You will be joining a community dating back to 191 with a rich history and traditions. This August, you will become part of our shared legacy. As Principal, I believe one of the keys to being successful in high school is finding a connection through your academic, athletic, or artistic interests. Las Lomas Counseling Office Dear Parents of the Class of 2022: We would like to take this opportunity to extend to you and your student a warm welcome to Las Lomas High School. The following is our schedule for registering students who will be entering Las Lomas as freshman in the fall of 2018. (Please note: proof of residency must be provided for every student entering Las Lomas. This process will begin in August.) Tues-Wed, January 23-2: Counselors visit classes at Tice Creek (1/23) and WCI (1/2) and distribute registration folders and course information. The folder will include: (1) Forms to be filled out and returned to Tice Creek or WCI English classes. (2) Information related to course selection. (3) Instructions for completing the online course request system. Your student should bring this packet home for you to review and take to the evening orientation. Tuesday, January 23 Tuesday, February 6: Online course request window. After discussing class selections with your student, you must enter those choices and alternate selections online. Instructions are included in the registration folder. Thursday, February 1: Online information link for new students launches on Las Lomas webpage www.acalanes.k12.ca.us/laslomas. Look for the New Student Info button. This link should help you, as an incoming Las Lomas parent, feel like you are already part of our community! Thursday, February 1, 6:00pm: Eighth grade parent only orientation meeting at Las Lomas gym. Very important meeting reviewing and addressing questions regarding 9 th grade course requirements and elective courses. Please bring with you the registration folder your student brought home. You should leave this meeting with a rough draft of course selections. Thursday, February 1, 6:30pm: Las Lomas Open House. Eighth graders and parents are encouraged to attend. Classroom demonstrations, art exhibits, musical entertainment are only a few of the exciting things planned for that evening. Tuesday, February 6: Registration forms are due in English classes at WCI and Tice Creek. Monday, April 9 - Friday, May 18: Individual counselor appointments with student and parents to discuss 9 th grade classes, transition to high school and the beginnings of a four year plan. The appointment time and date will be on a sticker on the cover of the folder your student received. ** August 2018: Address verification and Knights Day. Monday, August 20: First day of school **Although we are attempting to match student and counselor for our individual appointments, actual assignment of counselors will occur at Knights Day. LAS LOMAS HIGH SCHOOL Peer Tutoring Program Get Help From Fellow Students In: Foreign Language Math Science English Social Studies Students wanting aid in any subject can drop in the College/Career Center and obtain a list of contacts for volunteer student peer tutors. Las Lomas High School Athletic Physical Education Application Athletic physical education was implemented to help both freshman athletes and teachers of 6 th or 7 th period classes cope with athletic contests that require a departure time before 3:0 pm. The members of the Las Lomas Physical Education Department are willing to put in the extra time it takes to make this work. To complete the registration process, all students must go through Knights Day annually in August before they can attend school. Information will be mailed home in July.. What is The Student Daily Bulletin? The Daily Bulletin is a bulletin read to the student body during 2 nd period. It will let students know what is going on at school, sporting events, tests dates, etc. 6. When is the library open? The library is open at 7:30 every morning and closes at : every weekday afternoon. 7. When is the computer lab open? The computer lab, which is located in room 203, is opened at 7:30 every morning and closes at :00 every afternoon. The computer lab supervisor is Michael McEwen. 8. Who is my student s Guidance Counselor? Students will be assigned a counselor by their last name. (92) 280-3923 or 280-3920 Ext. 2111 is used to clear absences, tardies, and request permits to leave campus. 11. Who is my student s Associate Principal? Students will be assigned to an Associate Principal by their last name. For the 2017-18 school year, the alpha groups are as follows: Janet Terranova (A-D), Amy Geotino (E-M) and Dave Granzatto (N-Z). These alpha groups are subject to change and will not be finalized for the 2018-19 school year until after the start of school. 12. What sports teams are at Las Lomas and when are their seasons? Fall Football, Boys/Girls: Cross Country and Water Polo, Girls: Golf, Tennis, and Volleyball; Fall season sports start before school starts. Winter Wrestling, Basketball and Soccer Boys/Girls: Spring Baseball, Softball, Boys/Girls: Lacrosse, Swimming/Diving and Track, Boys: Golf, Tennis, Volleyball and Team Sport Cheer For athletic clearance/physical information consult the Athletics page of the Las Lomas web site. You will need a physical signed after July 1 st to participate each school year. Academic eligibility for Fall sports (2.0 or higher) will be based on final semester of 8 th grade for the start of your freshman year. Go to the Athletics page of the Las Lomas web site for further information and forms needed for physicals. 13. How many clubs are there at Las Lomas? There are many clubs, which change from year to year. For a current list look at the Clubs tab under Students on the Las Lomas web site. 1 Can you choose your student s teachers? No, the schedule determines who your student s teachers will be. 1. If your student is struggling who do you go to for help? First contact the teacher, second the counselor, and third the appropriate Associate Principal. The best way to contact any staff member is by email (1 st initial, full last name @acalanes.k12.ca.us for example to contact the principal, Tiffany Benson, you would email tbenson@auhsdschools.org. 16. Is attendance and being to class on time important? Yes, because after a number of tardies, your child will be referred to detention or Saturday School. After 3 cuts your child will be referred to SARB (Student Attendance Review Board). 17. What do all visitors need to do when they come on to campus? Any visitor, which is defined as someone who is not a student or campus personnel, is required to sign in at the Attendance Office before entering the campus. Las Lomas is a closed campus during school hours and visitors must have prearranged appointments. Please respect this rule for the safety of our students and staff.

18. Where are the Main Office, Attendance Office and Counseling Office? Both the Attendance and Counseling Offices are located down the first hallway off visitors parking. The Nurse s Office is also located in the Attendance Office. The Main Office is accessed through the Attendance Office 19. Who is the superintendent of the Acalanes Union High School District? 8 th Grade Parent Information Night: Frequently Asked Questions How does a student make an appointment with his/her counselor? Students fill out an appointment request form (available in the Counseling Office) and turn in the completed form to their counselor s box. Counselors make every attempt to respond to a student s request for an appointment within three days. Please keep in mind that counselors must prioritize emergencies and urgent matters. How do parents make an appointment with their student s counselor? Please call or e-mail your student s counselor to schedule an appointment. Counselors cannot accommodate drop-in appointments. What if I want to change a class? The add/drop period takes place the first ten days of the school year. Students who would like to add and/or drop a class will need to fill out a course change request form (available in the Counseling Office). Forms are reviewed and changes will be made if teacher contract loads and classroom space allows. Can students request a teacher change? Given scheduling constraints, we cannot honor teacher change requests. Will classes change after the first semester? No, all freshman classes are year-long, which does not allow for semester changes. How much homework will my student have? Your student should plan to have at least 30 minutes of homework each night for each academic class s/he is enrolled in. What is considered a full academic load? Six credit classes are considered to be a full academic load. Freshmen are required to take at least six classes, and have the option to request seven. What grades are reported on transcripts? Semester 1 and semester 2 grades are the official grades that are reported on transcripts. Progress report and quarter grades are not reported on transcripts. Do freshman grades count? Yes! Freshman grades count to meet graduation requirements and also college eligibility requirements. Some schools (most UCs and CSUs) use the GPA from grades 10-12 for admission purposes, but individual freshman grades are still considered to prove proficiency. What if my student has a question about his/her grades? Students are encouraged to speak directly to their teacher/s. School Loop is also a tool to monitor grades. How do I contact a teacher? Teachers can be reached via e-mail or phone (voice message). Please allow up to 8 hours for a response. Can freshmen take Advanced Placement (AP) classes? No, AP classes are not offered at the freshman level. Is there a community service requirement for graduation? Las Lomas does not have a community service requirement for graduation; however, some teachers may have community service assignments that are counted towards a student s overall grade.
