alberta Education surveys. The Accountability Pillar was given to students during the third week of January. The OurSCHOOL Survey was given during the last week of the month. Both surveys give the school and district valuable information to address student needs. Additionally the results of the student Accountability Pillar along with the results from parents and teachers form the basis of the school s and district s Accountability Pillar Report Card which is usually available in May. This document tracks school improvement and stakeholder satisfaction. During the Christmas Break, a new addition to the gym was installed. The metal cross serves as a symbol of our faith whenever the gym is used especially when the gym is transformed into a sacred space during our religious celebrations. The school would like to thank the supportive Parent Council for funding this impressive artwork; it is a welcome addition to the school s increasing religious artifacts collection. The school s sacramental preparation program continues. Confirmation Preparation classes have begun. The classes are instructed by Sophie Ogle, Pastoral Associate, at St. John the Evangelist Parish. There are 16 student preparing for Confirmation. We are very excited as we are about to begin our second stairwell mosaic. The planning will be taking place in February. Parent volunteers are needed (see page five) for the installation. Lastly, this is an important time of the year for grade nine students and their families. Please inform yourselves of high school open houses and registration criteria and dates. There is important information on page six. Chaplain s Corner On January 24, 2019 10 grade 9 students volunteered their time at the Edmonton Foodbank. The students had the opportunity to learn about the Edmonton Foodbank and how they serve the needs of the community as well as spend time sorting donations. The next opportunity for students to volunteer their time at the Edmonton Foodbank will be on Thursday April 4. Our grade 8 students will be attending the Father Michael Mireau Faith Day on February 4, 2019. This event has become an annual event for our Grade 8 students in honor of Father Michael Mireau. St. Rose students will spend the day with other grade 8 students from Edmonton Catholic Schools and surrounding school districts. This is a great day to come together and celebrate our faith. On February 5, 2019, all Edmonton Catholic Schools staff will be attending a Faith Development Day where they will celebrate mass together and listen to Steve Angrisano, as he is the speaker for the school year. The liturgical season of Lent will begin next month. In preparation for Lent we will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday with a pancake breakfast for all students on Tuesday, March 5. We will then gather on the following day, March 6, to receive our ashes for Ash Wednesday. Many blessings to the students and families for the second half of the school year.

3 Bus Passes ETS bus passes for 2018-19 are $54.00 each which is subsidized by the school district. Bus passes will be available to students at the end of the previous month. If you are purchasing monthly bus passes, please note the following payment deadlines below. Note: Replacement ETS bus passes are $75.00 (full value). February 7 March 7 April 5 May 8 June 6 Parent Council The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 2, at 6:00 p.m. in the library. The minutes from the November meeting were approved at the January meeting and are posted to the school website. The Parent Council is having a Bottle Drive on Monday, February 4th. If you are able to drop off empties that day, your support would be appreciated. Gr. 8 Fr. Mike Mireau Day Feb. 4 The grade eight students will be going to the Edmonton Conference Centre on Monday, February 4 for the third annual Fr. Mike Mireau Day. 5 Awards As is the case with all Edmonton Catholic junior high schools, St. Rose Schools follows a cumulative marking format. Among the many advantages include: the student s most current and best work is represented on the report card, students take more ownership for assessments and are more reflective on how their work habits impact their report card marks, work is reflected in the summative mark best work represents growth over the year. As a result, grade completion with Honours or Honours With Distinction will be determined by the final report card only. The qualifications are: Honours indicates that a student has achieved an 80% average in the four core subjects of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Additionally all marks (core and complementary) must be over 70%. Honours with Distinction standing indicates that a student has achieved a 90% average in the four core subjects of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Additionally all marks (core and complementary) must be over 70%. In order to receive these awards, at year end, students must achieve the above standards on cumulative grade average by the end of the year (third term marks). Please note that Term 1 (September January) complementary (options) courses in grade eight and nine also count towards Honours and Honours with Distinction. Mosaic Artist in Residence St. Rose students and teachers are excited to start the second phase of the mosaic project. During the 2017/2018 school year we were fortunate to have Theo Harasymiw a local artist join the St. Rose school community to create the mosaics in the west stairwell. She will be with us again this year to work on the east stairwell. We are looking for two volunteers in the morning and two in the afternoon for each of the following days: February 25, 26, 27 and March 4, 5, 6, 7 (a.m. only), 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20. Morning time is 9:15-11:50 am Afternoon time is 12:30-3:00 pm No artistic background is necessary. If you are able to help, please call Mrs. Just at 780-483-2695. *Please note that volunteers will need to complete a Volunteer Registration Form prior to being able to assist in this project.
