Important Dates to Remember Sue Ms. Susan Buhain Study of IB alumni explores the lasting impact of IB programmes Katie Wright at the University of Melbourne conducted 23 in-depth interviews with IB graduates between the ages of 20 and 63, from 14 countries. The interviews explored the ways in which IB programmes may have influenced their professional pathways, attitudes toward learning as well as personal beliefs and overall view of the world. It gave me a perspective that I would never have had otherwise, I would not be the person that I am today there s nothing that was more important and more influencing on me than that two year period. Jessie completed two Diploma Programme (DP) courses in her public high school in Canada more than twenty years ago. Her quote illustrates one of the many perspectives of IB alumni from this study. IB alumni suggested that one of the key impacts of the programmes was how they helped them to develop dispositions and skills that have served them well both in further education and in life beyond. Among them, IB graduates cited the development of international-mindedness, love of learning, analytical and writing skills, and notably, critical thinking skills. News & Events Toddlers Class Car Wash and Airplane Museum Field Trip The learning engagements in and out of the classroom allowed the Toddlers Class learned more about how cars and planes help people get to places faster in their unit on Transportation. The little tots explored cars first hand by holding a fun-filled car wash activity one sunny day at the DIS parking lot. Nobody minded getting wet because of all the fun they had. They also went on a field trip to Philippine Air Force Museum where they saw different kinds of airplanes. They had a chance to pretend being pilots by riding some of the airplanes. Apart from knowing more about different kinds of transportation, these experiences helped the students develop their thinking, communication and self-management skills. Autism Awareness Empathic Student Council Autism Awareness is a campaign close to the heart of the Student Council, which led the student body through a week of productive immersion through the subject of autism. Initiated by Wim Schoonhoven, the Student Council President, the rest of the student leaders followed suit as they worked hand in hand in turning this project into a successful activity. From the get go, the council had their eyes set on providing students with a window into the eyes, ears and heart of children with special needs, specifically children with autism. In order to make this happen, the team sat with a few people to help brainstorm this very delicate topic. The team consulted with the School Directress to find out how this project will impact the community in a positive way. They researched on ways and means to creatively expand awareness about autism in the school. They visited a café known to do just that. A selected contingent dined in Puzzle Café along Katipunan Extension road and interviewed its owner. From here, the team was able to gather ideas to start an exciting project. In school, the Student Council, guided by Teacher Emilia Umaming, reconvened to map out their plans. After a couple of consultation and feedback, the team was set. Their first act was to organize a talk led by Mr. and Mrs. Schoonhoven, who spoke to the students and shared their own personal experience with autism. Following the talk was a panel board filled with information about autism.

Health Facts Heat Related Illnesses Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, occur when your body can t keep itself sufficiently cool. As the air temperature rises, your body stays cool when your sweat evaporates. On hot, humid days, the evaporation of sweat is slowed by the increased moisture in the air. When sweating isn t adequate to moderate your body temperature, your body temperature rises, and you may become ill. Get medical help right away if you have these warning signs: - Skin that feels hot and dry, but not sweaty - Confusion or loss of consciousness - Frequent vomiting - Shortness of breath or trouble breathing How can I prevent Heat Illnesses? When the heat index is high, stay indoors in air-conditioned areas when possible. If you must go outside, take the following precautions: - Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing - Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella - Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more - Drink plenty of water before starting an outdoor activity. Drink extra water all day. Keep in mind that heat-related illnesses are not only caused by high temperatures and fluid loss, but also a lack of salt in the body. Some sports drinks can help replenish the salt in your body lost through sweating. - Drink fewer beverages that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee and soda) or alcohol. - Schedule vigorous outdoor activities for cooler times of the day (before 10:00am and after 6:00pm) - During an outdoor activity, take frequent breaks. Drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don t feel thirsty. If you have clear, pale urine, you are probably drinking enough fluids. Dark-colored urine is an indication that you re dehydrated. Photo courtesy of: https://www.osha.gov
