Michelle Klem University Of Missouri Extension 4-H Youth Development Specialist From: Mary Oden, YPA University of Missouri Extension Putnam County Courthouse, Room 104 Unionville MO 63565 660-947-2705 E-Mail Mary at odenm@missouri.edu Some of The Topics You Will Find Inside Scholarships MO State Fair Ownership Dates Photo Corp 2010 4-H Council Meeting Birthdays Clover Kids Corner January 2010 PROJECT LEADERS You are a Very Important Person to the young people in your 4-H Project Please begin early, have regu-larly scheduled project meetings using the Experiential Learning Model. What you say? Simply hands-on learning!. The 4-H slogan learning by doing is a great foundation for your project meetings. The greatest degree of learning occurs in the actual ex-perience. The closer to real life a learning activity or experience is, the more effective it will be. Sometimes, though, it isn't practical to learn from the actual experience. In that case, you want your members to have as mean-ingful an experience as possible; There are a variety of methods that can be used to teach your members. This variety will help keep the members inter-ested and enthused about project meetings and the content they are learn-ing. Each method will also have an effect on how well they learn, because we all learn differently. However, the level of involvement is important in how much is learned. Activities that are more like real life experiences and that involve members in listening, seeing and doing usually bring about the most learning. When possible, use hands on experiences, simulations, games, demonstrations or models. Try to avoid telling or asking members to read or listen in lecture style format as primary teaching models. Also don t forget about using other hands on teaching techniques like skill-a -thons and judging, these are very valuable as well. For more information and examples of skill-a-thons please visit the Missouri 4-H web-site http://4h.missouri.edu and click on the project page. If you do not have computer access call your local extension office at 665-9866 and we can mail you copies. Remember, teaching skills and connecting with youth can happen in many ways, shapes, and forms. We value your commitment, dedication and motivation to work with the youth in the Missouri 4-H program. With your help we are providing many skills and improving the lives of our future leaders. For additional information refer to MU Extension publication LG783, Learning by Doing, for a description of this effective model of teaching. Teaching styles are as different as the students they serve. Be crea-tive and have fun. The time you spend with the members in your project is priceless. The members will remember these experiences for a lifetime. Thank you for being a caring adult in their life and helping build skills that will help them in the future! Dear 4-H Families You may or may not have heard on December 12 my husband, Jack, was involved in a tractor accident, the tractor ran over his leg and it is broken in 2 places. He is doing fine but is unable to put any weight on his leg, so therefore I will be working from home a lot in the next few weeks, so I can be home to care for him. I will only be at the office for short periods of time. If you need to contact me you may call Annette at the Putnam County Extension Office 660-947- 2705 or Michelle Klem at the Adair County Extension Office 660-665-9866 and they can tell you my schedule. You may also email me at odenm@missouri.edu as I will be checking it daily from home. Thank You Mary Oden Putnam County 4-H Council Meeting February 1, 5:15 pm Old Soldiers Room Putnam County Courthouse The Missouri State Fair provides two college scholarship opportunities for 4-H youth: State Fair Foundation Scholarships are offered through the 4-H Foundation scholarship program.
